Top Decking

swamp_water, 13 years ago

I've been playing this deck daily at lunch with my collegues at work and it has been very successful. Things it has going for it

1) No tokens so people expecting token heavy spirit deck are duped. 2) Control, Control, Control and Hexproof! yeah B-R-U-T-A-L! 3) Evasion up the ying yang!

Things to watch out for;

1) Copying Drogskol Captain with a Phantasmal Image and then having faitful hour and playing Faith's Shield is not recommended because then the Drogskol Captain / Phantasmal Image power house is weakened 2) In certain race conditions (like green creatures with bloodthirst... shiver) it's weak. Not sure what to do about this yet. Maybe some more Mind Conrol effects.

Things to improve;

1) it needs more draw so I'm flirting with some Ponders or even icor wellspring with Venser, the Sojournerfoil.

Doom Bladed

Agbu, 13 years ago

I switched out my Assassinates and Undying Evils in my mainboard for Doom Blades. I can pull the Assassinates back from my sideboard if I'm facing another black deck.

Out with the Metamorphs, in with the Skites

TehPlutoKiss, 13 years ago

Yeah, Phyrexian Metamorph doesn't do enough in this deck. It's only really good if I have a Golem out and then I should win anyways. Replaced it with a playset of Spellskite to see how effective it is.

slayerslate, 13 years ago

Added Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas to see if he'd fit. He seems like he'd be a good late game search for a Wurmcoil Engine of Myr Superion and a good win condition with his ultimate. Wasn't sure what to take out though, figured I'd take out three other search engines, thought about cutting the leaks though.

-2x Treasure Mage
+2x Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas

White wins with humans (comments appreciated)

Evolving Wilds and Dark Ascension

keneke01, 13 years ago

Do you think Evolving Wilds should have a place in this deck?

Dark Ascension, I feel like I am not really using any dark ascension cards and I'm trying to decide if that is a good or bad thing.

Thanks for any help!

This deck was dismantled. I'll post the new version later.

Changes

Contrast, 13 years ago

Made some important changes. Solemn Simulacrum was a necessity and works well with the DOJ as well. I added more land removoal/psuedo removal with Ghost Quarters in the deck and 2 in the board. Also bumped up the artifact removal to help with Inkmoth. Thanks to those that sent their support!

Alt. Strategy

Karngolem, 13 years ago

Wanted to play with the 12 land Cloudpost, Glimmerpost, Vesuva combo, Expedition Map works for bringing out a cloudpost quickly. Lodestone golems work beautifully. Everflowing Chalice is for use on opposing turns with Vedalken Orrery and Unwinding Clock. - Has the potential for you to be able to draw (Temple Bell) and play cards on opposing turns while limiting what your opponent can cast with the Lodestone golems/Lux cannons. Very nasty control deck. Features: - Colourless - No instants/sorceries (Personal preference of mine, I'd rather my opponent see everything coming before he gets clobbered) - No basic land

Speeding Up

Minousmancer says...

Nephalia Drownyard is so slow, as is Jace, Memory Adept, you might look at this deck: Maniacal-Fortress for some ideas to speed up your 'Mill' strategy.

Dodge99X says...

I don't think they're necessarily slow. They just take a while to get going well. At least Jace, Memory Adept can hammer for 10 immediately. I don't see any reason to remove Nephalia Drownyard unless the mana curve is too screwed up. Jace, Memory Adept has been my most effective milling tool in the deck when combo'd with Increasing Confusion. However, I took a look at your deck. It seems you view Jace's Erasure and Curse of the Bloody Tome as effective ways to mill. I had those in originally. I won't use Curse of the Bloody Tome because of the mana cost. I can't afford another 3 drop that is only gonna mill 2. So I'm opting for Jace's Archivist so I can get through my deck faster and mill them with a Jace's Erasure combo.

Result

Going to try Jace's Erasure combo'd with Jace's Archivist for a faster mill strategy.

Round 1 vs. Kessig Wolf Run. Oops! Huntmaster of the Fells made no significant impact on this game. I kept getting Sword of Body and Mind, which milled out significant cards. Wolf Run has no idea how to deal with Phyrexian Obliterator, because the creature doesn't want to blocked and you can't hit it with something like Devil's Play either. Despite everyone (and I mean everyone) telling me not to go infect and regular damage together, Phyrexian Crusader just laughed at everything I was attacked by. Acidic Slime and Strangleroot Geist don't really do anything because of first strike. I sat behind the Crusaders and swung. I won 2-1. Round 2 vs. Township Tokens. I played an aggro token deck. I was able to force my opponent to a round 3 matchup, but couldn't do anything beyond that. I hit Surgical Extraction on turn 2 after a Mana Leak came out for my Child of Night, which in this matchup is really good. The extra lifegain lets you hang around a bit. I waited on a Black Sun's Zenith but kept drawing lands. That's how it goes sometimes. Round 3 vs. White Weenie. Champion of the Parish, Mirran Crusader. Kind of dangerous cards. As before, Child of Night came through for me, especially when I had two transformed Bloodline Keepers pumping all my vampires. I suddenly swung for a boatload of damage out of nowhere. Mirran Crusader might be my deck's archnemesis, but he kept swinging, I was able to gain the life back. Perhaps if he'd stayed home to block, the game would have been different. I won 2-0. Round 4 vs. U/B Mill Control. I won game one, lost game two and drew game three as time expired. Mill still remains the deck's bugaboo, and if my opponent has a robust creature control suite, there isn't much I can do about it. I thought there might have been times where Sheoldred, Whispering One might be useful but ultimately I decided on Molten-Tail Masticore as a sideboard card for this matchup (as a one-of). If cards are going to be put in my graveyard on purpose, I might as well make use out of them. I finished 7th in the event going 2-1-1. After tonight, the deck's sideboard changes look like this: -2 Hex Parasite +1 Black Sun's Zenith +1 Molten-Tail Masticore

so I don't wanna say I completely changed the deck but... I kind of did. haha much better now I think

Dropped Red, added Black

Ursus, 13 years ago

Most recent update. Decided to add False Cure to the deck, rounding out a black base. I dropped red spells in order to allow for more flexibility. Flows relatively well, and can apply pressure, especially when there is more than one predator. Furthermore, Tainted Strike reduces the likelihood that I'll be stuck swinging against a mountain of life that I helped create.

Clearing old comments now.

I've been testing it against a Wolf Run Ramp deck my friend has which made me start thinking about the sideboard. Did a little bit of reading and updated the sideboard...
