Birthing Pod was removed, mostly just because it rarely saw play. I loved it, it worked, but after seeing the Baltimore GP results, I was close but found more effective measures.

First impressions

Played against an U/R Delver, an U/W Delver Control and an U/R Burning Vengeance. Against U/R Delver the guy didn't found a blue source until late on game 1, and I destroyed immediatly with an Acidic Slime... Game 2 Massacre Wurmfoil stole the game. Against U/W delver he couldn't keep with my pace, bombing threats almost every turn. U/R burning was a really tough match, not sure if i played wrong or if it's a really bad match, because i have naturalize, sylvok replica and slime to deal with enchantments... won the match 2-1 but i would have lost in 50, 60% of the time. fourth round ID, first game of top 8 against a jund pod, if i'm not mistaken... wasn't able to do anything, got rolled over, 2-0 for him...

I enjoyed the deck, but i prefer the UB version... really need some bombs on that build, but i'm not sure what bombs and what to remove from the deck...

Game Day Results

CrushU, 13 years ago

12-man Game Day, went 3-1 to get into Top 4, then split first/second place.

2-1 Against Heartless Summoning deck. Second game he had a nuts draw and had two Superions out turn 2. Volition Reins was invaluable in this matchup. He would play a creature for cheap... And I'd steal it. Blasphemous Act was runner-up Awesome Card.

0-2 Against Bant Pod. First game I just got stomped by undying combined with Sun Titan/Image. Second game I made it much better by spellbombing his graveyard when he tried more Sun Titan shenanigans, but ultimately couldn't seal the deal. Highlight of the match was Consecrated Sphinx... vs his two Images of Sphinxes. INFINITE DRAW. Almost convinced him to mill himself.

2-0 Against homebrew aggro vampires... It ... looked like it was built for Pauper? Saw no rares. And I milled him.

2-0 Against Parallel Townships. I'd loaned the deck to someone that wanted to play and didn't have a deck of their own. Curse of Death's Hold shuts down tokens.

Top4: 2-1 Against B/G Infect. First game I got stomped by multiple Mutagenic Growths on a single creature. Second and third games I shenanigans'd my way out of death with Doom Blade and Go for the Throat. I noted that this was the only matchup I actually didn't side out Tragic Slip in, just because I really needed those kill spells...

Then I split with the Bant Pod deck.

After-Tournament Thoughts: I need some way to counteract Pod. Specifically, Undying. Someone mentioned Mimic Vat with Snapcaster Mage, and then I realized that it stops Undying shenanigans, too. I'm not quite sure what I would take out for it, though. Everything else in the deck worked quite well. Desperate Ravings only really screwed me once, making me discard a just-drawn Volition Reins, so it gets to stay in. Still really unhappy with Tragic Slip, there's nothing I want to kill with it. I noticed that I could replace it with Dismember and have a better time, so I've done that...

Solemn Simulacrum feature for Vampire Magic

Duromax, 13 years ago

Played my deck against a lot of other decks, and I manage to win most of my games.

Theres one deck that I almost always lose against.

This. ----> Final Green Coundown

Right there.

If anyone has advice on how to modify my sidedeck to actually be able to do something against that kind of deck, it would be appreciated. The best way I can quickly do something is by being lucky and having gut shots at turn 1-3 to eliminate the elves and the birds. Other than that, at turn 3, the opponent can already cast Dungrove Elder with no fear at all. Then, it's Thrun, Garruk, and I'm done.

Thanks !

Gamesday Dark Ascension

djgunn, 13 years ago

Went to Gamesday on Saturday with this (2/27/2012, for you time travelers out there).

Placed 5th, got my sweet promo Zombie Apocalypse that I'm never going to use!

Round 1, vs White Weenie Loss, Win, Loss, Final Record: 1-2 It was a really good match up, both of us constantly finding answers for each other. The guy I played in this match up was the one who ended up placing 1st.

Round 2, vs Blue/Black Control Loss, Win, Tie, Final Record: 1-1-1 Again, really good match up, we ended up going to time in the final round. It literally came down to use both being hand out, and one of us trying to come up with an answer first. Great game.

