Curse of the Restless Dead

Enchantment — Aura Curse

Enchant player

Whenever a land enters the battlefield under enchanted player's control, you create a 2/2 black Zombie creature token with decayed. (It can't block. When it attacks, sacrifice it at the end of combat.)

I saw your forum post, and figured I'd leave my suggestions here:

  • Scapegoat - Can help with board protection for stuff you wouldn't want to die (mostly Carmen).

  • Bartolome del Presidio - Kind of like another Carrion Feeder. Helpful to have another free sac outlet that can also grow into a threat.

  • Plumb the Forbidden - Maybe can replace Village Rites or Corrupted Conviction. Excellent draw, especially when used in response to board wipes. One of my favorite uses was using it in response to a Living Death lol.

  • Fanatical Devotion - Another free sac outlet that can help you protect key creatures.

  • Curse of the Restless Dead - Could be another means of getting creature tokens to sac, even if you enchant yourself with it. I think this or Fanatical Devotion could replace Monologue Tax, which felt very underwhelming each time I played it.

  • Loran of the Third Path - Another helpful ETB removal with some upside for political draw.

  • Chittering Witch - ETB token creator with a bit of removal

  • Bronzebeak Foragers - More ETB removal that can be repeated with Carmen. Kind of like a Grasp of Fate on a stick.

  • Luminous Broodmoth - Helps recur your sacrificed creatures and turns them into more effective attackers/blockers, assuming they didn't already have flying.

  • Vito, Fanatic of Aclazotz - A value engine that cares about you sacrificing permanents.

  • Lich-Knights' Conquest - Could be a means of doing a "surgical" version of Living Death, and get back some of your ETB removal like Fleshbag Marauder and crew.

I think you have a solid start so far in terms of trying to balance out sac fodder creation and sac enablers. Every meta is different, but I think with how prevalent Treasures and similar types of tokens are now, Carmen should get some incidental growth from other players, but will definitely require some testing in your local metas to determine that. I think having a decent amount of Free Sac Outlets to let you control your own sacrificing at instant speed should be helpful too, especially if some of those effects can help you protect Carmen, or at least replenish resources if she is removed.

Dreadhorde Invasion and Felidar Retreat could both be good sources for creature tokens to sacrifice to Thalia & Gitrog. Felidar Retreat is especially decent given T&GM's extra Landfall ability. If you would like another token creator, Scute Swarm is right at home with some extra land drops, and can swarm someone or be another source of tokens to sacrifice.

You could also enchant yourself with Curse of the Restless Dead and use it as another source of tokens off your extra land drops.

Digging the Bob Ross name reference. I agree with the feedback from NV_1980 about lowering the curve a bit. Still helps to play a bit smoother against your wife and kids haha.

I'd recommend checking out Jadar, Ghoulcaller of Nephalia, Dreadhorde Invasion, and Curse of the Restless Dead as some fairly budget-ish token producers for your Casualty 2 needs. I found them all to be pretty helpful when I was playing Anhelo, before I retired the deck.

The new Lord of the Rings set is also introducing a new variety of Amass cards for more token fodder, a lot of which are in Grixis colors.

I have removed the following cards:

Curse of the Restless Dead

Blade of Selves

Mystic Skull  Flip

Crawl from the Cellar

Altar of Dementia

Ghouls' Night Out

Pyre of Heroes

Liliana's Mastery

Added a few cheap zombie cards in as well as more land cards as advised by Lukas96. this has drastically improved the deck in performance thank you! I usually win by turn 12 or earlier (testing on Ai of course).

I will continue to improve the deck.

Thank you Poly_raptor! I'm still getting play-test reps in to get a feel for consistency and all that. Definitely feels strong to say the least. I've played aristocrats decks before, so am more familiar with those elements of the deck. This is my 2nd attempt at something Landfall related, after making a concept build for Thalia and The Gitrog Monster

In regards to the combos, I'm trying to find that sweet spot of them requiring about 3 cards to be streamlined enough to reliably pull off, but not super busted that my friends can't interact with them. I also want to make sure they're not super convoluted for me to remember and assemble haha.

In regards to Abundance, I think it could definitely have a place in a deck like this. I imagine most Zimone and Dina lists will be running additional draw engines that explicitly state "draw a card", so having 1 that doesn't state it won't really hurt. Also, I think her first ability trigger might be more of a focus for decks that will care more about life gain & life loss. Abundance def seems like it will be helpful for keeping Landfall triggers humming, and to dig for those 3 bounce lands for combo enabling.

