Broken Ambitions

Instant

Counter target spell unless its controller pays {{X}}. Clash with an opponent. If you win, that spell's controller puts the top four cards of his or her library into his or her graveyard. (Each clashing player reveals the top card of his or her library, then puts that card on the top or bottom. A player wins if his or her card had a higher converted mana cost.)

TypicalTimmy, that is the clash mechanic, as seen on Broken Ambitions, Fistful of Force, or Lash Out.

Jwari Disruption  Flip is great as it sits in land slots - sandbar will do fine in its place so long as your spell count is high enough. Even a one of in your list massively improves tempo if your opponent plays around it.

Mana leak has some sweet alternatives - Lose Focus in particular lets you scale up as the game draws on, and is hard to protect against due to copies.

Thassa's Intervention is both cheaper than memory deluge and acts as a counterspell.

I'd give a little thought to old Grindclock style decks, where you just play protect the artifact until you can win - or play something like Zur's Weirding where you reach a point where you just lock out the game and win on life. As is, you'll need to use recursion on mill spells which isn't being used holding up counterspells.

The main thing I'd consider going outside budget for is Surgical Extraction - hitting the shuffle eldrazi is essential to mill decks, while being able to remove a deck's main threats or answers when you see them in the graveyard is incredible. On that note, Gut shot/Void mirror is a nonbo- you'll want one of them in the sideboard to swap into. Tormod's Crypt or similar will do on a budget, but you do need to have an answer for milling a Kroxa, Titan of Death's Hunger or similar somewhere in the 75.

Baral's draw/discard is mostly land filtering here, and the cost reduction isn't as crazy as it is when ramping - you could safely swap it for more draw power.

Broken Ambitions is traditional for counter/mill.

I'd want a wrath effect or comparable card in the side or main - as is you have 4x suspend, 4x gut shot for creature matchups, which doesn't feel like enough what with the time counter thing meaning you need another card afterwards - its a great synergy with void mirror, but I'd want a bit more.

More important than any of this advice is this - target your meta. Put sideboard cards maindeck to win your FNM - the control decks that make it through tournaments aren't the ones that have the best 'generic answers' (though they feature them), but ones that target metagame weaknesses - the maindeck Steel Sabotage or Narset's Reversal or for example. The void mirror setup is an incredible start for that - build out from there.

Did you see how my group uses Boost Cards to change the deck difficulty?

Boost Cards

If you want to play against the Horde with stronger decks, you can use cards to boost its strength.

The following cards provide the boosts described.

Glenn, the Voice of Calm gives all Horde creatures Skulk.

Garruk, Apex Predator gives all Horde creatures +5/+5 and Trample.

Knight of the Ebon Legion gives all Horde creatures +3/+3 and Deathtouch.

Echoing Equation lets all Horde creatures become a copy of the strongest Horde creature on the field, for one turn.

Broken Ambitions choose a Hero each turn to Clash with the Horde, on the Horde's End Step. Who ever loses puts the top four cards of their library into their graveyard.

Captivating Glance choose a Hero each turn to Clash with the Horde, on the Horde's End Step. (That player must have control of at least one creature. If no player has any creatures, the Clash does not occur.) Who ever wins captures the most advantageous opponent creature.

Note only the Hero who Clashed with the Horde is effected by the penalty or benefit. They must be the player to put four cards into their graveyard. The Horde can only capture one of their creatures, and only they can capture a Horde creature.

It works well to roll dice to determine a random Hero to Clash with the Horde.

Use them like this:

  1. Sleeve them up in the same sleeves used for the rest of the Horde deck.

  2. Use a token, a land, or some other substitute for a double faced card, if you want to keep it in a clear sleeve.

  3. The Heroes need to discuss which card(s) they think should be used, to make things harder for the decks they are playing.

  4. The Heroes need to decide when they think the boost(s) should occur eg. After 15 cards have been played, then after another 15 cards, then after 5 cards.

Try to be as strategic as possible. Think about it as though you are Sideboarding on behalf of the Horde.

  5. Shuffle the Horde, then position the boost card(s) where it has been decided.

  6. The Horde creatures then get the buff(s) indicated, once a card has been revealed.

  7. The boost cards are not part of the deck and, as such, don't go into the graveyard. As soon as they are turned over they go into the Boost Zone.

  8. Once a boost card is drawn, drawing cards from the Horde deck ceases, unless a Heroes' card calls for more draw.

  9. Each card in the Boost Zone stacks eg. If Glenn, the Voice of Calm and Garruk, Apex Predator are both in the Boost Zone, all Horde creatures have Skulk, +5/+5, and Trample.

You can use none of the boosts, some of the boosts, or ALL of the boosts!

Tinnuki I added the awful Bloodchief Ascension x Mindcrank combo and Tunnel Vision x Broken Ambitions to give her a chance against The Frozen Wastes of New Phyrexia and some of my other horrible decks. Tunnel Vision synergises with some of the other deck manipulation cards you have in here. Also I had a Bitterblossom laying around so I threw it in.

You have a lot of 5+ cmc cards and not a lot of lands to guarantee they get cast. I'd rather have more mill spells and creatures in the 1-3 range to ensure you're advancing the gameplan in the early stages of the game, especially with only 19 lands. If you do want to keep costs high, Broken Ambitions could make a lot of sense as your counterspell of choice. Otherwise, I like Didn't Say Please or Drown in the Loch for mill, Cryptic Command for flexibility, Dream Fracture for forced draw, or Mana Leak if you just need something efficient on a budget. In replacing Brainstorm, it depends on whether your intentions are to draw as many cards as possible for Jace's Erasure or stack your deck. Visions of Beyond is the more obvious solution to both problems if you can afford it. For card draw, some options are Sphinx's Tutelage, Psychic Corrosion, wheels like Windfall, symmetrical draws like Howling Mine, and maybe a sink like Blue Sun's Zenith. For the more general plan of fixing your draws cheaply, Halimar Depths, Serum Visions, Sleight of Hand, and Telling Time are options that come up frequently.

Have you considered Pemmin's Aura as a back-up for Freed from the Real?

Similarly, some of your instant-speed spells have X-cost spells that are comparable, for example Counter Spells (Broken Ambitions, Condescend and Syncopate).

Finally, have you considered some additional tutors to pull Freed from the Real more frequently? Demonic Tutor, Diabolic Tutor, Diabolic Intent, Diabolic Revelation just for starters?

Also: Being a mono colored deck I would change out your conuterspells that are conditional for ones that are less of.

For example: I would run Broken Ambitions or Dream Fracture over Mana Leak and instead of Daze I would run Deprive .
