Magic Game Day

jmckee85, 13 years ago

Took it to a small magic game day at the comic book shop and went 3-1 and took 2nd.

Match 1 vs. Werewolves went (2-1) 1st match I got Vault of the Archangel out and beatdown with all my tokens gainin tons of life and killin his wolves pretty easily 2nd match he got a real aggro start with Reckless Waif  Flip, full moons rise, Daybreak Ranger  Flip and Instigator Gang  Flip with Devil's Play removal and attacked with a Moonmist 3rd match both mulligan to 4 and was able to get the aggro start faster and won

Match 2 vs. WUB control with superfriends went (2-1) 1st match I aggro'd him out with virtues, and tons of tokens 2nd match he board wiped twice with Day of Judgment and then got card advatange with Think Twice/Forbidden Alchemy and I top decked lands 3rd match I sb in Nevermore and Nevermore his Day of Judgment and won easily

Match 3 vs. the jon Finkel WUb delver spirits went (2-0) 1st match got too many tokens with Vault of the Archangel 2nd match was pretty much same as first

Match 4 vs. Wolf-Run Ramp GBr went (0-2) Match 1 got aggro start took him down to 6 then board wiped 3 times with Black Sun's Zenith and Kessig Wolf Run for tons of poison with Inkmoth Nexus. Match 2 was pretty much the same as match 1 except I Nevermore his Black Sun's Zenith and he used Beast Within followed by more Black Sun's Zenith's and he Inkmoth Nexus for the win again.

Overall it does really well against the delver, stony silence works really great against ratchet bomb board wipe. Need more of an answer probably for multiple board wipe via Black Sun's Zenith/Slagstorm. Usually can survive one-two board wipes and still get a W like I ended up doing with werewolves however beyond thaat it's too hard to get board presence and Nevermore easily gets eaten up by Beast Within/Acidic Slime. Maybe Despise/Surgical Extraction might be a better way of getting rid of them so they don't just keep cycling in the deck but that's just too much chance on the combo, but once scars rotates out it should be a top contender.

Sideboard Changes

Nageri, 13 years ago

I realized that the toughest matchup for this deck is a straight control deck or something that doesn't run creatures. So for the sideboard I put in some cards that can help with that.

prelimenary changes

mantisman, 13 years ago

sidedborded the cloudthreshers' and the singleton creeping corrosion in favour of acidic slimes as they have the ability to deal with inkmoth nexus (and other problem lands) as well as artifacts and enchantments. swapped out leatherback baloths' for predator oozes' for increased durability while keeping 3 green symbols.

FNMx2

Played at FNM and gameday (post changes) and it did fairly well. Nobody really expects it. Major problems for the deck are surgical extraction and nihil spellbomb. Grafdigger isnt bad because it is easily countered. But it makes me want to run 4x mental misstep in the sideboard. Anyway the 1of sword of body and mind has been amazing. throw it on a bird or a spirit and it becomes a major threat from mill alone. balefire gets blocked a lot so i thought i would add kessig wolf run. It would get in some extra damage. Several other misc changes. Melira and platinum emperion screw over wolf run like nobody's business. Making their inkmoth and titans basically useless.

Game Day

3-2

Alright! I played this deck at game day and made it to the top eight. Through a course of bad sideboard choices and unfortunate dice rolls, I did not make it far.

My first match was a by. She didn't show up, so I got in scotch free. Whew!

My second match: Tempered Steel

Talk about hard! The matches literally came down to who went first. He won the dice roll and played a Vault Skirge. I followed with a Doomed Traveler and passed. He dropped a Memnite, followed it with another Vault Skirge, and attacked. No big deal.
I drew a Gather the Townsfolk, played it, attacked, and passed turn.
He played a Tempered Steel and I conceded. To the sideboard!
+2 Leonin Relic-Warder
+1 Dismember
-2 Thalia, Guardian of Thraben
-1 Doomed Traveler

This time I was on the play. Talk about the perfect hand! First turn I dropped Champion of the Parish and passed turn.
He made the aggressive Mox Opal, glinthawk, replay the Mox Opal, and passed.
I drew, dropped Gather the Townsfolk, swung in, and passed turn.
He attack with his bird, then played (that blue guy who changes targets) and passed.
I played Honor of the Pure, attacked, dropped Doomed Traveler and passed.
He drew, looked at the board in dismay, and moved on to round three.

He was on the play, and it was not pretty. I kept a hand with only three-drops, who were removed by Oblivion Rings. He killed me with his glinthawk idols. Darn!

Game five: Red/Green ramp

This one is a little more embarrassing. First game was amazing as all he did was draw two land and play Rampant Growth. I played multiple Honor of the Pures and Hero of Bladeholds. The game was over in the blink of an eye.

Sideboard:
+3 Grand Abolisher
-2 Gideon's Lawkeeper
-1 Doomed Traveler

What was I thinking?!
I fell easily to his Primeval Titan as he Combusted every single one of my dudes. It was horrible.

