Moving this deck to Modern

xxCopperheadx, 8 years ago

With the rotation about to happen, this deck will no longer be standard legal. I'm moving it to Modern format now and adding some changes.

Took out the two copies of Authority of the Consuls because they didn't do a whole lot. Dropped the Hallowed Fountainfoil and Port Town. Moved both copies of Stony Silence to the sideboard. Added two copies of Aven Mindcensor and two copies of Ethersworn Canonist, and tossed in a couple of Path to Exile just 'cause.

07-13-2017 Update

tru13, 8 years ago

I ended up going to 3 Metallic Mimic and dropping Anointed Procession to 2 for a couple of reasons.

1) Mana curve a still a little high to have that additional 4 cost card.

2) Anointed Procession is good but it only works when it comes to tokens and I needed this deck to be more aggressive.

3) The additional +1/+1 counter on each cat is huge especially for cards like the Adorned Pouncer which has double strike and for the Sacred Cat with lifelink. It only gets better when eternalize and embalm are used as well due to additional boosts. It just makes Metallic Mimic that much better while its still in rotation.

Other Notes: I'm keeping this basic in terms of lands. I don't want to get hung up on cycling the lands I have or having them come into play tapped. I want this deck to run from start to finish. I'm only going to be adding Sunpetal Grove from Ixalan when it comes out right now and I'll go from there once the rest of the cards are released.

This will be my Starting deck as of today, 7-13-2017, for when FNM happens tomorrow on Friday.

HOD Update

Mandalorian, 8 years ago

Hello all, I cant believe its been almost a year since updating, but here's all the recent changes!

Last update tirless tracker had just come out and people were still on the fence about how efficient clues were. Well its safe to say that they very much are and so Tireless Tracker certainly makes the cut.

I switched out Horn of Greed for Nissa, Vital Force since her ultimate is essentially the same thing except its a may ability which could be relevant.

I switched out some of the more powerful tutors for some other relevant cards since I had felt that the tutors were making the deck too linear but added Anointed Procession and Ramunap Excavator

Added Scattered Groves since its another dual that Karametra can tutor for.

Lastly, and I think many people running Explosive Vegetation will do this also, I switched Explosive Vegetation or Hour of Promise since at 1 more mana it can get any lands including Nykthos, duals, Cradle if you have one.

Anyway that all I changed for now. I mess around with Scapeshift + Splendid Reclamation every now and again and sometimes sub stuff like Sporemound or green retreat to mix it up and tone down the power level. Other than that though, the deck is still really fun to play. Any further suggestions are appreciated!

WNM 3-1: Deck Ratio 8-7

akrondo21, 8 years ago

Another good turnout with probably 30 to 35 people

Match 1 vs Grixis Death's Shadow WLW: Game one had him pegged for Grixis Control but his last turn he revealed a Death's Shadow off of a Thought Scour before I burned him out. Game 2 he dropped double Death's Shadow and was able to counter two lethal Boros Charmfoils in a row. Game 3 I pulled a nut draw with Goblin Guide, Path to Exile, and a Relic of Progenitus and was able to get there pretty effortlessly.

Match 2 vs Elves LL: One of my favorite match-ups due to me playing both Burn and Elves. Game 1 was down to his last turn as I had lethal ready, but a Collected Company into two Elvish Archdruids gave him exactly lethal on the swing. Game 2 I mulled to 4 before I had a keepable hand. We went close, but an Elvish Archdruid off the top gave him enough power to present lethal and I top decked an Arid Mesa instead of the lethal burn. Good games overall.

Match 3 vs Scapeshift WLW: I'm not too sure how the match-up is supposed to be, but it was a close match for me. Game 1 I raced and beat him by a turn even after bolting a T3 Primeval Titan. Game 2 he dropped T2 Obstinate Baloth, T3 Primeval Titan, T4 Primeval Titan. Game 3 I kept an 17 damage starting hand and was able to Deflecting Palm a Primeval Titan for the win. Fun games overall.

Match 4 vs Valakut Titian WW: This opponent was on a Primeval Titan and Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle beatdown plan with no Scapeshift. Game 1 I was too fast for him, and game 2 I kept a hand with 2 Path to Exile and was able to deal with everything he played.

-2 Raven's Crime: They aren't good in multiples.

-1 Land: 29 seemed a bit high.
+1 Cathartic Reunion: If it's not countered, it's very nice.

Card Upgrade 19

Driemer84, 8 years ago

-Overseer of the Damned +Razaketh, the Foulblooded Overseer was a fun card, but only occasionally did I produce a meaningful amount of tokens off his secondary ability. He's easily replaced by Razaketh, the Foulblooded. This card seems insane. A huge beater that can't be chump blocked, a sac outlet, and a Demonic Tutor all in one.

