Tightening up the CMC

Oow, 6 years ago

Removing some of the more expensive cards, and adding more draw/card advantage.

IN:

  • Chemister's Insight - Instant speed draw with possibly two prowess triggers.

  • Haze of Rage - Fits better with the token subtheme.

  • Impulse - It's back! Instant speed card selection seems to be very important for this deck.

Harabaz Druid

Dorotheus, 6 years ago

if you want to, you can remove 2 Oran-Rief Survivalist and a land or 3 Aether Vials for 3 Harabaz Druid keeping in mind it does nothing for aggression, but it can get fast Cocos, I wouldn't recommend more than 3 if you want to try it, but playing only 2 seems awkward.

Alright, everything has been updated, I believe everything has been addressed as well. Have fun!

A Grenade for a King

SandyNigz, 6 years ago

There were some games where I noticed that if I had another Goblin Grenade in my hand, I would've won the game. So I am dropping a copy of Goblin King for another Goblin Grenade. I don't think I need a playset of the lord in my deck since this deck isn't supposed to be lord heavy anyway. The combo of mountainwalk with Blood Moon is nice though, and it adds some resiliency to this deck.

Better Mana and Leyline of Sanctity removal.

Ruecian, 6 years ago

Pitched Alpine moon from sideboard for Destructive Revelry to deal with Leyline of Sanctity. Changed out 4 mystic/llanowar elves for 4 noble hierarchs cause we want that blue. Replaced most of the cultivate/kodama's reach with Rattleclaw Mystic because it nets us two more mana for turn 3 just like Sarkhan Fireblood. Might get more Manamorphose (only own one right now) and work them into the deck to help convert that green mana into precious blue or red. it's also pretty much like running four fewer cards in the deck since it replaces itself at no loss of mana.

Added Zhalfirin Void

Argy, 6 years ago

It's not a Wastes but it can help me draw into Wastes by Scrying away something which is not a Wastes.

It also gives me , so my removal of a Wastes for it doesn't slow the deck down.

Followed some suggestions, added more ramp, toned down the removal, swapped a few creatures and tried to get a slightly higher count, though i'm still pretty low for regular tribal. (+ Even more card draw!) I'll see how this feels for a bit then decide if I need to up the vamp count.

FNM

Third place first round bye, second round L W L vs Sultai, third round W W vs Boros fourth round W W vs Dimir

I got my butt kicked

patrickloyd, 6 years ago

I finally got a chance to play this deck at FNM, and it didn't go too well. The first match I lost 0-2 to a dimir control deck. The guy kept discarding my control cards before I could use them then he would slowly take away my health until game. That was probably just a bad match-up for my deck. The second match-up was izzet burn/control. I went 1-1 draw with this deck. The first match I lost because he played Niv-Mizzet, Parun and anytime I tried to kill it he would draw a card and I would be burned. The second match-up I managed to keep him under control and I did that pretty well and won thanks to Sanguine Sacrament. The third and last match-up was green/black mid range. His deck I thought would be the easiest to control but then he played Carnage Tyrant and it was GG both times. So after so analysis of my first build, I realized I had too much removal, not enough late game win-cons, and no way to gain any life if I needed to. So I took out a Cast Out, Seal Away, and a Ritual of Soot from my main and added Cleansing Nova, Sanguine Sacrament, and a Dawn of Hope. The point of the main-board is to be pretty broad game one and just try to control my opponent. The next game is when my sideboard comes into play, for mirror matches and mid-range, I have added 2x Negate, for creature heavy decks, I have added a Ritual of Soot for decks with low creature mana average, and a Cleansing Nova for the high average and also Essence Scatter. For really aggressive decks I have added 2x Settle the Wreckage. For dimir, I have added 2x Duress, and 2x Thought Erasure. For burn I have added a Sanguine Sacrament. For my discretion if I feel I need it, I have added 2x Disdainful Stroke. Many cards I have side boarded I run in my main deck which is why there are a lot of 1 and 2 of. The point is to try to target the sideboard with the right type of deck.I have also replaced a Evolving Wilds with a Detection Tower since it it most likely be much more useful. I am debating weather to add another one but I am not sure since it only a colorless mana, what do you guys think? Finally, If you have any suggestions feel free to give them and if you think this is a well rounded deck hit that +1.

Minor changes after testing

GoblinsBeatElves, 6 years ago

Here’s the games I ave played so far:

Temur Evolve Aggro: 0-1

UG Morph: 1-0

RG Dino Tribal: 1-0

U/W Bogles: 2-1

Torment of Hailfire is good as a finisher, but shows up too often early game, when I don’t want it, so I’m going down to 2 copies there, and adding more Sign in Blood. For the time being, this should work. Pack Rat was a good card, I knew, but has performed so much better than I had hoped, and won me games I wouldn’t have otherwise.