Round 3, vs... I'm not really sure. Win, Win, Final Record: 2-0 I played against one of the younger kids that's always down at the shop, and I'm not really sure what his deck was supposed to be doing. In our first game, it looks like it was going to be a curse deck, with him hitting me with Curse of the Pierced Heart, Curse of Exhaustion and Curse of Thirst. Game two, he looked like he was playing aggro Vampires in a black/white/red shell, and I never saw a single curse. I also had my "play of day" during this match up when I had out Sorin, Lord of Innistrad with 2 loyalty counters, 1 of his emblems, 2 of his Vampire tokens and a Mirran Crusader. I popped Sorin for a 2 emblem, played another Sorin, Lord of Innistrad and made a third emblem, and swung for 18 for the win. Poor kid.

Round 4, vs Black/Green Pod Win, Loss, Win, Final Record: 2-1 Really fun guy to play against. I've been toying around with a Black/Green pod strategy recently, so I was excited that some one else was doing it so I could garner some insight. I also think after the match up, he's building it into a much stronger deck. The bane of his deck really came down to me seeing just about all of my Mirran Crusaders every single match. Up to this point, I only ever saw a maximum of 1 of my Crusaders in every game. Every game I played against him, I ended up seeing at least 2 of them. It was like they could feel the black/green on the other side of board and showed up to help me out.

Round 5, vs Red/Blue Counterburn Loss, Win, Win, Final Record: 2-1 Also, a very good match up. Also one of the decks I sideboarded the heaviest against. I had lots of trouble getting spells to stick against him, and his Negates worked wonders on me. Nevermore really saved the day here for me, making sure that all of his end game strategy -- Inferno Titan and Frost Titan -- never saw the battlefield. The majority of of his board wipe capability was in Rolling Temblor, which was unfortunately no good against my field of Spirit tokens.

FNM Report 2/24

Stillson, 13 years ago

Took this deck to FNM on Friday and it performed very well(4-1). Round 1 beat Mono Black Zombies. Both games Curse of Death's Hold, Nephalia Drownyard, and Blue Sun's Zenith were my best cards. Any time he tried to resolve a zombie, it met a counter or if he landed a couple, Black Sun's Zenith. Game 1 I went down to like 4 life before I locked him down. After board the Nihil Spellbombs and Curse of Death's Hold hosed his Gravecrawler shenanigans.

Round 2 was against a UG Splinterfright deck. It wasn't very powerful and Grave Titan ended things swiftly.

Round 3 was against BW Tokens. There was a really cool sequence of turns that Massacre Wurmfoil proved his worth. So he has Sorin, Lord of Innistrad on board and already has 2 emblems. He plays Doomed Traveler and swings for 6 with two vampire tokens. My board is Darkslick Shores, Swamp, three Island, and two Ghost Quarter. I crack a GQ on my other GQ to get a swamp. Then I tap out to land Massacre Wurmfoil wiping his board completely. Next turn he plays Lingering Souls and flashes it back to get eight power on the board and passes. I untap, play a Nephalia Drownyard and play Phantasmal Image on the Wurm, wiping his board again and leaving up Dissipate and Mana Leak. Attack pass the turn. He makes a vampire and passes back. I play Curse of Death's Hold. GG.

Round 4 was against Solar Flare and it was a loooong drawn out match won by Nephalia Drownyard, Nihil Spellbomb, and Blue Sun's Zenith for the mill.

I lost Round 5 to UW Humans due to a REALLY bad misplay in game 3. I tapped out on turn 3 to kill a Champion of the Parish, and completely forgot to play around Hero of Bladehold. Of course he drops the Hero on his next turn, and I blank on a removal spell. He beats me down from there.

All in all the deck worked out fantastically. I didn't see a single Delver of Secrets, which is good. the UW decks are playing spells like Celestial Purge and Ray of Revelation to kill the Curse, which makes the matchup really tough.

Ratchet Bomb feature for Sac a Zombie!

Douke, 13 years ago

Played at a local tournament with this deck last saturday, the 25th.

First game was vs B/R vamps. First game was touch and go for awhile due to get mana screwed, but I ended up winning from 2 health after top decking Day of Judgment. Game two was easy, actually drew mana and just countered spells and smashed.

Third game was vs U/W spirits, more or less the same story as with vamps. I lost game one however, as my judgement was Mana Leaked, so game two and three I had Surgical Extraction in the deck to remove Mana Leak.

