Curse of the Restless Dead

Enchantment — Aura Curse

Enchant player

Whenever a land enters the battlefield under enchanted player's control, you create a 2/2 black Zombie creature token with decayed. (It can't block. When it attacks, sacrifice it at the end of combat.)

Chaddish it hasn't been optimised as my partner hasn't figured out what she likes/dislikes about it yet, and as it's her first EDH deck it's not going to be super competitive yet. As well as that, it's more of a social deck too.

That being said, there are a couple of wincons. The less obivous and more difficult is draining your opponents out,Cauldron Familiar doesn't target so you can start the incremental damage there. If you're smart with the curses, Trespasser's Curse, Curse of Fool's Wisdom and a flipped Accursed Witch  Flip can start to add up. Torment of Scarabs and Cruel Reality can help here too but are reliant on them not wanting to lose resources, but that can still be helpful. Leechridden Swamp can add to this total too.

The clearest would be creature beatdown, 3/3 Demons from Tasha, the Witch Queen. It relies on opponents dealing damage to other opponents usually, but our playgroup is quite creature centric anyway. The curses can help here too; Curse of the Restless Dead, and Curse of Disturbance give you (and opponents) extra Zombies to push through some damage.

The most fun but least consistent way of winning is the wincons not in your deck - taking them via Tasha or other stealing means. A particular favourite of mine was Coffin Queen resurrecting a Gray Merchant of Asphodel for a double kill.

That being said, this deck is still in the early stages and will change over time - mostly as my partner figures out the way she wants to play the deck. At the moment it's a casual flavourful start, but I'll keep updating it as it gets more competitive too.

I never got around to buying the cards needed for this deck. I was worried it was not good enough and put this project on the back burner in case I changed my mind. Now today, after reviewing the deck, I decided that I did not have enough interaction and that some cards still feel a bit too expensive or slow. These changes should hopefully help rectify those issues.

Previous changes: -1. Aetherspouts - replaced with Noxious Ghoul. I determined that Noxious Ghoul did not have enough impact for its mana cost. Instead I shall be using Counterspell. -2. Eater of Hope - replaced with Corpse Harvester. I determined that Corpse Harvester was too expensive and too slow to make an impact, seeing as it needs to survive an entire turn in order to be used. I really liked it, but my deck needs more interaction. Instead I shall be using Arcane Denial.

Additional precon card swaps: 1. Gravespawn Sovereign - replaced with Negate. 2. Ravenous Rotbelly - replaced with Dispel. 3. Army of the Damned - replaced with Unwind This spell really hurt me to remove as I love it very much. Just too expensive and slow. 4. Dread Summons - replaced with Reality Shift. 5. Curse of the Restless Dead - replaced with Thought Vessel. 6. Swamp - replaced with Reliquary Tower (already owned one, figured, why not?)

Hey, well done so far upgrading the precon, nice Phyrexian Altar.

Some cards from the precon to consider adding:

Talisman of Dominance ETB untapped to make either color. Another mana rock upgrade is Dimir Signet replacing Charcoal Diamond. Dreadhorde Invasion is a repeatable source of Zombie and Eternal Skylord is a much worse Hordewing Skaab. Curse of the Restless Dead is a more reliable repeatable source of Zombies than Undead Alchemist.

Pact of the Serpent is powerful tribal card for Zombies. Battle at the Bridge needs lots more artifacts to be playable. Zombie Apocalypse is powerful tribal card for Zombies especially when your Commander sacs Zombies to draw. Patriarch's Bidding is another mass reanimation tribal Zombie card. Dread Summons needs a ton of mana paid into it to be decent since you have no control over milling your own or opponent creatures.

Gisa and Geralf can be repeatable cast of Zombies from your graveyard which can do more than Ebondeath, Dracolich. Feed the Swarm is helpful to have enchantment removal in Dimir. Liliana, Death's Majesty can be repeatable Zombies and her other abilities are good too. She does more than Liliana's Mastery, but honestly you don't need either one of these cards since there's better five drops here or could add.

The more basic Islands you can replace with Dimir dual lands the better the manabase will be because black mana is much important than blue. Lots of basic Islands makes it more difficult to cast heavy black spells. Tainted Isle and Choked Estuary are playable lands in the precon that care about Swamps and you have a lot of Swamps.

Good luck with your deck.

That's kind of an interesting pick for a swap martinant365. I think Marchesa, the Black Rose is cool and am considering her as a potential deck transition for Anhelo, but I don't think she fits all that well in the 99 for Anhelo.

Marchesa wants to play more aggressively, and swing with creatures each combat. Anhelo tends to lean more spellslinger, and utilizes a smaller creature base and token producers to create fodder for Casualty 2.

