Reconstructed and comments archived

Fugl, 7 years ago

The deck has seen some major changes. This is due to improvise being very powerful, and to better exploit it, Trail of evidence and a lot of spells have been replaced with artifacts. Therefore I also archived the comments, since it doesn't represent the deck anymore. I hope you guys will like the new direction this deck has taken. The deck will see changes due to tuning of the numbers of each card.

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who made this the #1 deck on T/O! Also, thanks for all the comments and suggestions so far ... they're archived [here](http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/crackdown-control-aer/discussion/) or under the View Archive button. As a reminder, this is an Izzet Control deck. If you're looking for other approaches, please check the accordion in the deck description :-)

1/13/17 FNM Results

loreleaf, 7 years ago

Another great showing for the deck at FNM. Quick summary of the matches below.

  • Match 1 - Jund - Win 2-1

The one game loss was to double Goyf, and I pulled no answers.

  • Match 2 - Jesaki Control - Win 2-1

Good opponent, I just got the soft lock in the 3rd match a turn before he could win. Side note I had a Pithing Needle down naming Jace, Vryn's Prodigy  Flip, it should have been the flip of Jace, Telepath Unbound  Flip which allowed him to win the game he took.

  • Match 3 - Grixis Something - Win 2-0

Unfortunately he had to mulligan down to 4 the first game, and when I led with a Thoughtseize, he coincided so I would not see what he was playing. Game 2 I just got ahead and was rapidly doing damage with the Rack and protecting myself with the Bridge. He was able to Hurkyl's Recall and get some damage in, but I had sufficient lands to play everything back next turn and win on his next upkeep.

  • Match 4 - Bant Eldrazi - Loss 1-2

Game 1 went pretty quick with me getting under a bridge, and waiting until a soft lock was established with 2 Necrogen Mists, and a Rack/Shrieking Affliction.

Game 2 was the most fun game I had with the deck. I did not see any creature removal, or a bridge, so I was rapidly losing life due to his 5/5 Trampler. However, I had both a Rack and Shrieking Affliction down and he was eating 5 or 6 a turn also. I was down to 3 life and need to top deck any removal or a bridge. or I was dead the next turn. Top deck was a Smallpox, which was amazing, as it would have killed his one creature, dropped him within range to die from the Rack/Shrieking Affliction from the one life loss within 2 turns, and made him short on lands to follow-up with the creature he was holding. The problem is that he was holding one card I did not know what it was. When I saw the Smallpox, I almost windmill slammed it, but his immediate response was a resounding "NO!" as he thrust forward a Stubborn Denial! Even though that handed me the game loss, it was pretty awesome!

Game 3 he got the jump on me and wiped me up pretty quick. He ended up winning the tourney so that helped my final breakers.

  • Match 5 - Fattie Beatdown - Win 2-0

Because I was at 9 points but not top seeded of the remaining 9 pointers, I had to play it out instead of ID into Top 8.

I know he was playing some high end payoff cards and a few green fatties. The premise would be to ramp into them and smash face. I really didn't see anything except one guy which quickly became a Victim of the Night... The deck must have done some great things to get him to 3-1, but did not develop at all against me. Easy wins putting me at 4-1.

So after 5 rounds, we did a cut to the Top 8. Again 32 players with 6 players dropping. Because the two 4-0 players ID into the 1st and 2nd spots (like I did last week), this earned me 3rd place.

With Fatal Push coming out this next week, I am at odds of how to incorporate this in the 75. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated and welcome!

A look at Aether Revolt

Gonna test to see how Baral, Chief of Compliance works in the deck.

Currently replacing Tezzeret's Gambit.

His low cost, ability to further lower the curve of the deck, and loot's when i counter a spell allowing me to dig through the deck is powerful, my only concern is the addition of another creature. Yes 4 creatures seems like a small amount but here it matters suprisingly.

