Got me a foil Giada finally! It was a lot cheaper than I expected, too. :-)

Also, took out Subjugator Angel for an Emeria Shepherd.

CommandFest 2025 - Mainz, Germany

Mortlocke, 2 months ago

Hey all,

Not sure how many of you are out in Germany, but I made it to the December 2025 CommandFest out at Mainz. It was a wonderful experience, met some very nice people and had some great games. I met some legendary artists as well, specifically Jeff Laubenstein and RK Post. I showed Jeff my deckbox and he absolutely loved it, so much so that he made the horrible mistake of getting too close and was eaten:

enter image description here

But not before I asked him to do some alters! I don't run any cards with his art, so instead I asked him to alter some different cards that I run in the deck (I need someone's opinion here, is it weird to ask an artist to replace the art on a card that wasn't theirs?) - specifically Elemental Bond and Smothering Tithe. I asked him to "Draw dinosaurs doing dinosaur stuff", and he presented me with these lovelies (also, the thought vessel was obviously done by RK Post, he had the booth right next door):

Lorwyn

IQuarent, 2 months ago

Had my eye on a few cards from the newest Lorwyn set for this deck, namely Chomping Changeling over Reclamation Sage, as well as Selfless Safewright and perhaps Firdoch Core if I can make room for it.

A little update. Cards cut are in the sideboard and cards added are in the maybeboard (until they happen to my physical deck). I'd like to find a spot for The Walls of Ba Sing Se, Phyrexian Processor and something that gives haste. I'll see how it goes for awhile.

Minor changes

Reuben_Medik, 2 months ago

I've put two new cards into the deck

Undercover Operative is a source of copies, and it adds an Shield token. Pretty alright, but Chameleon, Master of Disguise is better. It costs less AND it gets around the Legendary rule, so I can target Krothus with it even without things like Sakashima of a Thousand Faces or MirrorBox on the field

Tidal Kraken is a high cost 6/6 unblockable. It does it's job, one of them being saced so I can transform Runo. But I have plenty of other cards that can do the same. So I replaced it with Spinal Embrace. Wit hit, I can steal a creature, and if I understand the rules of comabt properly, I can copy that creature using Krothus or some other source before I actually attack. Even if not, it is a way to get something big off the board and potentially into an enemies face, so that could be fun

Some new cards from new and new-ish sets

Reuben_Medik, 2 months ago

Since I've been getting back into Magic I thought I might as well buy some packs for some recent-ish sets, including Spiderman. I also attended the Lorewyn Prerelease yesterday, so I got some nice Elementals. I'm not entirely sure about most of those new cards, but I know I got a really good one

Grove Rumbler is a decent creature. A 3/3 trample, with Landfall that gives it +2/+2 until end of turn. As I can get a lot of land out in a turn, this guy can do a lot of damage. However, Sandman, Shifting Scoundrel is a 3 drop that has power / toughness equal to the number of lands I control. It can also return from the graveyard to the battlefield with a land if I pay 3GG. If Ashaya, Soul of the Wild is on the field, Sandman will get a HUGE boost, something Grove Rumbler wouldn't get if those other creatures were later summoned

I always felt Parcelbeast was a strange card, probably due to its Mutate ability. It allows me to look at the top card of my library. If it were a land, I could put it on the battlefield tapped, otherwise it was basically draw. It is pretty good when played alongsdide other cards in this deck, like Omnath, Locus of Rage and can help me with a combo on many things. But I decided that a heavy hitter like Diamond Weapon should be somewhere in this deck and I couldn't think of anywhere else. Its a 9 drop that costs 1 less for each permanent in my graveyard, with 8/8, Reach, and it ignores combat damage. I suppose I should try and put Pacelbeast back in somewhere, but I just don't know what to remove for it. Maybe Bloom Hulk? I don't think I have any other sources of Proliferate, and although that would help me with Simic Ascendancy, that isn't a win con that stays around long to begin with

Scampering Scorcher would get me some Hasted tokens on the field. Pretty alright, I guess but I think Molten Man, Inferno Incarnate would better serve me. Although his Power / Toughness is both 0, he gets +1/+1 for each Mountain I control, and I get to search my library for a mountain when he comes into play. Not as powerful an effect as Sandmans, but he could still become a 10/10

