Erebos
Bababad, 11 years ago
so, in testing i found that having Erebos, God of the Dead was far more useful than Purphoros, God of the Forge
ideal situation
Geralf's Messenger + Gravecrawler = 5/7 indestructible
oh lol, they use Path to Exile or something akin to it
sacrifice gravecrawler, causes erebos to no longer be a creature...fizzles removal...and you just beat down your opponents face in this manner indefinitely
(not to mention a life cap, card draw, a use for the life buffer)

Success!
EfYeahItsAlex, 11 years ago
I have yet to be able to play this deck at an FNM, but I've had a LOT of success playtesting against my friends. (Let me just say that I play with a pretty competitive group of people, so I feel like being successful in playtesting bodes well).
The only deck I seem to have trouble with is Esper Control. It's basically a race to see who can stick their Aetherling first. I'm thinking about adding Counterflux to the sideboard and taking out the two "for fun" cards.
I'll update here with my FNM results once I finally get a Friday off.

Ruric Thar, the Unbowed
Saltnlight86, 11 years ago
This is an aggro gruul deck centered mostly around bombs and creatures with abilities that I can use instead of playing instants and sorceries, so I won't take 6 from Ruric's abilites...
Fixed up mana base

Should be smoother now that I ran this deck list through a mana calculator.

TNM Nov14

went 3-1 for the night good for 3rd place.
Rnd 1: BW midrange (rietzle list from pro tour theros) W2-0
Both games were pretty straight forward, I was able to control the board fairly easily with spot removal and verdicts and cruise through with Elspeth, Sun's Champion game 1 and Blood Baron of Vizkopa game 2. He did mainboard Merciless Eviction which worked well as a board wipe for blood baron but ultimately couldn't maintain enough pressure.
rnd 2: Izzet control L1-2
Izzet control which during play testing against earlier in the night managed to win 9/10 games. the games ultimately came down to whether or not I could stick an Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver turn 3 as it generally just controlled the game. game 1 he won with a monstroused Stormbreath Dragon. Game 2 I won with Elspeth, Sun's Champion. Game 3 came down to my board of 2x blood baron v his 2 stormbreath. He stuck a Jace, Memory Adept back up with a Counterflux to mill me out. Counterflux really devastated my deck.
rnd 3: mono blue control: W2-1 game 1 he curved out perfectly and smashed me for the win. Game 2 and 3 I was able to Thoughtseize him off curve and Pithing Needle aetherling to control the game for the win.
rnd 4: Mono green aggro: W2-0 bunch of undercosted beaters and pumped it up with Bow of Nylea. outside of Witchstalker being a bit awkward to handle. I just pushed through easily both rounds killing everything he had.
Overall pleased with the results, my only loss could have gone either way in a tough 3rd match. Switching 1 Wear / Tear for a 2nd negate in the sideboard along with replacing 1 Doom Blade with another Hero's Downfall main and adding in Cyclonic Rift in place of azorious charm to bounce stormbreath or planeswalkers/enchaments

