1 - Wodar Temple of Triumph Ordeal of Thassa Peak Eruption Prowler's Helm (foil) Triton Fortune Hunter Commune with the Gods Crackling Triton Dragon Mantle Gray Merchant of Asphodel - Pick 1 by Wodar Lagonna-Band Elder Omenspeaker Portent of Betrayal Ray of Dissolution Wavecrash Triton Mountain This is the black devotion route, which, given the rest of these packs, might end up well for them. Now held by: Deckbuilder345 - Dragon Mantle could be strong. Portent of Betrayal is also potentiall useful, and Temple is in their colors, albeit an awful pick 2. 2 - Deckbuilder345 Xenagos, the Reveler Akroan Hoplite Cutthroat Maneuver Warriors' Lesson Aqueous Form Asphodel Wanderer Fleetfeather Sandals Gray Merchant of Asphodel Prescient Chimera Traveler's Amulet Triton Shorethief Two-Headed Cerberus Vulpine Goliath Wingsteed Rider - Pick 1 by Deckbuilder345 Plains I like the pick AND I don't like it. On one hand, it takes discipline and willpower not to take a strong planeswalker, even out of your colors in pack 3. On the other hand, I think taking the planeswalker and going G/R actually would have improved their deck, in this case. Wingsteed is among the best R/W heroic cards, to be sure, but I'm still not sure they'll get the juice to make it work. Now held by - GureiSeion - Gray Merchant works with them, but they can totally splash red for Xenagos. Hard to pass that up. Dude takes over games. 3 - GureiSeion Prognostic Sphinx Horizon Chimera Nylea's Emissary Tormented Hero Chosen by Heliod Commune with the Gods Griptide Hopeful Eidolon Lash of the Whip - Pick 1 by GureiSeion Minotaur Skullcleaver Returned Centaur Setessan Battle Priest Spark Jolt Vaporkin Plains A solid choice, though passing Prognostic Sphinx is annoying. Now held by: Actiontech - Prog Sphinx is a slam dunk here, I think. 4 - Actiontech Boon Satyr - Pick 1 by Actiontech Battlewise Hoplite Gainsay Thassa's Emissary Aqueous Form Baleful Eidolon Battlewise Valor Deathbellow Raider Guardians of Meletis Loathsome Catoblepas Spearpoint Oread Vaporkin Vulpine Goliath Yoked Ox Swamp Hm. Is this better, or is Thassa's Emissary? I am not really sure. Now held by: Goody - Spearpoint Oread would be the standard pick here. 5 - Goody Curse of the Swine Decorated Griffin Purphoros's Emissary - Pick 1 by Goody Satyr Piper Asphodel Wanderer Baleful Eidolon Benthic Giant Disciple of Phenax Gods Willing Gray Merchant of Asphodel Prescient Chimera Setessan Griffin Titan's Strength Voyaging Satyr Plains Definitely seems best. Now held by: Euphonatron - They should, and probably will, take Curse of the Swine. 6 - Euphonatron Thoughtseize Centaur Battlemaster Dark Betrayal (foil) Spellheart Chimera Stoneshock Giant Annul Baleful Eidolon Borderland Minotaur Dragon Mantle Felhide Minotaur Nessian Asp - Pick 1 by Euphonatron Viper's Kiss Vulpine Goliath Yoked Ox Forest Probably the best pick. Battlemaster can be considered, but tough for them to make work now. Now held by: Absinthman - Ouch, not much great here. Stoneshock? 7 - Absinthman Purphoros, God of the Forge Sea God's Revenge - Pick 1 by Absinthman Tormented Hero Triton Tactics Bronze Sable Cavern Lampad Crackling Triton Divine Verdict Gray Merchant of Asphodel Last Breath Portent of Betrayal Sip of Hemlock Triton Shorethief Unknown Shores Plains I agree 100%. I think Sea God is considerably more useful than Red God, especially in a potentially three-color deck. Now held by: Deco_y - Verdict or Gary? Tough choice. I'd get Verdict, but knowing how much black devotion is in this last set of packs, Gary might be objectively best. 8 - Deco_y Hammer of Purphoros Battlewise Hoplite Cutthroat Maneuver Shipwreck Singer (foil) Vanquish the Foul Agent of Horizons Divine Verdict - Pick 1 by Deco_y Fade into Antiquity Observant Alseid Satyr Rambler Scourgemark Setessan Battle Priest Sip of Hemlock Triton Shorethief Plains Totally best. Now held by: Wodar - Sip or Singer would both be fine choices.

