Group Hug, You Say?

Why yes, my good fellow, yes it is. 'But Nickel', I hear you ask, 'Black doesn't DO Group Hug. It's the anathema of Group Hug, it's not beneficial to all the players, it's not........Friendly.' Well, dear friend, that's where you're wrong! Like there are many colours in Magic, so too are there many types of hugs.

And this is the kind of hug that strangles people until the life drains from their feeble forms, choking the last breaths from their broken, shattered bodies.

Like if you were being hugged by a malicious and sadistic boa constrictor.

So let's get into this, then, eh?

The Ramp.

The first main part of this deck is the ramp. It is important to maintain the illusion that you are being benign, and the easiest way to do that is to turtle up and build a powerful manabase. Luckily, we've several lovely pieces to play with. You know 'em (or don't), you love 'em (or you will), so let's see 'em, eh?

Sol Ring , Mind Stone , Worn Powerstone , Caged Sun , Burnished Hart , Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx : The classics. You know what they do. They do mana, and they do it well. Really well. Nothing much to say here.

Skull of Ramos , Commander's Sphere , Everflowing Chalice , Unstable Obelisk , Fractured Powerstone : The sidekicks and corner cases. Listen, chaps, every little bit of mana helps, and when you can possibly maneuver that into a spurt of mana at a crucial time, an additional card, a roll of the Planar Die (where applicable), or blowing up a permanent, it helps to have it around.

Nirkana Revenant , Liliana of the Dark Realms : Hey now, it's the all stars. Nirkana will add whenever you tap a Swamp, and Lili can both tutor you up Swamps and possibly make your Swamps QUADRUPLE THEIR OUTPUT, which is nothing to scoff at.

The Hug Itself.

First off, we've got our general himself, Seizan, Perverter of Truth . Every player's upkeep, that player gets a Sign in Blood . Ups everyone's card draw from one card to three at the cost of two life an upkeep. Simple, sweet.

Next, the sacrificial implements. Capital Punishment , Fleshbag Marauder , Merciless Executioner . They affect everyone equally (mostly). Symmetrical effects are aaaallllwwwwaaaayyyyssss fair. Other good ones include Vona's Hunger , Ruthless Disposal , and Tribute to Hunger .

Lastly, the payoffs. Not much to explain here, we've got Dictate of Erebos , Sangromancer , Zulaport Cutthroat , Blood Artist , and Grim Haruspex . They do what you want them to do, and that's what they do. Oh, and Gray Merchant of Asphodel . Can't forget Gary. Good ol' Gary.

Incremental Advantage.

Every good hug is firmly controlled by the initiator of the hug. So let's get some advantage, shall we?

Phyrexian Arena , Necropotence , Greed , Read the Bones , Night Dealings . With Seizan, everyone gets more cards. So let's get more cards than everyone else. Simple.

Or, maybe, remove some of the better cards they've been drawing? Thoughtseize 'll do that. So will the discard step.

Death and Destruction.

Toxic Deluge . Nevinyrral's Disk . Mutilate . Corrupt . Malicious Affliction . Dismember . Scour from Existence . Skinrender .

There's a lot more where that came from.
