Minsc & Boo, Tossing Hamsters

Commander / EDH RG (Gruul)

VayraTheGatherer

Go Hamster

Minsc & Boo is straightforward stuff, commander has abilities, you use them. The gist of this deck is copious amounts of ramp to safely cast and re-cast our commander, and come out swinging the very same turn with a Hamster of varying strength. Alternatively, one of Boo's Friends pops up to do the job for him, or alongside him. We can turn friends into Hamsters on some occasions too.

The game plan is to ramp into Minsc as fast as possible and then proceed to take out threats or players, to add major amounts of card advantage to our mana advantage. At that point we're off, and Boo can rapidly grow to attack/toss for lethal. Sacrificing Minsc to get those cards is perfectly valid as an early game strat as well; since Boo has haste, you can just repeat the trick the next turn. Commander tax is the only thing stopping you; people are going to want to kill Minsc and we generally don't have a solid defense / chump block going on. Minsc might die. A lot. The main puzzle when piloting this deck is to figure out how many deaths you can carry without slowing to a crawl.

Beware of denying yourself a victory by letting Boo's Power exceed your library. You might draw into zero and lose.

Notable cards

First, let's look at Boo's Friends. Malignus with any 'deal damage to player equal to power' effect will be a one-turn player fatality when combined with Minsc's -2. Akki Battle Squad gives us a nice body and a second combat phase every turn. Chameleon Colossus doubles as a hamster that can double its own power. Forgotten Ancient, Taurean Mauler and Managorger Hydra stack up counters, rapidly becoming threats that cannot be ignored. Solphim, Mayhem Dominus goes indestructible virtually for free to become a hard to remove damage doubler. Ghalta, Primal Hunger can be had for cheap. Halana and Alena, Partners can transplant Minsc's +1 ability to themselves.

Among the Boo'sters The Ozolith is a fantastic 1 mana powerhouse for us. One with the Kami can get pretty silly if played right, giving us a valid go wide strategy to win instead. Grafted Exoskeleton turns Boo into a 6/6 if he's had a touch of Minsc's +1 getting it very close to lethal potential through Infect; we also have Triumph of the Hordes for similar effect. Luxior, Giada's Gift doubles the counter value on Boo, and can alternatively be used on Devotion Druid for infinite green mana. Hero's Blade is an exceptionally cheap power booster for Boo, every time the critter returns it equips for free. Haze of Rage is excellent given our high mana pool and numerous cheap cantrips to enable decent Storm count. Fiendlash is underestimated, it can be used perfectly as a defensive measure on any high power creature, and just as well offensively to double our potential damage on attack and forcing tough choices for opponents. Chandra's Ignition is potentially a game finisher. Soul's Fire and Gravitic Punch are similarly great effects for us and also serve as finishers, much like Surestrike Trident and Mage Slayer.
