Alela, Cunning Conqueror flashes the battlefield with Faeries that disrupt opponents and then bounce back to hand to do it again. Returning enemy permanents to hand isn't as effective as removing them but Alela's goad ability keeps opponent creatures attacking each other. With this built-in protection the bounce strategy is reinforced and opponents will struggle to attack us.

This is a classic "Draw-Go" deck where 1 in 3 cards have flash/instant speed that disrupts opponents on their turn. On our turn, we "draw" a card, play a land, and say "go" while our opponents worry over what surprises we will play on their turn.

We win through out-tempo'ing our opponents while our Faerie army builds and buffs it's way to a combat damage + direct damage victory.

Power Level: Tuned but no infinite combos.

  1. Ramp and play Alela, Cunning Conqueror. Bonus if you have Lightning Greaves or Scion of Oona on the battlefield or a protection spell in hand as our opponents will try to remove her.
  2. Play Faeries and instants on opponent turns creating flying Faerie tokens.
  3. Bounce Faeries for card advantage or opponent permanents to slow them down all while creating more Faerie tokens.
  4. Buff Faeries and attack with flying combat damage.

  1. Combat damage.
  2. Direct damage from Faerie Tauntings, Faerie Bladecrafter, and Bolas's Citadel.

  • Evasive creatures with powerful effects at instant speed
  • Opponents must fight through different types of disruption
  • Highly interactive

  • Somewhat dependent on commander so it can be turn 4+ before the engine gets going.
  • Unanswered removal can feel like quicksand

  • You enjoy playing tribal creatures.
  • You like the variable gameplay of different Faeries disrupting opponent plans in multiple ways.
  • You prefer to play your commander in every game.
  • You believe that playing interactively on opponent turns is fun.

  • You prefer to play fast aggro or total control decks rather than a midrange hybrid of both.
  • You don't want to play your commander in every game.
  • Tokens are not your style.

  • Faeries were chosen primarily on having Flash or Adventure-instants, disruption, protection, damage or card advantage. A great example of card advantage is playing Brazen Borrower's Adventure Instant Petty Theft to return a permanent to it's owner's hand, which creates a flying Faerie Rogue 1/1 creature if Alela, Cunning Conqueror is on the battlefield, then flashing Brazen Borrower in as a creature, which creates another flying Faerie Rogue 1/1 creature, then bouncing Brazen Borrower back to hand with Quickling or other instant speed bounce effects, creating another Faerie Rogue 1/1 creature, only to repeat it all again. You have bounced two permanents and you now have 7 flying Faeries ready to attack next turn.
  • Faerie Harbinger almost always gets Spellstutter Sprite (if you don't have a counterspell in hand) or Bitterblossom. Just grab what you need as you will probably bounce it and get more.
  • Even though Faerie Bladecrafter, Shadow Puppeteers, and Coat of Arms are reliable game finishers, if you get Eldrazi Monument online it will be hard for opponents to win. You won't have to keep up mana for protection and can speed up by tapping out and playing threats. It also pairs perfectly with Bitterblossom or Tegwyll, Duke of Splendor.
