Jhoira, Master of Time

Commander / EDH*

Butterpeat

Time. It's always a good idea to start your deck description with something intriguing, to hook the reader. Time seems good enough.

Now to the good stuff.

This deck's commander is Jhoira of the Ghitu.

The point is to suspend a bunch of expensive stuff early and turtle out while we wait for them to mature, in proper Cheez-it fashon. Huge fatties or crushing spells--or both (looking at you, Dragonstorm)-- can be invested in early for cheap, then we can just wait it out, hiding behind a bunch of dudes and obnoxious gamestalling cards. While we're at it, may as well use some cards from Time Spiral block to interact with the suspendees and get them out quicker. Plus, mechanics like Storm, Surge, Buyback, and Kicker work really well with suspended cards, if you can line up your turns right. But more on that later.

Here's the cards you see in most commander decks in blue and red. Not too much description needed here.

Izzet Signet, Sol Ring, and Lightning Greaves are all great cards used all the time in commander. Same with Lightning Bolt, Vandalblast, and Cyclonic Rift. NEXT!

There are quite a few cards that can take time counters off of your suspendees. Shivan Sand-Mage, Timebender, and Fury Charm offer single use effects, while Paradox Haze, Clockspinning, Jhoira's Timebug, and Rift Elemental have repeatable counter removal.

But it gets really fun with mechanics like Storm and Kicker. I'll get into specific cards in the next section, but here's how they generally synergize with suspend:

Storm: If you can use some of the previous cards to line up a bunch of suspendees to resolve on the same turn, you can cast a bunch of spells during your upkeep, leaving all your mana open to cast your storm spell, and maybe one or two others, with a high storm count already. Or, if you stack your triggers correctly, you can have your storm spell be suspended and just cast it after all the rest, once again allowing it to copy several times.

Surge: Similar to storm, if your last time counter is removed at your upkeep, you don't need to worry about casting a spell, as the surge requirement will always be fulfilled. So enjoy cheap spells and bonus effects.

Buyback: Since you pay the mana several turns earlier but cast the spell on your upkeep, you will likely have plenty of free mana to pay the buyback cost and get the card back if you want. It's surprisingly useful, and can lead to some solid card advantage and repeatable effects if you plan out your turns right.

Kicker: Much like buyback, kicker costs were balanced for being in addition to the mana cost of the spell, not for there being an untap step or two in between. Kicker and multikicker can get out of hand in some situations for quite cheap costs, leading to some awesome plays and sweet, sweet value.

Day of the Dragons- I just want to shake the hand of whoever designed this card. It's great.

Dragonstorm- I have just five dragons in this deck, but they are huge and game changing, just like this spell. Getting to line this up with a bunch of other suspended cards to get a storm count of two or three is just awesome. Grab Utvara Hellkite, Niv-Mizzet, Dracogenius, Balefire Dragon, and Hellkite Tyrant, and probably some tissues for your opponents. Awesome.

Rite of Replication- So you've Dragonstormed out Utvara Hellkite and others but for some reason haven't won yet. Or maybe you're hopelessly outclassed by your opponent's huge fatties they cheated out with Kaalia of the Vast. All you need to do is suspend this little bundle of joy and make sure you've got 5 mana open when it resolves. Five copies of the best creature on the board ready to do your bidding. Mwa ha ha ha ha!!

Decree of Annihilation- Step 1: Suspend Decree. Step 2: Suspend whatever else you can. Step 3: Decree resolves. Everyone goes to topdeck wars, except you have a nice set of cards set up to resolve on your next few cards. Huge advantage. Fun. I originally had Worldfire in here too for even more fun, but turns out that's banned in commander... :(

Karn Liberated- I feel like I need to explain this one. This deck is for the most part on a budget. However, I am lucky enough to own a Karn, which is awesome, so I have to include it. Plus it's great flavor, since Jhoira and Karn used to be buddies, and his ultimate is basically just opening a time portal and being epic. So yeah. He's really cool.

Suspend fatties. Turtle out. Fatties resolve. Win.

It's always a good idea to end your deck description with a witty comment, because this is where everyone too lazy to read the whole description goes to look for anything important.