Updates CMD16, KLD, AER, AKH, HOU

cgomes, 8 years ago

There are several new sets online (CMD16, KLD, AER, AKH, and HOU). There are several interesting cards, so I'll talk about each one of them below:

Recruiter of the Guard: Tutors a good range of creatures, such as Stoneforge for clamp, EWitness for gy recursion, Oracle for mana, Kiki for combo, and Hermit for tokens. Those are more than enough reasons to find a place for it in this deck. Removing Nahiri to add this one. As much as I like Nahiri, I've been very unimpressed with her in this deck. 2 turns to ultimate is still too slow. I'd rather tutor for a creature that does exactly what I need.

Fragmentize: Good removal but Nature's Claim is way better.

Gideon of the Trials: Very situational. It can save you from a Final Fortune fizzle but then again, I've never seen FF fizzle (if it does, you are doing it wrong anyway). This card does not help us finish the game, so I don't think it will find a place in this deck.

Chandra, Torch of Defiance: Solid card--makes mana and gives you card advantage. However, it's too slow for this deck.

Vizier of the Menagerie: Interesting card. I've not tested it yet but my feeling is that it doesn't fit this deck. It seems high variance (higher than Oracle for sure) and I've never had an issue casting creatures. It might help you get around blood moon effects but unless I see more people running such effects, I wouldn't consider it to be a priority.

Indomitable Creativity: We can make tokens and get value. It requires lots of tokens and mana though. If I had those, I'd rather cast Behemoth and win the game instead.

Authority of the Consuls: It does a lot of things, none of which will help us win the game. Nah.

Harvest Season: Now this is a good card for creature-based decks. It would be an auto-include if it were not for the "X is the # of tapped creatures" part of it. Now, if lands entered the battlefield untapped, I'd still include this card, but they don't. Overall, I think it might be okay as an alternative to other ramp spells. If I was running Cultivate, I'd probably remove it and run Harvest instead.

Ramunap Excavator: It's a Crucible of Worlds in the form of a creature. Honestly, I think it's better than Crucible in this deck, as we can get it from any creature tutor, which we have plenty. Dropping Crucible to test Ramunap.

By Force: If you are destroying 2 or 3 artifacts, it's better than Vandalblast. If you are destroying 1 or more than 4, however, it's worse. In single player, I think By Force is better than Vandalblast, but in multiplayer, Vandalblast is still better. Deck is for multiplayer, so By Force won't make the cut.

That said, I'm also cutting Vandalblast. Artifacts are rarely a problem for what we are trying to do, and it there's a problematic one, we have many other ways to remove it. For this reason, I'm adding Carpet of Flowers to the list. Blue is the best color, so there's usually islands on the other side of the battlefield.

Unfortunately the blood knights were replaced by emissaries, I like the flying and upkeep ticks over having to make sure my knights had an enchant or coinsmith down

First FNM; Placed 1-4

InnerFlame, 8 years ago

In my first time out with the deck, I placed somewhere in the top 4, but we all decided to draw to split the prize.

Game 1: Infect- Won 2-0 off of beating him with Inkmoth Nexus.

Game 2: Shadow- Won 2-0 again as I just did too much damage too quickly. Etched champion really came in clutch post board when the opponent brought in removal.

Game 4: Bushwacker zoo- Lost 1-2 off of just getting beat down by multiple midrange creatures but it was a close one every time. Spell Pierce really helped me win one after a Deflecting Palm.

Game 5: Dredge- lost 2-1 after not being prepared with much graveyard hate and getting outpaced.

Game 6: GR Tron- Won 2-0 after outpacing quickly the second game, and Spell Pierce saving me from an ugin the second.

Game 7: Bushwacker zoo- won 2-0 and got to redeem myself this time around. Etched Champion and Spell Pierce both saved the day.

Overall I was pretty happy with the deck. It performed well. The four copies of Spell Pierce worked out wonderfully and fit the meta. Also, the last minute decision to trade a Blinkmoth Nexus for a fourth Spire of Industry made it so I only had no color once the entire night; I will likely keep the deck like this. I will, however, change the lack of graveyard hate and maybe add another Blood Moon.

As a razelfark correctly pointed — The Locust God was a too rare guy in the deck and Hollow One missed some certain level of discard or cycle. Keeping the deck at low 60 card level I decided to get rid of Hollow One and Crash Through, add more lands and another copy of The Locust God.

Deck is still in progress and requires more testing gameplay.

Recent changes to the deck have had me adding increasingly more Blue, first with Sarkhan Unbroken, then with a couple Stubborn Denial, and now the full set of denial alongside the flavor of Nicol Bolas, God-Pharaoh. I completely dropped Lightning Bolt because it was always underwhelming in a meta of Death's Shadow, Tron, Taking Turns, and Lantern Control. Stubborn Denial has been hugely impactful in both disrupting my opponents and protecting my dragons so I'm giving it the full set over bolt. Bolas is coming in over Dragonlord Kolaghan because Bolas.
