Skull of Ramos Discussion

hydrothermia on Pattern Recognition #134 - Mercadian …

I may be one of the few that actually remember playing Mercadian Masque in the Type 2 (Standard for you whippersnappers.) format. My favorite card of the set, outside of Counterspell was Tidal Kraken . It was only a 6/6 unblockable for eight mana, which is way overpriced by today's current Standards. A little surprised you didn't mention Conspiracy the card. It was the first of it's kind with the most recent "reprint" being Arcane Adaptation . Or my favorite/annoying combo consisting of Cho-Manno, Revolutionary and Pariah .

There were five artifacts, one land and a handful of white rebels that created lore of a creature that would eventually end up being printed for Commander 2017, Ramos, Dragon Engine . The first iterations of the artifact dragon came from Henge of Ramos , Eye of Ramos , Heart of Ramos , Horn of Ramos , Skull of Ramos and Tooth of Ramos .

Daedalus19876;

  • You are correct in that Coalition Relic is better than Manalith - in the right deck. I have no methods of proliferate or tap-dance. As a result, I can not pile charge counters onto the Relic. Effectively, all I will ever get out of it at one time is a single mana of the color of my choice. This is the same value I get out of Manalith , for the exact same CMC. It's not that Relic is bad - it's that my deck is not designed to optimize it.

  • Heart of Ramos is an amazingly beautiful card. I run the Relics in a lot of decks. I actually run Eye of Ramos and Skull of Ramos in my Silumgar, the Drifting Death deck for that very reason. The reason I did not include it within this deck is simply because I don't have need for a lot of stones. The ones I do have seem fine enough. Sure, I could get 1x additional , but I don't think in this particular deck is worth the slot for the card for a one-time use. In other words, to me the value of +1 in addition to the normally produced is less valuable than a card that remains on the field.

  • I honestly overlooked Thran Dynamo . Totally forgot it. I think I should replace Gilded Lotus . The triple colorless is easy to overcome since I'm only using one color, and it works perfect for mana dedicated toward stones. It might not speed up my deck by a whole lot, but it will see some slight improvement. Also, it gives me another card to free-cast off of Sunbird's Invocation when I cast my limited number of 4-drop spells, such as Crucible of Fire and Thunderbreak Regent .

  • Ruination and Winter Orb are great locks on the game. I could very easily slip them into the deck. The reason I don't want to is merely because I'm not that kind of player. It's not a bad suggestion; It's that I don't feel comfortable sitting down with a group of people and basically telling them they can't play Magic. If I wanted to do that, I'd play mono-blue ;)

  • The reason I literally run zero Instant and / or Sorcery spells is because I needed to make room for all my Dragons! Haha, joking aside the reason I didn't go with these in this deck is because I specifically sought out Dragons and Enchantments that have Instant / Sorcery-like impacts on the game. The main theme of the deck is a Dragon deck, but I'd say the archetype is strictly burn with the massive amount of non-combat damage I can very easily and steadily spread around. Effectively, my Dragons act with secondary functions, which allows me to double my resource value while honing in on synergy.

  • I honestly have not considered Sneak Attack , Bacon God, or even Etali, Primal Storm . All three of these would be great additions. I'll have to see what I can safely cut. I already have cheating aspects with Sunbird's Invocation , so adding another one or two would really help tie that into the synergy as well, rather than having it as a one-off gimmick.

Thanks for your suggestions! I'll get looking at what I can slot in and where :D

This deck to sort of be my love-child. It's everything I love in Magic:

  • Dragons
  • Big-ass stupid plays
  • Ramp / Reduction
  • Tokens
  • Massive amounts of damage
  • Archenemy style gameplay
  • Giant boardstates
  • Evasion
  • And did I mention MOTHER F***ING DRAGONS?!

I'll admit, I fully intend on buying this deck and even pimping it out over time. So the suggestions really do help :D thanks!

Some more mana rocks can help get your general out a turn earlier. Commander's Sphere , Worn Powerstone , Fellwar Stone , Myriad Landscape , Darksteel Ingot , Bontu's Monument , Sol Ring , Mana Geode , Seer's Lantern , Orazca Relic , Magnifying Glass , and Skull of Ramos are decent options. Also you might like Wall of Blood . My friend plays it in his Gisa and it is explosive. Pay 20 life into it, sac it for zombies, and watch heads roll! Coat of Arms is great too if your budget allows.

A lot of good suggestions! Thank you!

Charcoal Diamond is already in my list, and I decided to shy away from Jet Medallion due to pricing reasons... but maybe not :D

Coldsteel Heart is a good one, definitely gonna add it, but Skull of Ramos has the same problem as Worn Powerstone : coming out turn 3 and generating 2 mana doesn't make it faster than generating 1 mana, since sidisi --> ad naus --> combo all take 1 turn each regardless :D

Rain of Filth actually does make the combo faster, since I can combo the turn I play ad naus then (main phase of course). Great suggestion ^^

I do actually own Chrome Mox , but considering I run 80 lands or so I wasn't sure if it was worth including or not... I guess I'll see what my final land count is before deciding

The problem with Cabal Stronghold is that I need 5 other basics to generate positive mana, and at that point I should already be comboing off or dying to counterspells

Terrain Generator is great, 0 damage from ad naus is amazing ^^

Imp's Mischief is also noted

There's a lot of great suggestions, now I just need to figure out my pain limit for ad naus... ^^

Charcoal Diamond and Jet Medallion are two that I can think of off the top of my head for black.

