Sideboard

The Vast and the Furious is a fairly usual, if quite creature-heavy, Heavenly Inferno aggro deck. I chose creatures such as Nekrataal over other spells that have similar effects to differentiate this deck slightly from the usual Kaalia Good Stuff. These guys can be reused with a number of effects, such as recursion with the likes of Reya Dawnbringer or Oversold Cemetery or blink effects Ghostway. The numerous creatures are also backed by damage doubling effects such as True Conviction, additional combat step effects such as Aggravated Assault, and a few enters-the-battlefield triggers like Mentor of the Meek. The deck runs mass land destruction to shut down the opponents to close out the game, as my Kaalia deck has had a tendency to roll over to a combination of opponents' Wrath effects and an empty hand. For groups that frown on mass land destruction, the 'side board' consists of less strong but still fun cards I can run instead.

I put a lot of thought into my card choices, even the basic lands and tokens. I selected my basic lands carefully to fit the themes of the deck. The 4 Swamps, 4 Mountains, and 4 of the plains are from the Commander preconstructed product Kaalia was printed in. Another 4 Plains are from the Divine vs. Demonic duel decks thanks to the angels and demons in the deck. The final set of 4 Plains are from Odyssey, which was a tribal block whose third set, Scourge, had a dragon subtheme (Scourge did not have lands of its own, however). Despite Avacyn Restored being an angel-themed set with a handful of demons, Avacyn Restored Plains were not included because there are only three different sets for each basic land, not four. Regarding the tokens, I thought the dove bird token looked too bright and weak for this deck, and preferred the art for Angelic Page over the spirit art, so I created my own tokens using Magic Set Editor. Those can be seen here: http://sarroth.tumblr.com/post/81581668149/i-love-magic-set-editor.

Since I pulled a Godless Shrine from a booster pack, I’m tempted to splurge on a Sacred Foundry, which could replace Cascading Cataracts. I am also considering adding Savai Triome, Alpine Meadow, and Snowfield Sinkhole to replace Terramorphic Expanse and Evolving Wilds, and I guess a Rupture Spire style land or a Ravnica bounce land. I’ve also been holding out hope for a Lair land for white/black/red (e.g., something like an "Oros' Aerie" and lands for Intet, Numot, Teneb, and Vorosh to go with Crosis's Catacombs, Darigaaz's Caldera, Dromar's Cavern, Rith's Grove, and Treva's Ruins – seriously, I'm glad Command Tower exists but am surprised new Lair lands weren't printed with the first Commander set as well, since they were wedge colors and reprinted those dragons). If one were ever made, I could drop another Rupture Spire variant or Ravnica bounce land.
