Around the year 1050 of the Third Age, 'the shadow of Dol Guldur' fell upon it, and men began to call it the forest of great fear. The shadow was the power of Sauron.

The presence of Sauron's power drove the Elves northward, and by the end of the Third Age they were a diminished race who had entrenched themselves in Mountains of Mirkwood.
