Some more changes
Kitran, 12 years ago
Took our Liliana of the Dark Realms and put in Sorin, Lord of Innistrad. With that change, I took out 4x Swamp and put in 4x Isolated Chapel. Took out 3x Swamp for 3x Cavern of Souls. Figure it's worth protecting the vampires.
Figure this is a small change that could benefit from the Exquisite Blood that is coming my way. Will be testing this deck tomorrow.

3rd Place:Match 1: 2-1 Treefolk
Match 2: 1-2 MUD (Same deck I beat in the previous tournament)
Match 3: 2-0 Scapeshift Valakut

I streamlined by rotating 4x Fencing Ace or 4x Knight of Glory depending on who I am facing increasing their draw, and I added Shieldmates to help hexproof things like Sublime Archangel and Bruna, Light of Alabaster. Should make it a little harder to get rid of my bombs mid-late game and help speed up creature deployment early game. Sideboard I added Faith's Reward and Negate to counter board wipes and Terminus
GP Indiannapolis Tryout

This deck won its second straight Grand Prix Trial going undefeated. (the last one it won was Grand Prix Toronto). I don't plan on going to these places, but it's nice to know that it is of caliber that can get me free byes at these big tourneys. Snapcaster is still needed vs my current Ranger's Path, but all in due time. My hardest match up of the day was a Jund Control, which I simply outplayed. Jace kept +1ing to limit only 1 damage from a Vampire Nighthawk, who kept attacking Jace. Kept me in the game till I ended up winning with Armada Wurm + Wurm token + Thragtusk + 2x Beasts and a surprise Craterhoof for 63 damage to his 35 life and 11 blocked.OptimusGeorge, 12 years ago
Added 2 Chronic Floodings. removed 2 Jace, Memory Adepts. More changes to come. I need another Trepanation Blade. Runechanter's Pike is a place holder for now. I think I'm liking Increasing Confusion and Sands of Delirium to replace the Talrand's Invocations.

After some playtesting I've discovered that Skeletal Grimace really only adds a +1/+1 bonus. The regeneration rarely gets used because it's removed before I can use it most of the time. You'd have to wait til you had 3 mana open before you can play it and usually you'll have something better to play instead anyway so I'm cutting it in favor of more removal. Adding Tragic Slip.

Round 1: 2-0 against R/B aggro Round 2: 2-1 against BANT Enchantments Round 3: 2-0 against W/G aggro Round 4: 1-2 against R/G aggro VEXING DEVIL!! Pretty much had no issues, I find my deck starting kinda slow and my opponent getting me down to 5 life or less and then [Sphinx's Revelation] saving the day and [thragtusk] helps finish them off

Losing with dignity
Mkorb, 12 years ago
I've been beaten up and down with this deck but at least with some suggestions by killkong1211 I can lose after many turn of control and subtile ways to avoid death.
Some support cards are fine: Nevermore is insiodious against control bants, Appetite for Brains can always find a just target and Sorin, Lord of Innistrad can easily put up a good table and Chromatic Lantern really helps out. But these are not winning condition. How I'm supposed to put up a stable control and win with these colours ?