No longer budget?
asdoiuj, 11 years ago
I don't know that I'd consider this a budget deck anymore since it's up around $50.
I think adding a fourth Supreme Verdict is good. It's stronger than a fog, and allows for use of Urban Evolution and Thoughtflare over the Divination I was running. I dropped Dreadbore for Catch / Release which, in my humble opinion, is some beefy tech. By the time I have BR available, it's because I've already dropped a Maze's End, so the added 4 CMC is trivial. Additionally, this wipes with the effectiveness of Planar Cleansing combined with the inability to dodge that Merciless Eviction offers.
I like the playset of Heroes' Reunion over a playset of fogs because I can burn it earlier in the game, and it protects against burn spells. It has the same CMC as Druid's Deliverance and Defend the Hearth, but since I've added 3 board wipes, it lowers the effective damage reduction of my fogs, which makes the card worth more as effective mitigation. In the same vein, I subbed a couple more 2 CMC fogs for 2x Saruli Gatekeepers, since it's life gain + small creature mitigation.
Lastly, the Blind Obedience is a direct response to two things: RDW and Obzedat, Ghost Council. I no longer need to fear obzedat because he is only 2 damage per turn instead 2 + a fog. I effectively dropped the Bramblecrush for these since I've added more board wipes, which also increases the card's effectiveness.
My sideboard is all about slowing down control sideboard, since I feel pretty good now about aggro and burn matchups. The board may still change, but I like where this is headed. I end up dropping the 4th Verdict, but I have to playtest more. I'm still in love with Treasured Find and still feel that it is at minimum a mandatory playset in any flavor of this deck.
I also added a couple Plains due to having fewer fogs, adding the urban evos, a fourth verdict, and therefore wanting to clear the board more.
Other cards I dropped due to limited effectiveness:
Gatecreeper Vine - I was actually playing this card incorrectly, thinking I could play the land I find. Knowing that it just gives me a free land makes me not really care about this card at all now. Sure it helps for stability, and I may add one back in the future, but most of my deck is GWB so I can't really foresee a situation where I'm lacking a particular land that costs me the game. If I do run into that in future playtesting, I'll consider dropping a land for the Vine.
Blustersquall - This was a pretty weak attempt at overloading on fogs. 4 CMC for a tap fog that can maybe hit mana dorks mid-late in a game when I already have 3-4 fogs probably still in my hand was just overkill. Same with Aetherize, which is largely a one-trick pony. Once you cast it, your opponent won't bother again. Dropping partial playsets of the Druid's Deliverance and Defend the Hearth were partially a response to a trend I noticed last week where my opponents started picking at me rather than full swinging, knowing I wouldn't want to block an unbuffed 1-3 damage, and overloading my hand with fogs when I could otherwise just clear the board.
The last change I'm thinking of is subbing a Slaughter Games for Reap Intellect. Quicken + Reap Intellect in response to an EOT Sphinx's Revelation could be just deadly. It could also have some good utility against gruul and orzhov midrange decks (decks which would play more cautiously against my deck in game 2's and load their hands with non-counterspells).
Overall, this deck just feels much stronger, and really takes over a game quickly, whereas the previous iteration was slower, but more surefire against my opponents' big cards. Too often if I lost it was because I didn't have some removal, couldn't gain life, or ran out of cards. This new iteration addresses each of those concerns.

ok so i made some changes for my local meta game and they are taking anger of the gods out completely and siding it in vs aggro it makes me weak vs game 1 to aggro but i have been beating control consistently game one and two no problem at all i put the 3rd obzedat main board and acquired a third blood baron for the side when vs white black or any similar deck that has mostly w or b removal and creatures erebos is in the side for when i face lifegain decks such as the mirror match as im sure they are going to have their answers for my deck i need my own for theirs also time for a comment clean up
More aggressive
AL5700, 11 years ago
Okay so I've figured a couple of things out... First of all I'm removing Grisly Salvage because it just doesn't get it's job done, I'd rather cast a creature instead of drawing a card, and even though some are scavenge I almost never get to cast them for that cost.
Second I need to make the deck a little bit more aggressive so i put in four Desecration Demon and removed two Corpsejack Menace because it just isn't aggressive enough, I mean if i have that and Kalonian Hydra on borad it's win but most of the time one of them wont be there or will get removed. And I also exchanged Varolz, the Scar-Striped with Dreg Mangler because I feel it's a stronger pick overall
Third I put in 2 Doom Blade because I needed more removal, also sideboarded some Dark Betrayal in case I'm up agaisnt mono-black.
If you have any more suggestions please leave a comment and I'll think about it ;)

Sideboard!
Araganor, 11 years ago
A sideboard has just been added to the deck! Here's what each card can do for us:
Pithing Needle: Stops AEtherling, planeswalkers, monstrosity, Lotleth Troll, etc.
Bubbling Cauldron: All of those elemental tokens become Brindle Boars against voltron decks.
Glaring Spotlight: Gets through hexproof annoyances like Prognostic Sphinx. Can be sacrificed to protect your cards if necessary
Elixir of Immortality: Combat mill, and refill your library in long matchups.
Catch / Release: Steal their planeswalker, waste its loyalty, then burn it down. Has the added bonus of being a high CMC, without actually having a high cost to cast.

Update
Araganor, 11 years ago
Time to clear out the comments, they were getting a bit out of hand. Anyway, I'm trying out something here, so bear with me. I'm dropping the 2 Goblin Elecromancer for another Izzet Charm and a third Blast of Genius. Hopefully it works out.
PS: I'm done keeping track of the price, it keeps changing!

I've was lucky enough to pull a Domri Rade Saturday and have added him to the lineup. I've also swapped Mistcutter Hydra to the main board in place of Biomass Mutation

First Impressions
SilverhawkPX45, 11 years ago
I'm not happy. The deck sometimes does what it's supposed to do, but for the most part it is a removal slinging bore, and that was NOT what I intended. I'm putting the deck on ice for now and will concentrate on getting both 8.5 Tails and Derevi into a playable and, above all, fun shape. This does not mean the deck is dead, but it needs some serious remodeling for now.