Yahenni's Expertise as the new boardwipe

BillyButcher, 7 years ago

I added Yahenni's Expertise and cut 2 Fumigate because it kills much in the current meta, costs 1 less and I can play a Liliana, Thalia or Removal for free.

Added Voldaren Pariah. Sacrificing creatures with Scrap Trawler, Pia's Revollution, or Treasure Keeper on the the board seems nice.

Game Play 1/14/17

MTGApprentice2016, 7 years ago

So...this deck achieved the weirdest victory it ever likely will achieve; it won w/o firing a single shot. Yes, that's right, Xenagos won w/o ever attacking. In fact, the turn before I won, I'd just cast Xenagos and was preparing to drop some nasty creatures to go swinging with. So here's what happened. DaveC who was playing a Yisan, the Wanderer Bard used Shaman of Forgotten Ways's ability to knock our life totals down to the number of creatures we controlled. His life became 7, mine 1, and the other 3. DaveC then attacked into Maverick07169's Kaalia of the Vast whom had all creatures tapped from his last rounds attacks, and was quite frankly set to win the game. Next, in response to the attack, Maverick07169 cast a Deflecting Palm targeting DaveC's Thunderfoot Baloth, however, his attack contained enough damage to kill Maverick07169, in spite of Gisela, Blade of Goldnight being on the table. Net result due to the simultaneous nature of combat damage...Xenagos Wins (and I'm left scratching my head wondering what just happened because that's not how Xenagos is supposed to win)!

My next victory was more traditional, though it did come via infinite combat phases. Savage Ventmaw and Aggravated Assault are a lot of fun (for me) together. Having Void Winnower on the field to help stop the pesky blue mage really shined and was what let me pull off the infinite combat phases. It might end up staying in the list.

The other memorable highlights of the games played: I finally got to cast Berserk (targeting Ulamog no less) and Sylvan Library. Also, Selvala's Stampede isn't getting the attention that it deserves. It is a solid card that I got to crack off twice in the games played.

Things noticed: This deck doesn't do well against decks that are really quick to build armies. Token decks for example, or decks that have a really low CMC. I'm thinking that I might need to include another board sweeper to deal with this which may lead to the inclusion of Blasphemous Act.

Some changes for the upcoming set

usurphling, 7 years ago

So, I did some play testing against GRx energy, BG delirium and BW control and this deck was crushed so I did some changes to adapt the upcoming metagame.

-1 Sphinx of the Final Word - hes now in the sideboard against control mirror matches and for those decks which will use Baral, Chief of Compliance.

-1 To the Slaughter - with planeswalkers threatening me in the first 3-4 turns, I need a direct answer to them thus reverted back to Ruinous Path

-1 Fumigate - i think Yahenni's Expertise will take care of aggro decks. If in case they will go wider, I will bring it in my sideboard...just 1 copy of it in the SB.

-1 Fatal Push - well, i reverted 4 copies of Grasp of Darkness and switched Evolving Wilds back to Aether Hubs

-1 land - i think 25 lands are enough to handle this deck. there were times that im dropping lands in stalling parts of the game.

+1 Torrential Gearhulk - since im playing a lot of instant spells and I got a copy of my own, Ill add it on this deck.

+2 Ruinous Path - check to the slaugher's explanations above.

+2 Anticipate - I reverted it back for early game card searching.

+1 Ob Nixilis Reignited - well, I guess I need one more planeswalker if in case I cant do my wincons.

I hope this will improve my deck more. As always, your +1 upvotes and constructed criticisms will be appreciated.

Turnabout -> Pongify

Lim-Dul's Vault -> Delay

The list has become a lot faster, and with the addition of Dramatic Reversal turnabout isn't my go to insane ritual anymore. Less islands and more artifacts makes Reversal a lot better and it's still a Merchant Scroll target.

Lim-Dul's got cut because it as a card was just "good enough". It can't tutor ad nauseam unless you luckily hit it in the first 15-20 cards and on your naus turn it doesn't do anything.

Pongify and Delay are just more interaction.
