Creature (1)

When I pulled Sovereign Okinec Ahau from a pack (plus his friend Kutzil, Malamet Exemplar in the next one), I thought he'd be a fun and easy build-around for a commander deck. Mix in some anthems, a few +1/+1 counter enablers and then just turn things sideways, right? Well, yeah, for the most part. But I found a few extra little tricks to complicate the strategies.

First, Okinec. His ability requires him to attack, and as a relatively vanilla 3/4, we gotta find him some ways to keep him alive. To that effect, we have Rogue's Passage, Trailblazer's Boots, Whispersilk Cloak, a few instants that can give indestructible, plus the very versatile Maze of Ith that can pull Okinec out of the fire or hold a scary opposing creature at bay.

Once Okinec can do his thing safely, we need some cards that can increase our creatures' base power. Glorious Anthem, Leinore, Autumn Sovereign, Gavony Township, Spear of Heliod and many others can all boost our boys for commander's attack trigger.

But now let's have a little fun. We can put the counters given from Okinec and others to work. Envoy of the Ancestors gives our plussed-up creatures lifelink, Duskshell Crawler gives them trample and Hamza, Guardian of Arashin makes them cheaper to cast. We can also ramp with Fertilid, draw cards with Mindless Automaton and ping our opponents with the poor man's Walking Ballista, Triskelion.

Having fun is great, but we also need some serious damage dealers who can end the game. We've got a few powerful creatures that are perfect friends for Okinec. X spells like Ochre Jelly and Goldvein Hydra all have base powers of zero, and come equipped with both their own +1/+1 counters and trample to boot. Steel Hellkite, Botanical Brawler and Mikaeus, the Lunarch all have similar upsides. And Railway Brawler can boost them all as soon as they hit the board. And while we're not running Craterhoof, we have both Overwhelming Stampede and Kamahl, Heart of Krosa for similar game-ending effects.

And then there are the turbo boosts. Cathars' Crusade is a great card, on its own, but paired with Basking Broodscale, it can net you infinitely large creatures and infinite colorless mana (though we purposefully do not have a Walking Ballista in the deck because I'd prefer to win through combat damage.) Vigor makes combat damage a breeze, forcing opponents to choose between taking big damage or boosting our creatures even further for a bigger attack next turn. But the real MVP is invariably Champion of Lambholt. Because Okinec's ability triggers on attack, the Champion can grow before blocks, which can then pump its power high enough to make our whole team unblockable. I'm shocked this card isn't more expensive, both in terms of mana and dollars.

Outside of our main strategy, we've got some of the typical removal and protection spells. Semester's End is a fun way to avoid a board wipe in this deck, and while it's never ideal to wipe away all your +1/+1 counters, Together Forever does function as a cheap way to keep them out of the graveyard and put them back in our hand.

In any case, make sure to pack some dice when you play this deck. You're going to need them.