FNM - 5 round
JasonMB, 12 years ago
Ok, so I'll start with a list of cards and how each of them did for me. Overall I went 2-3. All 5 of my matches went to the 3rd round though.
Creatures
Acidic Slime - I didn't really draw this that often, but when I did it worked as needed - blowing up an O-ring or just a land. I almost got to a point to blink it 4-5 times in a turn, but lost the turn before.
Axebane Guardian - love these guys. Good mana production and they can block a little.
Deadeye Navigator - Really a great creature. A strong 5/5 for 6 and that soulbound has so many uses. Evasion alone is good, but then combined with the creatures in this deck just makes it a star.
Elder of Laurels - I got him out a couple times and worked really well. Boosting my Tree of Redemption and than swapping hp with it's toughness is really effective. Or just attacking and leaving 4 or 8 mana open ready to pump any 1 or 2 creatures by 5 or 6...definitely a good threat.
Fog Bank - Does really great as an early blocker and against deathtouch or lifelink creatures as it negates them. But against Rancor'd creatures...not too good.
Galvanic Alchemist - Alone, he's not terrible as a blocker. Got the infinite mana combo with him and the Guardian once or twice though.
Gatecreeper Vine - I wish I could use Farseek instead, but I need the defenders. He sucks as anything but a chump block though and I usually want to preserve defenders to boost my Axebane
Ludevic's Test Subject Flip - 3 might be a bit much, but I did win a game by flipping him on my opponents turn and swinging for that extra 13. I also was able to flash one at end of opponents turn and pay the 10 to flip it once too.
Mindshrieker - I got this guy out a lot and he was a good random defender. They never knew how strong he'd be. Also, played a deck that got Vampire Nocturnus out and it was handy to force mill 1 card at a time to make sure a black card wasn't revealed.
Thragtusk - I need a 3rd. I never got him and a Deadeye out at same time....woulda been pretty ideal.
Tree of Redemption - He saved my bacon many games. Strong blocker and good ability. For 4 mana he's worth it.
Zealous Conscripts - I got these guys a bunch and combo'd with the Deadeye Navigator (with any without the Lotus) to steal creatures. I did infinite mana combo twice using them and of course that's gg. Even w/o infinite mana though, it's perfect defense to keep 2 mana and flash him on opponents attack to steal their best creature and block with it.
Alchemist's Refuge - love this card with a good amount of mana.
Devil's Play - Good removal - 2 kills for 1 card. Increasing Confusion - I actually won off this card. I didn't have infinite mana, but it was late game and I top decked this 1 turn before I was dead. I cast it once for 1, then flashed it back for about 17 and milled them out (34 cards)
Gilded Lotus - I drew this often and got a couple out at a time...but a lot of times, by time I could play this, I could also play my other 5 drops...so I need to balance out.
Sideboard
Garruk, Primal Hunter - was a great sideboard, I might want him main for the card draw. Garruk Relentless Flip - also a good sideboard card.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I played against fast aggro mostly. G/W humans, mono green, black vamps, black/red/white rites, and green/white tokens. I definitely need more ramp and more early game stuff.
I will have to consider what elements to keep in the deck and what to thin out for some Arbor Elves or Farseeks. Maybe Elvish Visionary since I can use that early or late game and it could take advantage of some flashing too. Maybe I'll look into 4 Farseeks and 4 fogs. Sometimes I just need an extra turn to get my combos rolling...maybe Forbidden Alchemy too. I can still use it's flashback with lotus or axebane to give me black.
I'll be missing next FNM, so I have a couple weeks to Ponder ideas. The Hydra might be a good add and last minute I did put two in my sideboard and subbed them in once, but I never got one out.
FNM Play x3
I've been slacking in updating this, but I've taken 1st in the last 3 FNM events that I've played with this deck.
Wizard of the Damned, 12 years ago
Made a few changes. Lets see how it works now
Antebios, 12 years ago
Today I playtested it against Superfriends (with Progenitus as commander) and some other decks. Against Superfriends I went 2-0 (I won even the one where Progenitus hit the battlefield). In one of the matches I got to 39 mana (Extraplanar Lens, Gauntlet of Power and Cabal Coffers). It ended when I tutored Drain Life.
I am thinking to take out Mind Twist or Bloodhusk Ritualist because most of the times I can make them discard they only have 1 or 2 cards in hand.
Also, not sure about Seizan, Perverter of Truth. On a multiplayer game, the other players drew 2 cards and the last one killed him, so I ended up without additional cards though my opponents did.
Other changes:
Swapped Reiver Demon for Dread Cacodemon. Also swapped Hideous End for Sever the Bloodline, so I can deal against indestructible creatures.
First Time
kfcl, 12 years ago
First time playing this today in FFA, starting hand was so-so and card draws got worse and worse, and basically everyone targeted me from the start so I lost all my engines, will probably need some better way to protect my commander and board position. Might also fare better in 2HG with someone to protect me. Need more games to find out.
More updates.
Added:
4x Blood Artist
2x Desecration Demon
Removed:
2x Diregraf Ghoul
2x Stromkirk Noble
2x Vampire Nighthawk
Came in 5th at FNM this time.
First match was a semi-mirror match. Opponent had a very similar deck but was running Bonfire of the Damned and Abrupt Decay. I ended up winning the first game very quickly, then the second went surprisingly slow. Took 13+ turns, but I ended up winning. 2-0
2nd match was against u/w deck. He had Geist of Saint Traft in play, and ended up beating me first game. 2nd game got me down to four life with Geist in play, but I had a Desecration Demon and Blood Artist in play. He had to sacrifice one creature for Demon, then I killed two more before he could ever swing with Geist which put me at 7 life, just out of range for the Geist and Angel to kill me. The 3rd game went over quickly with some really fast creatures and kill spells. 2-1
3rd match I lost. 0-2. I kept an opening hand with 3 Rakdos Cacklers, 3 Vexing Devils, but no land. And was just hoping for a turn 1 or 2 land. I ended up not getting any until like turn 5 and lost this first one badly. 2nd game I had to mulligan to 5 I think. I just didn't have any luck with this matchup. Not sure what all he was playing, but he had G/W/B cards. Sorin, Thragtusk, a lot of token stuff.
4th match was another semi-mirror match. Opponent was playing more Zombies though. 1st game I got Vexing Devil and 3 Pillar of Flames in my opening hand and was able to kill off his Zombies and exile those Gravecrawlers. 2nd game, I got out a Desecration Demon and Blood Artist and killed off his zombies to stop Crawlers again. 2-0.
So, wasn't too bad. Considering switching out the remaining 2 Diregraf Ghouls for Deathrite Shamans. I pulled 3 of these but have sold them all... I could use it on instants/sorceries to make opponents lose life. Or if any land hits the graveyard, as mana excel. If I do this, I may add some Overgrown Tomb or Stomping Ground
when it becomes standard just to have a slim possibility of using Shaman's third ability. And I may add Abrupt Decay if I do this.
FNM 1
deathtopop, 12 years ago
Before the most recent slew of updates. Went 3 - 2, with mana troubles that've been corrected, and lost in a close game in the first round of top 8. A good start.
Malefactor, 12 years ago
Last night I went 3-1 at FNM. Lost to a U/W Spirit deck 2-1. Won the first round but couldn't get the the last two. I'm thinking about a few changes.
Went 3-1 at my FNM last night, losing only in the last round to the store owner who had the perfect deck against me (B/R Human Vampires). Beat some really well designed decks, including a Bant Midrange, RUW Control and a Bant Humans. Overall i'm fairly satisfied with how this deck is doing, especially considering i don't have a sideboard. Suggestions for sideboard welcome.
