More Updates

So while I still can't afford a full set of Fetchlands to really upgrade the deck, I have made some upgrades: Abrupt Decay was a card I managed to trade for with it's reprinting in MM3. It's a great card, a catch-all removal for many of the formats best permanents from Delver and Death's Shadow to Liliana of the Veil and Tarmogoyf. Steel Hellkite is being experimented with. His X ability is actually quite useful, especially against some more offbeat strategies or combo decks. Thunderbreak Regent was added as a response to Fatal Push. Fatal Push could turn Broodmate Dragon into an over costed 4/4 for 6CMC rather than 6 mana for 8 P/T over two bodies since it so easily dispatches the dragon token. Thunderbreak makes people pay for trying to remove my dragons, is 4 mana for 4 power flying (usually on turn 3 due to Sakura Tribe Elder) and the damage can really swing a race, and can even help against the rise of Death's Shadow, since hasty dragons like Stormbreath and Kolaghan can come down for large amounts of surprise damage from no where. Read the Bones is a card I've loved in Standard, and this deck can suffer from bad draws. RtB helps smooth it out and gives Dark-Dwellers a good target when you have control over the board. Painful Truths added to the Sideboard for grindy matches. Hornet Nest is a great sideboard option for Death's Shadow. The lack of Trample of the Shadow and Tarmogoyf make the little bees incredibly scarey for Death's Shadow players. I want to pick up Fetches and fetachable dual lands for more consistency, as well as one or two copies of Raging Ravine to put your mana to good use in the late game. Overall the deck remains competitive. It still performs very well against Dredge, Infect, Affinity, and has increased it's win percent against Burn since the additions of Feed the Clan and Obstinate Baloth. It does very well against other, more traditional, Jund decks and does very, very well against Abzan midrange. Control decks relying on White, such as Jeskai or U/W, for heavy removal it still does great against due to Stormbreath, and does well most of the time against decks using Fatal Push. Death's Shadow is an interesting beast to combat. I've found that Abzan Death's Shadow is easier to beat than the Jund version, for obvious reasons. Usually I find the Kolghan dash swing for burst is my best route to victory against them. I've been asked in shop about the 1-of Chandra. I like threat diversity, and having one non-creature win condition is something I like doing. She survives all the common board sweepers rising in popularity as control seems to be getting a better and better foothold (Wrath of God, Damnation, Supreme Verdict...) and gives me a way to sweep up small creatures if there are still ones running around. I would eventually like to replace her with Chandra, Torch of Defiance however, who gives me damage as well as mana which this deck can eat up. Amonkhet brings Glorybringer, which I'm almost certain will find a home as a 2-to-4-of in this deck. The ability to come down and swing for 8 by itself, backed by Stormbreath or Kolaghan, has a lot of potential for the surprise burst kill.

Amonkhet

Umbreomancer, 8 years ago

Time to begin changing for Amonkhet, I guess. Expect changes often as I tweak and balance old cards versus new.

Made some changes, for the better, I hope.

Made some substitutions.

Out: Den Protector, Devoted Druid, Thran Quarry, and 2 Swamps.

In: Savra, Queen of the Golgari, Infernal Tribute, Sakura-Tribe Elder, Overgrown Tombfoil, and Butcher of Malakir.

Den Protector just doesn't really do much for the deck, and I feel Butcher of Malakir has much greater value, especially with the ability to recur him, even though his casting cost is high. Devoted Druid wasn't a bad fit for the deck, but I think Sakura-Tribe Elder is much better as far as early game value. Its not as good as Yavimaya Elder, but its better than the druid. Infernal Tribute just offers too much value to the deck to not include. A sac outlet for Meren that will also net card draw. Too good, I think. A close second place is Claws of Gix, but I like the card draw over the lifegain, so Gix doesn't get in just yet. And I finally bought my first shock-land, Overgrown Tombfoil. I like this deck a lot, so it was worth it (and not really expensive as far as the shock-lands go).

Lowering mana curve

seshiro_of_the_orochi, 8 years ago

To lower my curve, I kicked two To the Slaughter and one Grapple with the Past and replaced them with three Doom Blade.

I have a feeling that I can't abuse Spider Spawning sufficiently and do consider to replace it. Ideas?

Ordered the cards

Argy, 8 years ago

I have ordered all the cards I need for this deck. I'm gonna have to dig through my collection for the others, which will take a while. Hopefully it will be ready to play by this Wednesday.

