Go infinite with Crackdown Construct and Wandering Fumarole? Sure, that'll do nicely!

The core idea is to make Crackdown Construct HUGE by activating Wandering Fumarole and swapping its Power and Toughness an arbitrarily large number of times, then attacking with an Unblockable effect. Here's the Gatherer text for Crackdown Construct, in case you're wondering if this actually works. Spoiler alert: It does! :-)

Thanks in advance for your thoughts and suggestions!

Big shout-outs to ...

And please don't hesitate to +1 Upvote this deck if you like it ... especially if you like it enough to put it in a folder :-)

I made a bunch of changes to the deck, based on playtesting and Raymond Perez' U/R Control (Top 16 SCG Columbus). I'm sure it will continue to evolve, but I'm going to start the season like this.

As always, thanks for all the comments and suggestions so far ... they're archived here or under the View Archive button.

And as a reminder, this is an Izzet Control deck. If you're looking for other approaches, please check the accordion in the deck description :-)

May i suggest Slip Through Space? Its a good 1 mana unblockable spell.

Slip Through Space has proven to be extremely meh in testing. I love the card in an Izzet Prowess deck, and actually started with it as four-of. But I moved it to a three-of, then a two-of, and just today dropped it to zero. The problem is it's basically a dead card in hand until the last play of the game (ok, it's not totally dead ... you can always cycle it or discard it to Key to the City for a Rummage). And having it countered on the Big Swing feels TERRIBLE.

Thanks though!

I've been playtesting this a lot against my Speedway Champions deck and it does really well.

Basically it comes down to whoever has the right Counter spell at the right time, as to who wins.

Thanks, but I have to confess Speedway Champions may be the only fair match-up for this deck. I played against a bunch of different brews earlier this week and seriously went 0-5:

  • 0-2 vs. GW Tokens
  • 1-2 vs. Abzan Goodstuff
  • 0-2 vs. Jund Goodstuff
  • 0-2 vs. GW Goodstuff
  • 1-2 vs. UW Reservoir

I know Control is always tough early in the season and especially against Rogue brews (because it's hard to tell what really needs to be countered). And I also know I have a TON to learn about playing Control. But frankly, your time might be better invested testing against Raymond Perez' U/R Control (Top 16 SCG Columbus) :-/

So far in my testing a card I've found to be invaluable for control is Horribly Awry. Turning off Scrapheap Scrounger is huge, and its hits almost every relevant creature in standard. So far I've been going for a 4 HA - 2 Negate - 2 Disallow for my counter suite and I've had great results.

Torrential Gearhulk should also be somewhere in the deck... The value is just to real to make it any other way.
