the Defiled Tales from the Bullshit Crypt

This deck has been my personal magnum opus over the years. It has seen many revisions, and continues to evolve as time moves along. When I began my journey in EDH, I wanted to commander that was underrated, an underdog of the format. Who better than Balthor the Defiled? Not only did I want to build him for his grave recursion, I wanted to push it to the limit. There is a lot going on in this deck, so I will explain all of the synergistic engines to take advantage of, along with the combos.

----- The Spirit Engine -----

This deck runs an Iname engine, the starter beginning with Iname, Death Aspect. The plan is to dump Iname into the grave, then recur them to dump all of your spirits from the deck to the grave, giving you an immediate pool of strong creatures to wreak havoc with, consisting of Crypt Ghast for mana doubling, Entropic Specter, Gravewaker for alternative recursion, Horobi, Death's Wail, Kagemaro, First to Suffer, Keening Banshee, Kokusho, the Evening Star, Kuro, Pitlord, Midnight Banshee, Patron of the Nezumi, Pus Kami, and Spirit of the Night. You also get an amazing synergistic duo here with Kuro, Pitlord and Horobi, Death's Wail, paying two live to instantly kill nearly any creature. Remember, the stack is your friend, you can kill Horobi if things backfire!

----- The Devotion Engine -----

After you ignite the spirit engine, you have a good path towards devotion (28 from spirits alone) to trigger Gray Merchant of Asphodel, Abhorrent Overlord, and Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx for a shit ton of mana, damage/life, and 1/1 flying harpies for aggro or the sacrifice engine. A simple engine.