Long time no see! (Big updates!)

Triton, 8 years ago

Alright, I decided to check out this deck after putting it on the shelf for a while not working on it. I updated the description and added some more content, so it looks all up-to-date!

I have to say, after finishing up this deck, it's a blast to play! It's been able to hold its own against far more optimalized decks so I am thoroughly pleased with it.

I did also swap in some more cards:

Took out: Basic land, Trinket Mage

Added in: Wayfarer's Bauble, Etherium Sculptor

I made this change recently because the deck wound up getting mana flooded and I had plenty of artifact ramp. Trinket Mage was taken out because he didn't tutor for anything game-changing.

Also looking to cut some cards to make this deck $30 or under, so advice would be much appreciated! I'm personally thinking Brainstorm because of how little shuffling this deck has. But as always, I want to hear your thoughts, happy brewing!

removed Forest for Evolving Wilds: Kinda forgot Evolving wilds, oops

removed Strength of Cedars for Frontier Siege: Frontier Siege basically reads as this: All of our morph costs are reduced by 2, which is great! I try to make the deck more for the long run, as killing someone with just one hit rarely works sadly.

lornlynx, 8 years ago

removed Ghostway for Eerie Interlude: I have both but I have Ghostway already in another deck, so here goes Eerie Interlude which is basically the same (but cheaper)

removed Myriad Landscape for Bojuka Bog: Myriad is slow and two lands of the same type hurts a bit, instead graveyard hate

removed Selesnya Sanctuary for Hall of the Bandit Lord: Less bounce lands for a land that can make a creature hasty

removed Nylea, God of the Hunt for Vraska the Unseen: Nylea was too expensive for her pump ability and her trample was unused, Vraska instead has an interesting ultimate which is an alt wincon with Sidar

removed Mimic Vat for Phyrexian Reclamation: Mimic Vat is kinda redundant and I rather put in some actual graveyard recursion

removed Shaman of Forgotten Ways for Somberwald Sage: Gets us one more mana, the alt wincon of Shaman is kinda useless in an infect deck

Faster Ramp

Traun255, 8 years ago

Switched out Seedborn Muse for Mox Diamond. Seedborn Muse was a dead card in most cases unless I end up playing the long game. Will do some play testing to see if it'll need to be put back in.

Overhaul #1

RationallyPrime, 8 years ago

Decided that Tamiyo's Journal as a tutor combo simply wasn't going to work as it hasn't even been close to making waves in the first 8 games I played. Switching a lot of the "clue" related cards out in order to increase the energy focus and give the deck a faster start, something sorely needed.

2-2 First Modern Tournament.

Spinifex, 8 years ago

The Matches

  • 1-2 against BW Eldrazi: Yes, the first Modern tournament I ever played, and I get the mirror match as the first opponent. Game 1, I was mana screwed at one land for a very long time, but Aether Vial saved me by cheating creatures into play. Game 2 was a close one, but his flyers killed (Restoration Angel and Selfless Spirit). Game 3 I flooded heavily, and never drew anything more than a 2 CMC creature.

  • 2-1 against Scapeshift. He got game 1 by wiping my board, but I came very close thanks to coming back (with him at 1-3 life), until he topdecked a Summoner's Pact with a Through the Breach in hand for a Worldspine Wurm. Game 2, a turn 3 TKS, followed by a turn 4 TKS and a Restoration Angel to blink a TKS on his draw step turn five meant a easy win. Game 3 was closer, but he misplayed and screwed himself on one green source.

  • 0-2 against 8-Rack. I REALLY needed to draw one of my 4 Blade Splicer here. No luck. I also badly played by playing my lands on automatic.

  • 2-1 against Abzan Humans. Game one I won by removing his Collected Company with a TKS. Game 2, he outraced me and his CoCo was too strong, with already 2 Thalia's Lieutenant on the board. Game 3 was close, thanks to his Mirror Entity hitting me for 15 turn 4. However, thanks to Leonin Arbiter and Thalia, Guardian of Thraben, he couldn't CoCo his following turn. I managed to displace two of his creatures and push for lethal through Mirran Crusader and Selfless Spirit.

Lessons

The deck feels a little slow, I think I may need the 4th Selfless Spirit, probably in exchange of the Sea Gate Wreckage. I often either flooded or was screwed on mana, which means I really need to learn to shuffle better.