Game three was against a copy of the Wolf Run Ramp deck that one first and second place in the pro tour. Won game one due to being able to counter everything, but lost game two and three once he sideboarded in anti counter cards such as Thrun, the Last Troll and Autumn's Veil. I may have won, but he always used Beast Within on my Spellskite at the right times. So I lost that.

Game four was against a infinite combo deck with an infinite mana combo with a 2 coloress 1 red mana drop that generates 3 red mana, Heartless Summoning and lich. He then smashes with Periless myr or Devil's Play. Won first game, didn't even see the combos. Game 2 he got it with the myr, so game 3 i knew to counter/exile the liches and summonings, won relatively easily.

So all in all I went 3-1, not too bad imo.

Slight Overhaul

Nageri, 13 years ago

I think this iteration has a lot more to do on every turn and seems like it would never run out of steam.

Top 8

MagnaLynx21, 13 years ago

I'm happy to report that this build finished in 5-8 at my local DKA Game day. My brother was wielding it, so I can't give to many details; however I do know it had great match ups against UB Control and Solar Flare, along with being able to answer Delver pretty well with the solutions in the sideboard. Mass removal remains a problem, however I will be adding Think Twice to the sideboard, along with a pair of either Mana Leak or Negate to reload my hand with enough gas and answers to try and stay in control of the game. P.S: The face of a Delver player when there 1/1 is killed with a Leeching Bite, in response to it transforming is simply priceless. Oh and no one expects Corrupted Resolve and as such leads to major blow outs.

HUGE OVERHAUL

MikeWalter, 13 years ago

I made the deck suck a little less.

the hero

hoopnmonkey, 13 years ago

recently acquired a pair of the Hero of Oxid Ridge which works nicely in this deck. a little worried about the mana though

adt630, 13 years ago

I changed out Markov Blademaster for Stormblood Berserker at the suggestion of Prodigiousguy8. They seem to work a little bit better, costing one less and having a bit of evasion built in.

Jjt1212, 13 years ago

I think I'm going to drop the rampant growths as the mana dudes were enough ramp, and add +1 Avacyn's Pilgrim, go up to a full (4) acidic slime set. I will add some Bramblecrush or something else to abuse the land disruption.

No more bloodthirst.

JRE47, 13 years ago

After slowly whittling down since creating the deck, I finally dropped the bloodthirst stuff entirely. While the Bloodlord of Vaasgoth commanding a playset of Vampire Outcasts paired so nicely with Curse of the Pierced Heart, Geth's Verdict, and other damagers, it just took up too much space in the deck and slowed it WAY down. I think there's still promise there, but only as a more varied creature deck: the bloodthirsty Vampires are just too expensive to use without mixing in cheaper bloodthirsty guys like Duskhunter Bat and Stormblood Berserker.

Anyway, this now flows MUCH better, with cheapies like Vampire Interloper and Child of Night and Stromkirk Noble (who, yes, I need more of) rounding out the early turns until you can afford fatties. Now THIS might stand a chance at FNM. Time will tell....

Dark Ascension Update

Solstis, 13 years ago

It took me a while but I finally updated this deck to include Dark Ascension cards.

The biggest differences are replacing Diregraf Ghoul with Gravecrawler, and Cemetery Reaper with Diregraf Captain.

I added Tragic Slip for cheap removal, but kept a couple Doom Blades to deal with creatures without having to wait till a creature dies.

The price of Jace, Memory Adept has come down a bit so I've committed to getting one.

I still don't really know what I'm doing with my sideboard so some help with that would be appreciated.

Thanks for your comments.

Faylen, 13 years ago

It was Game Day, $5 entry fee.

At the time I was running Ratchet Bomb in Side and did not have a Nihil Spellbomb. After losing to a Delver deck I decided to mainboard Ratchet Bomb and Nihil Spellbomb to either kill a transformed Delver of Secrets  Flip since it's CMC is 0 on it's Night side or to shut down it's Pike with Spellbomb (Not to mention shut down Snapcaster Mage.

There was also a number of token decks and a large number of graveyard decks that would've given me less trouble if I had Ratchet Mainboard from the get go or could exile their yard.