A lot of talk in the Valakut discussion

dgee13, 6 years ago

Hadn't played the week prior, but been trying to keep up with the conversation about some surprising includes. Decided to try Faithless Lootings after a good amount of support from others that have played with them to moderate success.

Still don't have that one "big, dumb creature" in the SB, but I don't think it will matter too much as those matchups are already favorable. Unlike the people in the discussions, they don't have 3+ other Titanshift players at the shop. Therefore, that spot is will go to Crumble to Dust.

Still torn with the inclusion of Rest in Peaces. Have yet to cast them despite facing combo and graveyard decks every week. Taking up valuable SB slots. After tonight, will decided whether to cut them or not.

Yay, got that Hour of Devastation! However, discussions about that or Dragonlord Atarka. Curses!

Decks to expect:

  • UWx control
  • combo (KCI, Storm)
  • Dredge
  • Phoenix variants
  • Bant Spirits
  • GB midrange

----- Changes -----

2 Sweltering Suns -- 2 Anger of the Gods

Wood Elves, Explore -- 2 Faithless Looting

(SB) Alpine Moon -- Crumble to Dust

(SB) Anger of the Gods #2 -- Hour of Devastation

(SB) Damping Sphere #3 -- Roast

Small Weekly Modern Tournament 4 Rnd 2-2 Finish

Ihazadeck, 6 years ago

It wasnt a great outings but that's fine. Rnd 1 The Mirror and I win 2-1. The mirror is funny, my deck is foiled out with the exception of lands. My opponent is a friend they have my non foils, so we knew our decks very well. I won the dye roll which usually puts me in a huge advantage, the mirror favors the dye roll winner usually. They are straight mono green no white sideboard so i have an advantage with bringing in path. Rnd 2 I faced Izzet Phoenix and lost 2-1. Every game we had came down to a wire. Game 2 wasnt close for them cause they flooded and i had an early Rest in Peace they didnt see coming. They can race just as fast and they can churn thru their own deck. We can race them with pump spells, I still think its favored on their side. Rnd 3 I faced Bant Spirits and lost 2-0. This isnt a match i like, i know some people Firespout for this match up but they have creatures with interactive spells that can just wreck me. flying is also really tough for me to deal with and they have lords too, this and humans usually outclass us. The creature match up isnt something want to face, he have strong ground game and can race but creatures that get bigger and have text can usually outclass us. Rnd 4 I faced Esper Reanimator and won 2-0. I should do good against this match up, they dont have too much spot removal and they rely a lot on Thoughtseize and Supreme Verdict till they can Reanimate a fatty. They need time and i deprive them of it. Mana Tithe flexed hard this game.

Almost got most of the deck(Still need the Iroas)

handymendy, 6 years ago

Tested it against a golgari deck, played two matches but only won one out of two where i got creature screwed because i had 4 mana and two creatures in my hand, so i recommend having atleast 1 mana of each mana and one, two, three drops in your starting hand. But i have not played it against a human deck ill be facing soon so that will be interesting and how the deck will face the multiplayer plattform with the sidedeck ill provide it with.

Demigod of Revenge OTK??

Pheanial, 6 years ago

This is a Demigod of Revenge deck. Basic premise is to get 3 Demigod into the grave, 1 into your hand. Play the demigod in your hand, pulling the other 3 from grave. The kill spells can be replaced with whatever you have/want. Doom Blade, Terror, and Murder are some options. Brainspoil searches Demigod and Dimir Machinations searches Buried Alive. Tormenting voice bins a Demigod from hand. Viscera Dragger and Sign in Blood are just general draw power. Squee because, well, Squee. Who doesn't like a creature thats impossible to get rid of.