Coldsteel Heart Kinda acts like a second diamond. Skull of Ramos cheap rock to purchase and can get you 2 black mana in a pinch.

Dark Ritual and Cabal Ritual are sort of ramp.

Very risky, but Rain of Filth in case you absolutely need extra mana.

I doubt your looking into them since they are pricy but Chrome Mox and Mox Opal are zero drop

I'm thinking you'll want to maximize on artifacts that are sacrificed in order to reap great benefit.

If you want access to some great ramp for you deck, Tooth of Ramos and Heart of Ramos will allow you to get 2 mana from them. After they are sacrificed, if Gerrard dies you get them back for free. Now I'm not sure on the technicality / legality of it, but I believe Horn of Ramos , Skull of Ramos and Eye of Ramos can also be used in your deck. Their errata text contains the mana symbols, but the physical cards do not; They list the color by name, not by identification. So I believe they are legal in all decks, regardless of colors.

Probably a few I missed but there you go.

If you need help with knowing how much/what ramp to use, you might want to check out https://www.mtggoldfish.com/articles/brewer-s-minute-ramp-math

I am not an expert in mono, but for you I recommend adding:

Mana Crypt pricey but spicey

Charcoal Diamond goes so well with Sol Ring

Everflowing Chalice and Astral Cornucopia - especially if you somehow get more proliferate

Extraplanar Lens

Ashnod's Altar and Phyrexian Altar are good if you want double-down on sacrificing your own creatures.

Myriad Landscape can go in almost any edh deck

Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx is solid in any one- or two-colour deck

Lake of the Dead has a downside, but you won't care when you're using it (trust me)

Deserted Temple , Vesuva , Candelabra of Tawnos and Thespian's Stage to double-down on Cabal Coffers.

Petrified Field to protect valuable lands.

Expedition Map and/or Wayfarer's Bauble to tutor itfor all your powerful lands.

I'm not sure how I feel about Temple of the False God , but it is an EDH classic.

Other mono ramp

I ended up finding so many mono ramp cards I thought I might as well make a more full list.

Solemn Simulacrum is a good catch-all

Magus of the Coffers is slow, but might be worth it. Crypt Ghast is a better version.

Pawn of Ulamog and Sifter of Skulls are good in any deck that sacrifices often

Nirkana Revenant is good in the right deck

Bog Witch is kind of weird, but has fringe uses

I haven't thought hard, but you might be able to do some flicker shenanigans with Priest of Gix

Priest of Yawgmoth and Soldevi Adnate work if you hate your own stuff

Leaden Myr , Hedron Crawler , Manakin , Scuttlemutt , Alloy Myr , Opaline Unicorn , Palladium Myr are usually worse than rocks, but maybe you want?

Worst case, an edh deck can always load up on rocks. These are some of the best ones for mono black

Sol Ring every edh deck should include this

Star Compass , Fellwar Stone , Fractured Powerstone , Mind Stone all fill similar voids

Thran Dynamo , Ur-Golem's Eye , Worn Powerstone , Gilded Lotus , Hedron Archive , Sisay's Ring

Pillar of Origins for tribal decks

Consider Pentad Prism , Kyren Toy , or Coalition Relic for proliferate

In most games, these do the same thing: Commander's Sphere , Cryptolith Fragment  Flip, Cultivator's Caravan , Darksteel Ingot , Hierophant's Chalice , Honor-Worn Shaku , Mana Prism , Manalith , Orazca Relic , Phyrexian Totem , Powerstone Shard , Pristine Talisman , Seer's Lantern , Serum Powder , Skull of Ramos , Sol Grail , Spectral Searchlight , Vessel of Endless Rest , Victory Chimes , and Chromatic Lantern

Thought Vessel if you fill your hand

Chrome Mox is usually worth the card disadvantage

Lotus Bloom , Mana Vault , Basalt Monolith , Grim Monolith , and Lotus Petal for explosive potential

Mox Amber if you usually have your commander/a legendary thing out

Mox Diamond if lands in your graveyard is a good thing

Mox Opal if you have 2+ extra artifacts

Black Market is good if you tend to sacrifice/kill a lot of creatures

Caged Sun , Doubling Cube , and Gauntlet of Power are fair if you want to reach that high mana

Liliana of the Dark Realms is nice with proliferate, and makes sure you don't miss land drops in the mid/late-game

Sword of the Animist is best with one-mana creatures, and if you attack often, but might be justified even if not

Jet Medallion and Heartless Summoning do a lot of work if you play many cards in a turn

Carnival of Souls is fun with some creature-based combos

These mostly work for combo/explosive turns

Bubbling Muck for explosive/combo turns

Dark Ritual for getting a turn 2 Crypt Ghast , etc.

Sacrifice and Culling the Weak for sacrificing. They go nicely with Songs of the Damned

Spoils of Evil for lategame combos

Rain of Filth must be used with caution

Crypt of Agadeem works, but only if you consistently have 4+ creatures in the graveyard

Phyrexian Tower eats your creatures

Cabal Coffers is a staple

It's porbably unnessecary, but if you end up with few basic swamps, consider Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth to supplement your Cabal Coffers .

Cabal Stronghold is great if you can't afford many nonbasics, and might be good enough besides.