Wavesifter is a 5 drop that, when it enters, lets me investigate twice. A pretty decent source of card draw, considering I can evoke it for GU. But Wistfulness has it beat. Similar CMC, though it doesn't Investigate. Instead it can act as Artifact / Enchantment removal and / or a source of card draw depending on the colours of mana you spend to cast it. It's also a stronger creature, though it does lack flying

Lastly, I removed Boreal Elemental. It might have flying, but I do have a few sources of flying and reach, and ways to get Flying on all of my tokens. If things are going well, I will be making a whole lotta tokens. But a problem I keep coming across is how few cards are left in my library after a really good turn. Living Conundrum solves this issue by ignoring my draw step if I have no cards in my library. It has hexproof, and if I have Thryx out it can't be countered

Finally got around to updating this

Reuben_Medik, 2 months ago

I finally got around to updating this deck with those Phyrexia, All Will be One cards. I also attended a Lorwyn Eclipsed prerelease today, and I managed to get some other nice cards, one of which I added here...

Firstly, I removed Vampire of the Dire Moon. A 1/1 Deathtouch Lifelink that costs B. An alright 1 drop, but Dawnhand Dissident is better. It can tap to Blight, meaning I can use it alongside Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons to make my deathtouch snake tokens

Generous Patron was removed next. A 3 drop that has support 2, but the main part of it was the fact I drew a card every time I put a counter on something I didn't own. I exchanged it for Ichorspit Basilisk, which may have been a mistake. Same CMC, one less toughness, but it does have Deathtouch and Toxic 1. Since I'm somewhat focusing more on Poison Counters, I thought I might as well try it out

Up next to be removed is Tenacious Hunter. If it has a -1/-1 counter, it has Deathtouch and vigilance, but at that point it'd only be a 3/3. But Gulping Scraptrap proliferates both when it enters and dies. Even if I haven't given out any Poison Counters yet, that is still two more sources of Proliferation for things like Hapatra, Blowfly Infestation and Nest of Scarabs

I also removed Harmonize. A 4 drop that gave me three cards, it's honestly pretty good. But Infectious Inquiry seems more in line with what I am trying to do. Costing slightly less mana but also 2 life, it gives me 2 cards AND gives Poison counters to each opponent. I already have some more Poison sources in here, but I also have some new Proliferations, so I think that makes up for the extra cards Harmonize would have given me

Finally, at some point I looked at my land and thought 'I don't need THAT many swamps' so I took one out and put in Razaketh's Rite. Not a new card by any definition, but it is basically a higher CMC Demonic Tutor with Cycling B. Even with all these new additions, which mostly have the same CMC as what they replaced, I'm fairly certain my mana base won't be too heavily impacted

Weekly pauper 1:1:1

tobi89, 2 months ago

Ok, I did not get the rainbow lands I wanted, so I played with the same list as before, just with one more Crumbling Vestige instead of one Tinder Farm.

1st match vs Pili-pala combo 1:1
I won the first game by storming off. But after sideboard we both had slow hands and he played 3(!) Drawn in Sorrow. He killed off his Pili-Palas when paying those. He had some Writhing Chrysalises and Eldrazi Repurposer afterwards, which would be manageable if I didn't mill both of my Rites of Initiation with one Winding Way. There wasn't time for game 3.

2nd match vs Elves 2:1
This was an excellent match. We both go wide, draw shitton of cards, do not have much interaction and kill by combat dmg. Both are boards were stacked and my draw elves and shapeshifters was helpeding my opponent with mana and pumping.
First two games was just about who assamble the critical hit first. The third game however was nerve wrecking.
Oponent assambled his mana producing line and passed the turn. I played the Standard Bearer by sacrificing some one mana beast to Metamorphosis and that put a massive dent in his strategy. He managed to play some 19/20 hydras anyway, and I was able to storm off just in time with 1 life left :D.