2 wins, 2 draws

OberstHati, 6 years ago

Today was the first Field Test for this build, worked like I thought it would. Round 1: Monogreen elves Opponent didn’t get past 3 forests, flipped treasure map turn 5, landdrops every turn, nova, t6 Teferi, syncopate Steel leaf, then start to combo off. Opponent conceded only when I was down on 7 handcards, library 2 nexus,... Match 2 perfect start for the Stompy, I didn’t draw blue mana, dead turn 5. Match 3 worked well, combo off, timeout, extraturns, draw. Round 2 Drakes. Match 1 loss, everything was fine, then I drew 8 lands in a row, in the end lacked answers,... Match 2 concede after I ixalaned crackling drake and Niv, was a good match, boarded out 3 revitalize , 1 insight, 1 Sabotage for 2 Ixalan, 1 settle, 2 negate, worked. Match 3 we didn’t start anymore. Round 3 Budget drakes Match 1 he conceded after I had 3 extraturns with Azcanta flipped and Teferi running. Match 2 concede after I Ixalaned enigma and crackling drake, combopieces on the board. Round 4: Dimir Control disinformation campaign. Match 1: concede after I started comboing off, opponent was a bit unlucky , had both color lands in starting hand , I syncopated t2 thought erasure, he didn’t draw fast enough, again treasure map helped me win. Match 2 concede, he wanted to play FNM modern, was a tight match until he conceded, could have gone both ways,... Conclusion: I like this brew, even though it is a really tiring way to play and win. Shock lands will help a lot, but it’s playable like this. I think the balance for match 1 is quite good, you can defeat control and Aggro, after boarding a good match 2 is more or less guaranteed, so I guess I will keep playing this pain in the ass list,...

Tested in Play - Made some Significant Changes

Sanguinauron, 6 years ago

After some time and deliberation and seeing how the deck played, I noticed a few flaws. If I didn't manage the deck well I would get overrun too quickly, plus sometimes people would be able to activate their combos before they reached lethal damage.

As a result, I added some catch-up cards and created a combo of my own.

I removed Sign in Blood as I often had enough card draw and rarely did I make the opponent draw and lose life with my relevant enchantments on the board. I also removed 1x Raven's Crime since 1 seemed to be sufficient. I also removed 1x Swamp and 1x Barren Moor since land at a 1/3rd ratio seemed sufficient, and to make room for some extra cards in the decklist.

Temporal Extortion also does not work as well as expected and I would no longer recommend the card.

Damnation is a great inclusion to the deck as a 2-of, especially since you can tutor it out of the deck if you don't have it when necessary. Yawgmoth's Will is the star card of the deck as a singleton, since I can cast the ramp spells out of the graveyard and pull off some ridiculous combos, especially if my opponent has enchantment/artifact hate, and I have already cast both of my tutor cards. This combo in tandem with an inclusion of a singleton Exsanguinate, since you have so much open mana to dump by the end of this combo from Yawgmoth's Will.

Dash Hopes also helps to go along with this, either for early catch up, or to go against heavy control decks and really put the pressure on.

If for some reason you are going against a life-gain deck or something that is super heavy control oriented, you can always have your Howling Mine and Anvil of Bogardan deck your opponent out while you cast Necropotence and sit pretty, shutting off the valve since you no longer have a draw step. It rarely is necessary, but it can also come in handy if you feel the need to combo out your opponent turn 2 and win for game.

Changes while the Juassic theme is playing?

Dragon-Marti, 6 years ago

Kewl, kewl. Deck's been pretty fun, and even managed to surprise a very critical friend of mine and he complimented the deck's ability to win :D

And the much anticipated changes:

out -> in

Thrashing Brontodon -> Aura Shards - Brontodon is kinda lackluster compared to Shards, which can break almost the entire artificial board after a single Gishath hit.

Primal Command -> Needletooth Raptor - I wanna try running more enrage creatures just to see if it...uh...works. I can't put it to words, I just want to add a few more. Smol raptor seemed like a good removal tool but I'm already feeling vulnerable. The Command might find its way back soon enough.

Atzocan Seer -> Rampaging Brontodon - TappedOut is trying to convince me my deck isn't EDH legal because this card is in here. Anyway, now THAT is an angry Brontodon squints at Thrashing Brontodon ! Amazing card, I won't even feel bad for hard casting it because it can kill people. Can't wait to try it out! I did like the Seer because he was ramp, but yea...

Lightning Greaves -> Keeper of Progenitus- Ok, I removed boots for a mana dork, but bear with me. Sometimes, not being able to iinteract with my own creature can be a problem. I am willing to let this go in favor of more ramp.

Sylvan Reclamation ->Steely Resolve- I know I just said I wanted to interact with my creatures, but this card, I think is very powerful and I want to at least give it a chance. I already do have a lot of Artifact/enchantment removal, so I'm not too hurt over loosing the Reclamation.

I ended up removing general good stuff like

Swords to Plowshares -> Rampant Growth

Path to Exile -> Asceticism

I aim for speed, basic board control and protection, so these cards were slowing me down. It doesn't help that those two particular removal spells almost always find their way in almost every build with white I make. I try to be the scariest thing on the board so people have to dig and hope for their removal, not the other way around. Strategy is working well, so far.
