Why Meren

I wanted to build around Meren of Clan Nel Toth because I love graveyard recursion and reanimation strategies. What I like about playing with is that everything is a resource: library, graveyard, life totals, all of it. I initially planned to build Meren around Volrath the Fallen, but I've decided to go a different route. This deck was inspired by hoardofnotions deck deck:mazirek-shaman-of-the-swarm-60-budget, so thank you for the inspiration.

Deck Strategies

This deck is built around lots of creature synergy, tutoring, and combos. The main combo consists of Aluren + Endless Cockroaches + Phyrexian Ghoul or another sac outlet to swing with a big creature, but there are plenty of other synergies, too. I can draw out the deck with Fecundity or Grim Haruspex, or scry through it with Viscera Seer. I can gain life and cause life loss with Blood Artist, Falkenrath Noble, and Gray Merchant of Asphodel is a finisher. I can boardwipe with Grave Pact or Dictate of Erebos, and I can smash face with Phyrexian Ghoul or any of his cousin cards in the deck. Meren can also give me good recur value with Blood Pet and Blood Vassal.

I built the deck to play casual if I like, but with more than enough tutors to go looking for combo pieces. The idea is to see how the opening draw goes, and choose a combo from there, as opposed to making sure I get one specific combo out. But I want to be able to combo off in a pinch if my opponents are getting too carried away. I've got some ideas for substitutions already, and will fill those in as I go. I'm going to list the cards I'm looking to sub in the maybeboard.

Mana Base

The deck is more black than green, so I think I've got the mana base set up to accommodate for that. When I've solitaired it out, I haven't run across any mana issues, but if there is something in the mana base that doesn't look right, please let me know. I think I've kept the mana curve fairly low, too, which is a first for me in EDH.