3rd match VS Mono U Terror: 1:2
I won the first game when I stormed after he put some snakes on the board. In the second game he started with Delver of Secrets followed by another two in the second round. He flipped them and countered two of my draw elves. I did not have a chance. I also found out I sided in two Standard Bearers by mistake. Along with 2 Weather the Storm and one Moment's Peace *list*. I forgot to take them out even for the game 3. That game wasn't as quick, I had to mull to 6, keeping one draw elf, which he countered and I did not draw another one before he run me over with his army of snakes.

Overall not a bad game night. I think that more rainbow lands and Spell Pierce in side would be really good against terror and also VS Pili-Pala. As it counters countermagic, board wipes and combo pieces. And although the Tinder Farms are arguably better in the storm turn I had no problems when I get to storming of. But being able to get to the storming of is the big deal, which I think the rainbow lands do better.

A few more changes

OUT: Plains, Fabricatefoil, Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite

IN: Storm of Souls, Curiosity Crafter, Junk Winder

Trying to bring down my curve a little with Junk Winder (since affinity for tokens should help if my deck is doing well). Then, I need some more draw and or recursion for when things aren't going well.

6 Cards?

DreadKhan, 2 months ago

So, when I get around to it probably moving in Etali (for Legacy Weapon, Etali is a very good win con and better generic card, Weapon is a fine enough payoff for infinite WUBRG, but it's pure agony to draw into), Mount Doom (for Maralen, I still love the idea of the combo but I CONSTANTLY draw her and never see hide nor hair of Oppo, the one I can't dig out easily), Deadpool (for Yorion, this is a better combo piece that also removes stuff), Vanishing Verse (for Oppo, since if I bother to pull Maralen it's very hard to justify Oppo, and Verse will answer an opponent's Drannith or Oppo, either of which costs me the game generally), Reaver Cleaver (for Smothering Tithe, Tithe feels clunky and slow, this is also a tutor target that gives TRAMPLE, weirdly useful separate from the treasures), and Swan Song (for something else I was thinking of pulling). Edit: If I have Ioreth, Marvin and Haste my Garth can deck one opponent, Marvin can deck another, and if I tutor up a Sakashima I can deck out two others (Marvin sees a copy of Marvin's ability and gains it... assuming I'm getting this interaction correct), meaning I can actually use a Braingeyser if I actually want to, and at Instant speed, that seems like it'd be situationally useful sometimes? Ioreth, Sakashima and Marvin is also infinite untaps for Mount Doom, but it's going to be sweet having more than one way to do things, especially as people get more frightened of this deck's consistency. FWIW Garth and Emiel only needs Kinnan and Haste and I not only have infinite mana, I'd have the infinite mana payoff in Garth since Emiel can reset his spell book, that's only worse than Selvala because it doesn't have Selvala, but sometimes you need to make up for lost pieces. He's probably more important than Etali for winning on the spot, but he's often situationally worth casting, either for his spell book, the body, or his colours; I often benefit from more than one, so Garth almost never feels like a dead card. This means I could very well play him early and give people chances to kill him before I assemble a combo, which would suck, but the deck has backup plans that are also able to win games, be they Kudo and Norn or Legacy Weapon wiping out all of their permanents before I stomp them to death in some fashion (Garth's Shivan Dragon is actually useful in here as a finisher since the deck can easily have infinite mana and runs true haste sources). I'm just saying I'm pretty shocked we don't see more people on Garth, especially since most people are already on most of the stuff that you'd need to make him work. Edit: Switching out Painful Truths and Tithe for The Reaver Cleaver and Swan Song. Cleaver can give treasures right away, possibly enough to go off that turn if I have a high power creature on board, and Swan Song is just a good card. Truths is a good card in Bracket 3, but it starts to feel really tedious in Bracket 4, and it's stone unplayable in Bracket 5, while Tithe had terrible play patterns, often resulting in me being in a scenario where I both need to cast Sisay AND cast Tithe, or that Tithe is effectively dead because it I don't only need treasures (and it can't be fetched, so finally I wanted another Red Legend to work with).

IN: Mindspring Merfolk

OUT: Xolatoyac, the Smiling Flood

I don't really know what they were thinking with the "alt commander" of this deck. One of the first things that should be cut tbh.

Mindspring Merfolk seems tailor-made to go in here. In it goes.
