Moonage Daydream

an exercise in hand size management

This Moon Kami daydreams of big draws and big attacks, all while trying to hold a controlling grip on the game (in typical blue fashion). Moonage Daydream is a draw / hand size matters deck geared for combat damage wincons. It features a heap of budget draw enigines, efficient draw spells, a lot of small blockers and pillowforts for the mid game, and an army of (possibly huge) hand size driven creatures for the end game. Additionally, there are a pretty straight forward set of control spells and ramp spells, as well as cards with the essential line "You have no maximum hand size".

Playing this deck is really a two parter, because playing blue control is not easy in the early game. You will probably have to play and give up quite a few mid game pieces to stay in the game. But once you have a decent draw engine going and you have some mana on the board, you can pretty much have a say in everything that happens around the table. I usually save my control spells for this part of the game, as I dont want to show strength before I have it. Ramping is also pretty much a must, since this deck is quite mana intensive. Keeping mana open for counterspells during the mid- and endgame will make it seem like you are not getting the same out of your lands as your opponents. The typical way to counteract this is by playing instant draw spells right before your turn starts again.

These are the stages of the game:

  1. Ramp stage - you should probably also play the commander in this stage;
  2. Mid game defense stage - get some blockers or some pillow fort pieces on the table;
  3. Draw engine stage - get some draw engine cards on the table, balance the level of greed;
  4. Beater stage - play the big dudes;
  5. Endgame stage - either bounce the board and try to hit for lethal, or save your mana and wait. Remember to keep counterspell mana open!

Tricks include:

The budet is ~100$ total, max 5$ per card (with exceptions). I use Cardkingdom prices

Suggestions are welcome :)

Found this nice draw engine-ish card. Gonna swap out Jace Mirror Mage since he doesnt really draw alot..

OUT: Jace, Mirror Mage

IN: Loyal Drake

Changing some categories and swapping out some expensive cards for budget versions.

New category is "mid game survival", and it includes all the cards I play to try and survive the mid game, excluding the pillowfort pieces which have their own category.

The following four cards have become quite expensive, and budget replacements have been found.

OUT: Howling Mine, Mystic Remora, Crawlspace, and Mikokoro, Center of the Sea

IN: Jace, Mirror Mage, Dissipation Field, Kasmina, Enigmatic Mentor, and Island