I noticed your deck is missing some token creators that can be really helpful for an Anhelo deck. Some helpful ones are:

I would also generally recommend swapping some of your sorcery speed removal and interaction for more instant speed stuff. Instant speed removal combined with consistent token generation can help you remove multiple permanents per removal spell, which is really what Anhelo's specialty is.

That makes sense. If your looking for cards to cut I would suggest Endless Ranks of the Dead I know it’s really fun but I’ve always found it to be super slow. The other card that stands out is Curse of the Restless Dead. It was slow for me as well. In my experience having ways to boost your zombies power is the most effective way to win. To that end a cheap option is Bad Moon.

There are some curse enchantments that can help spew out tokens: Curse of Disturbance, Curse of Shallow Graves, and Curse of the Restless Dead. Each one depends on something specific, either attacking the cursed player or the cursed player dropping lands, but it’s easy enough to get it going.

Hey, well done with the precon upgrade and very nice formated deck description. You're a good deck builder with the budget that you have, choosing the better expensive price cards (Demonic, Gravecrawler, Acererak, Cryptbreaker and Watery). If on a budget I don't think Tainted Adversary and Ebondeath, Dracolich are worth their prices.

You're very honest about the power level here, not exaggerating and saying power level 8 to make your deck seem better than it really is. Believe me, I hear this all the time, players insisting that the power level of their deck is very high while playing $100 deck with only 30 lands and Guildgates...

In the combo section of the description you don't mention Gravecrawler and it's a pretty important Zombie for combos especially with Rooftop. He needs a sac outlet with Rooftop to go infinite which all you need is Carrion Feeder. Gravecrawler is the most powerful Zombie printed because its just so damn mana efficient. He deserves his own section in the description since his interaction with Wilhert is excellent, giving you a Zombie on your turn to repeatedly sac at your end steps to draw and create a decayed Zombie for one mana.

You clearly have deck building skills, but there's some cards here that could be upgraded even on a budget. You've removed some of the better cards from the precon that can give you repeatable value especially more draw and Zombie tokens.

  • Undead Augur: very good Zombie since it triggers to draw whenever a Zombie token dies.
  • Midnight Reaper: another source or repeatable draw when nontokens die.

  • Gisa and Geralf: don't underestimate how valuable it is to be able repeatedly cast even one Zombie on your turn from your graveyard. Pair Augur with Gisa/Geralf and Wilhelt to repeatedly draw two cards/create a decayed Zombie on your turns for two mana. Pair Gisa/Geralf with Fleshbag Marauder and Wilhelt to repeatedly wreck your opponents creatures for three mana and create a decayed Zombie.

  • Fleshbag Marauder: making all opponents have to sac a creature they control is really good in multiplayer Commander especially on a three drop Zombie who can be recurred or reanimated.

  • Curse of the Restless Dead: you can curse yourself to have more control over this making it a repeatable Zombie source by playing lands. Honestly, this card is better than Endless Ranks of the Dead at consistency of creating Zombies since there's no lame restriction like Ranks has and you'll have lands.

  • Liliana, Death's Majesty: all her loyalty abilities are good especially her -7 which is not difficult to get to and in casual it can wreck, be a game winning effect.

Some changes to consider:

Poppet Stitcher  Flip is a powerful new card for Zombies and Poppet Factory is busted with Wilhert because it removes decayed from Zombies letting you repeatedly sac a decayed Zombie to create another. Fallen Ideal is an underrated gem in Commander with token strategies because it gives the enchanted creature flying and it's a sac outlet.

Enchant Wilhert and then sac your Zombie horde to attack for lethal Commander damage at an opponent. If you created a bunch of decayed Zombies potentially attack again for lethal Commander damage to another opponent on your next turn. Pair Ideal with Factory to attack for lethal Commander damage on your turn every turn.

Good luck with your deck.

Hey, you always ask me what my take is on a Commander, but not your own thoughts. What are your thoughts on Wilhelt, the Rotcleaver? How about you build a deck with him and show it to me?

I'm excited about Wilhelt, the Rotcleaver, already added him as well as Crowded Crypt to my Varina deck. Also added Champion of the Perished, Shipwreck Marsh, Deserted Beach from Midnight Hunt. On the fence about adding Curse of the Restless Dead, Ravenous Rotbelly and Ghoul's Night Out from the precon and a few other budget cards from Midnight Hunt such as Infernal Grasp and Siege Zombie.

If Tainted Adversary keeps dropping in price then he has potential. I don't except The Meathook Massacre to drop in price at all, but if it does it also has potential. Empty the Laboratory in the precon seems powerful and Vanquish the Horde from Hunt, but I'm avoiding all and cards because of the budget manabase. All of the new Zombies in the precon are fine cards, but other than Wilhelt the rest are not better four/five drops then already current Zombies and other four/five drops.

I like Varina better as Zombie Commander than Wilhelt.
