Necromentia

Sorcery

Choose a card name other than a basic land card name. Search target opponent's graveyard, hand, and library for any number of cards with that name and exile them. That player shuffles their library, then creates a 2/2 black Zombie creature token for each card exiled from their hand this way.

+1 Just for seeing another Arena player here using TappedOut.

It looks like you prefer a style very similar to my own. I'm normally Orzhov by default, but I've been dabbling with Esper too.

I feel like this is the kind of deck I could suggest something for, but only after playing against it a few times with a variety of deck types.

One thing that has worked well for me in a number of BO3 SIDEBOARDs for my Orzhov/Esper builds that you might try is Necromentia, particularly with all of the combo threats out there now in the meta. It's nice to be able to steal any potential threats you may struggle to deal with before the opponent can even cast them (once you realize what they are). There are other spells along this line such as Unmoored Ego but if you end up pursuing this line, I find that potential 2/2 zombies are much more reliably dealt with than potentially giving the opponent card draw. Especially in a deck running Boardwipes.

I realize the hand hate you run is already one way of dealing with this, but requiring the opponent to already have those threats in-hand is a lot less reliable than just building to 3 mana and giving it the axe from their entire deck (particularly stuff like Farewell that can really nix your strategy).

It can be quite an easy swap to make for the Thoughtseize-type cards as well, using the first game to determine the best threat(s) with hand-viewing & then determine if swapping in Necro for them is worthwhile.

Feel free to add me on Arena if you want to run some test games, or even just discuss deck builds & meta threats. Info is on my profile here.

Either way Cheers & Good Luck!

Your sideboard also looks about halfway right, there are some things you don't need like Drana and Condemned. I personally would add at least one extra Go Blank. Extinction Event might be a good add, as well as Necromentia. More hearses and maybe drop Invoke Despair to 1, lose Citadel for space.

I hope this helps!

Yeah, the only cards that make sense which I didn't really consider (I've seen them a few times) are Pick the Brain and Shimian Specter - still don't think they make the cut. Shimian Specter seems pretty disgusting if you can get it to stick around, but that would be quite the challenge in a creature based deck like this. I could see it being a decent game 2 tool in a control shell if you play little to no creatures, making them side out most of their removal, but beyond that, it is a little too fragile. I've contemplated Surgical Extraction before, but it relies on them already playing their threat, which is too late for me, since we don't have any targeted discard or mill. I ran Necromentia and Unmoored Ego for a while, but the colorless aspect of The Stone Brain just makes it worth that extra mana of investment.

Anyway, as far as card suggestions go, you can't be guaranteed that your opponent will be running instants or sorceries, so a full playset of Test of Talents might be a bit much. Against token strategies, Detention Sphere or Temporary Lockdown could be good. Not sure I'm a fan of the plan for Ethersworn Adjudicator, but it could be a decent way to close out the game. You could reduce the number of creatures overall and go with a typical control finisher, such as Chromium, the Mutable or Hullbreaker Horror. In the same vein as Extirpate, Necromentia or Unmoored Ego could be useful. With the number of enchantments you have, Sphere of Safety might be a fun way to prevent combat. You may want to include a way to remove creatures if they do get any onto the field before you can pull them out of the deck, so Supreme Verdict, Settle the Wreckage, Day of Judgment, or similar.

I actually really like the inclusion of 4 Voidwalkers since it gives the undying cards another target besides Grief, especially since one voidwalker can cast cards exiled with a different Voidwalker (or its past dead self).

Having so many fetches in mono B for deck thinning is probably not necessary imo. I would probably put like 2-3 Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth along with 3-4 Urza's Saga. Urborg also goes pretty well with a couple horizon lands like Silent Clearing. Force of Despair is a cool card that a lot of 8rack players were excited to test out when it got spoiled, personally I don't think running 3 copies is a great idea in a deck already pitching cards to Grief but you could maybe run 3 combined between mainboard and sideboard.