Next game was just as bad. I sat there with an Honor of the Pure enhanced Doomed Traveler poking him for two while he infected me slowly with two Inkmoth Nexuses. I stuck out my hand when he played Kessig Wolf Run and left the tournament with my head held high.

Summary

I think the loss at the end came down to a horrible sideboard choice. Aww well. I plan to take this to FNM even more now and get opinions on this deck!

a few changes

This is one of my first decks. Please let me know if you have any changes in mind. I am hoping to start playing more in a tournament setting instead of just around the kitchen table.

Update to the curve

swamp_water, 13 years ago

Seems that the deck is counting Mana symbols now and not colored cards. Thanks for fixing this!

Update #9

The Messian, 13 years ago

Cut the Etched Champion completely. Awesome card but it couldn't be used with the Grand Arcitect if Metelcraft was in effect. As it is now with 1 artifact creature in play and the Arcitect I can cast a Wurmcoill Engine on the fourth turn with only 3 lands on the board. Much faster now!

Update #2

The Messian, 13 years ago

Replaced the Geist Honored Monks with Elspeth Tirel. The Monk with good in this deck, but would only create tokens once. She would also get very big but would have trouble getting the damage through. Tirel will give me some late game options to win the game.

Liquimetal Coating - El mazo esta bien equipado para destruir artefactos una y otra vez, y gracias a esta carta, podemos destruir técnicamente cualquier permanente. Utilizar Naturalize para destruir tierras? Si es posible!

The Deck's First FNM

dorminjake, 13 years ago

We had 43 players at FNM two nights ago, and I made half a dozen people laugh out loud. Two of them laughed in painful spasms, and alternated telling me they thought I was awesome and they hated me so much. My round 4 and 5 opponents both knew what I was playing by the time I got to them, and were partly excited, partly dreading the matchup. The guy who runs the FNM asked to see my deck and shook his head the entire time, especially at the Blasphemous Acts.

Even though I only went 3-2, I'd say the night was a success, haha.

If you want to know how Game Day went, I wrote up a better version of the text that used to be here in this article.

Went 3-2 at FNM. Was coming really close to 4-1. Round 1. Some sort of Token Deck with Sorin. 0-2(Both times got to 9 infect. Round 2: Some sort of white deck with tokens 1-2 Round 3: White Aggro + Token 2-0(He quit second round because I pulled Pro White) Round 4: Blue Control 2-0 Should have lost second game but he made mistake. Round 5: Myr Artifact Deck 2-1(Scooped first game to sideboard artifact hate). 25 Players

Very expensive deck to make! Had to buy many pieces and do a lot of trades! Took about 7 days, 70 Packs, and about $400 to get everything needed. Still missing one Hero and one Honour of the Pure. The search continues...

gameday

5-1 @ gameday 10-4

Round 1: Superfriends: i totally lost this match-up due to being mana screwed both games. I mulliganed both games and was still screwed...it happens to everybody though 0-2

Round 2: Black/green reanimator: swarmed through both games withoutmuch difficulity...not much else to say. 2-2

Round 3: Zombies: top tier aggro build...total net deck...i out paced it games 1 and 3...good match that was won at the dice roll. 4-3

Round 4: RDW: my sorin dropped right when it needed to...so my vampires ran in with Sword of War and Peace…game 2 was much the same. 6-3

Round 5: Esper control: swarmed out spirits first game with 2 Intangible Virtue and the beats got there...game 2 he got mana flooded and once again lingering spirits was the MVP 8-3

Round 6: Mage blade: i won the first game with a well times Elspeth Tirel...game 2 i just got steamrolled by 2 delver of secrets...game three was well fought but in the end i got there with spirits. 10-4

Overall game day was fun and the deck did superbly...

Swapped Rocc Egg for Increasing Devotion, and added Mortrapod. Thanks for the great input!

Update #8

The Messian, 13 years ago

Removed a Tempered Steel, Etched Champion, and a Legionaire. They have been replaced with Grand Architect, this was done in order to speed up the deck some. With a Architect in play and one other artifact I can cast a Wurmcoil Engine on the fourth turn. It will also help bring out some smaller creatures and allow me to keep my mana open for counters.

Field tested

admon, 13 years ago

I went to a Magic Game day event today, and managed to go 4-0 with this deck -2 Koth of the Hammerfoil +1 Mountain Grim Lavamancer. Admittedly, I had favorable matchups/draws, but it seemed to perform very well. The first 3 matches I won with very quick 2-0's, and the final match up I won 2-1 against a tezzeret shenanigans deck. I won a sorin as the 1st place prize, and used that to get the 2 koths (along with edh fodder)

Any further advice on improving it?

Tragic Slip y Go for the Throat - Elimina las criaturas del contrario, y gracias a Snapcaster Mage probablemente las podrás utilizar más de una vez.

Draw 2 cards... or more!

kikeiros, 13 years ago

Think Twice - Realmente es una carta de relleno pero, cuando la usas, robas una carta, y cuando la usas desde el cementerio robas una segunda carta, que puede ser tremendo si dispones de 1 o mas Secrets of the Dead en juego.