Living Plane seems like it has a lot of fun potential, but is definitely out of my price range hahaha. I think Field of the Dead will likely be part of some future upgrades for my list as I continue to refine it. For now Curse of the Restless Dead is kinda like my budget alternative, since I can enchant myself with it lol.

Chaddish it hasn't been optimised as my partner hasn't figured out what she likes/dislikes about it yet, and as it's her first EDH deck it's not going to be super competitive yet. As well as that, it's more of a social deck too.

That being said, there are a couple of wincons. The less obivous and more difficult is draining your opponents out,Cauldron Familiar doesn't target so you can start the incremental damage there. If you're smart with the curses, Trespasser's Curse, Curse of Fool's Wisdom and a flipped Accursed Witch  Flip can start to add up. Torment of Scarabs and Cruel Reality can help here too but are reliant on them not wanting to lose resources, but that can still be helpful. Leechridden Swamp can add to this total too.

The clearest would be creature beatdown, 3/3 Demons from Tasha, the Witch Queen. It relies on opponents dealing damage to other opponents usually, but our playgroup is quite creature centric anyway. The curses can help here too; Curse of the Restless Dead, and Curse of Disturbance give you (and opponents) extra Zombies to push through some damage.

The most fun but least consistent way of winning is the wincons not in your deck - taking them via Tasha or other stealing means. A particular favourite of mine was Coffin Queen resurrecting a Gray Merchant of Asphodel for a double kill.

That being said, this deck is still in the early stages and will change over time - mostly as my partner figures out the way she wants to play the deck. At the moment it's a casual flavourful start, but I'll keep updating it as it gets more competitive too.

I never got around to buying the cards needed for this deck. I was worried it was not good enough and put this project on the back burner in case I changed my mind. Now today, after reviewing the deck, I decided that I did not have enough interaction and that some cards still feel a bit too expensive or slow. These changes should hopefully help rectify those issues.

Previous changes: -1. Aetherspouts - replaced with Noxious Ghoul. I determined that Noxious Ghoul did not have enough impact for its mana cost. Instead I shall be using Counterspell. -2. Eater of Hope - replaced with Corpse Harvester. I determined that Corpse Harvester was too expensive and too slow to make an impact, seeing as it needs to survive an entire turn in order to be used. I really liked it, but my deck needs more interaction. Instead I shall be using Arcane Denial.

Additional precon card swaps: 1. Gravespawn Sovereign - replaced with Negate. 2. Ravenous Rotbelly - replaced with Dispel. 3. Army of the Damned - replaced with Unwind This spell really hurt me to remove as I love it very much. Just too expensive and slow. 4. Dread Summons - replaced with Reality Shift. 5. Curse of the Restless Dead - replaced with Thought Vessel. 6. Swamp - replaced with Reliquary Tower (already owned one, figured, why not?)

Hey, well done so far upgrading the precon, nice Phyrexian Altar.

Some cards from the precon to consider adding:

Talisman of Dominance ETB untapped to make either color. Another mana rock upgrade is Dimir Signet replacing Charcoal Diamond. Dreadhorde Invasion is a repeatable source of Zombie and Eternal Skylord is a much worse Hordewing Skaab. Curse of the Restless Dead is a more reliable repeatable source of Zombies than Undead Alchemist.

Pact of the Serpent is powerful tribal card for Zombies. Battle at the Bridge needs lots more artifacts to be playable. Zombie Apocalypse is powerful tribal card for Zombies especially when your Commander sacs Zombies to draw. Patriarch's Bidding is another mass reanimation tribal Zombie card. Dread Summons needs a ton of mana paid into it to be decent since you have no control over milling your own or opponent creatures.

Gisa and Geralf can be repeatable cast of Zombies from your graveyard which can do more than Ebondeath, Dracolich. Feed the Swarm is helpful to have enchantment removal in Dimir. Liliana, Death's Majesty can be repeatable Zombies and her other abilities are good too. She does more than Liliana's Mastery, but honestly you don't need either one of these cards since there's better five drops here or could add.

The more basic Islands you can replace with Dimir dual lands the better the manabase will be because black mana is much important than blue. Lots of basic Islands makes it more difficult to cast heavy black spells. Tainted Isle and Choked Estuary are playable lands in the precon that care about Swamps and you have a lot of Swamps.

Good luck with your deck.