Path of Peril is a really funny boardwipe since a) you can sack your Dauthi anyways and b) it doesn't hit Grief. Obviously some antisynergy with Saga but its probably fine if you sequence plays correctly.

This is definitely a deck where I would put some copies of Surgical Extraction in the sideboard.

20 lands is probably on the low side, although you aren't running any Raven's Crime. Need testing for that one.

The tweaks I'd make before playtesting would probably be:

Mainboard:

-4 Bloodstained Mire -4 Verdant Catacombs -2 Force of Despair -2 Shrieking Affliction

+2 Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth +4 Urza's Saga +1 Godless Shrine +1 Silent Clearing +1 Pithing Needle +1 Nihil Spellbomb +1 Path of Peril +1 Bloodchief's Thirst/Funeral Charm/Dismember idk

Reasoning: with Saga, you can cut on Afflictions since you can tutor racks more consistently, Needle and Spellbomb are just mainboard saga target staples, and then some other removal to replace Force of Despair. Funeral Charm can let a big construct through with Urborg. What removal you choose to run is probably meta dependent.

Sideboard:

This is definitely a lot more meta dependent so I can't comment as much.

Here Necromentia can probably be replaced with Surgical Extraction.

Go Blank is decent grave hate but can be replaced with extra Nihil Spellbomb or 4 Leyline of the Void, personal preference. Also good to note that Go Blank can sometimes be too slow (vs grinding breach) and also doesn't shut down some decks as effectively as leyline like Murktide, Scam, Grinding Station, Yawgmoth, Living End, etc while Leyline stops all of those in their tracks.

Delirium Skeins is a sideboard card against Leyline of Sanctity if thats ever a problem.

Path of Peril or Bontu's Last Reckoning can replace Damnation if you find yourself badly needing a t3 boardwipe.

Collective Brutality classic sideboard card against burn, and probably much better than March of Wretched Sorrow in 95% of situations.

You can also move the Spellbomb + Needle package to the sideboard if you think mainboard is too crowded with the scam package.

Quickspell on Prevent Opposition Agent in mono …

I have a Maralen of the Mornsong EDH deck that doesn’t run Opposition Agent. How do I protect her from another player‘s Opposition Agent, though?

Edit: There are a few cards to preemptively remove it from an opponents deck, if you know who is running it. Like Praetor's Grasp, Sadistic Sacrament, Necromentia, Bitter Ordeal etc.

What other ways are there than this kind of effect?

I really enjoy your post about stomping the broken Agent of Treachery. Congrats!

On that topic, you might consider Necromentia over Unmoored Ego if it's an option for you. I used to run Ego in a few dimir builds, but I find dealing with 2/2's for any hand-selected cards is vastly preferential to giving my opponent card draw (even if it's not that often).

Especially with how much control you run in this build, I think giving 2/2 zombies instead of card draw just plays right into the rest of your build. Your mana base is straightened out to the point where I don't think double black mana is going to make or break you, but I concur wholeheartedly on keeping at least a 1-of for a card with that function (either Necromentia or Unmoored Ego if you disagree with my opinion).

Yeah, I've seen that card and thought it could possibly fit in here when I added The Gitrog Monster, I'm just not sure where I could possibly fit it. I compare it to Abrupt Decay which is better because it's wider, and an instant (actually really important).

Closest things I could see myself cutting on the side is Anguished Unmaking or Doomskar (maybe even Necromentia) as those are my most unused sideboard cards. I can't see it getting a mainboard slot, as I already struggled to fit in Arena. I'm not sure if it is better than any of those options. I don't see it being particularly useful against any specific decks either, so the way I would use it would be more of a maindeck flexslot probably, which I personally don't see the space for.

My biggest concern with it is that I can't really target myself with the first ability reliably, because if I mill at least one vital land it could potentially backfire if I don't have the land drop left for the turn. On that same note, it can be used as a way to dig for lands, which adds some potential lines of play.

I'll consider it and try to see if I can make room somewhere.