EDH Wednesday

Dorotheus, 11 years ago

Commander Wednesday I took my incomplete deck to the local EDH tourney today, not expecting much. I the slots on the board filled with other mono-black cards that I just more or less figured were generally good. Well... it worked. A couple cards that aren't in the mainboard came up, and didn't really help, but when you get Gray Merchant of Asphodel out 3 times and drain for 10, 8, and 10 (thats 78 life, gained) with 3 opponents. Then Maga, Traitor to Mortals hits twice for 15 and 10 for X. I had 120+ life at the end of that one...

My deck functioned WAAAY better than I could have even hoped. Now to get the fine tuning down.

changed the deck

shawneenerdybear, 11 years ago

{The Death Punch} had to be completely changed it was broken on every level, even though the old deck had death touch in more ways it had no way to break the opponent down from life. I think adding Wurms helped a lot.

piman34, 11 years ago

went 1-1-1. SHOULD have been 2-1-0. but my stupid ass didn't remember that Thassa had an unblockable passive, and 8-10 turns went by without me realizing this, which ultimately led to the draw in game 3. I will definitely learn for next time.

Removed guild gates added 2x Forest and 2x Plains. Removed Boon Satyr for Witchstalker which works well with Ajani,Caller of the Pride and Kalonian Hydra. Sided the Experiment One for 4x Elvish Mystic which has been helping me get more creature/ spells on the field quicker. Removed 4x Call of the Conclave for 3x Unflinching Couragefoil allowing me at times to swing for 6 and gain 6 on turn 4.

Creature removal

brianorwhatever, 11 years ago

I played a few rounds with a friend of mine with our decks swapped, and he gave me some sound advice, I feel, on the deck. I've moved the 3 copies of Experiment One and Witchstalker to the sideboard for use against control and aggro decks, respectively, ( The Experiment One's low cost and gradually increasing power hitting them in the face keeps the pressure on, and its regenerate ability gives it staying power in the midgame and Witchstalkers 3/3 Hexproof creature status has proven to be a huge problem for Red Deck Wins, as well as delaying blue devotion), and removed the Lotleth Trolls entirely. I'm going to experiment with Pack Rat at this upcoming fnm and hope to see some success with him, and I'm hopefully coming into a copy of Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx that can fuel multiple reproductions of it to add another win condition. Wish me luck!

So my deck ran into an accident, and some pieces had to replaced. I took this chance to change it up a little bit!

Top 8!

mrbloo1848, 11 years ago

The new revised list's debut night was moderately successful! Went 3-2 out of 5 rounds to finish in 7th place. I really like this list more (so far anyway) than my Junk list, since it still has some answers to the crucial early game development of green devotion decks while having ways to prevent creatures from ever swinging or even resolve.

R1: Rakdos Aggro (L 1-2)

Interesting deck. Runs a bunch of haste and/or hard-hitting creatures like Rakdos Shred-Freak, Hellhole Flailer, Exava, Rakdos Blood Witch, etc. Fast and has some resilience through constant haste threats. Won game 1 when Elspeth, Sun's Champion was able to stick around long enough to ultimate with 1 loyalty to spare. Lost game 2 when I didn't my removals or threats after my first couple in my opener. Lost game 3 when I missed my third land drop until it was a couple turns too late and I've taken too much damage to recover.

R2: Azorius Control (W 2-0)

Your garden variety Azorius control. He had to mulligan to 2 cards because he kept drawing no-landers in a row. He still managed to put up a good fight in game 1 with 2 cards since he didn't miss a land drop after turn 1. Blind Obedience bought him a lot of time against my Obzedat, Ghost Council. Game 2 after casting back-to-back Rakdos's Return for 2 and 4, respectively, he was out of answers. I then was able to force enough threats through the few counterspells to eventually take over the game. Blood Baron of Vizkopa did hard work.

R3: American Control (L 1-2)

This guy's been playing American control since before rotation and still does to this day. Won game 1 when he couldn't answer Stormbreath Dragon after having been hit by Rakdos's Return, taking out his Essence Scatter. Lost games 2 and 3 to AEtherling since I couldn't draw enough threats to finish the game before he could safely cast him. Damn that card.

R4: Dimir Mill (W 2-0)

Dimir deck that focuses on milling while still being able to put threats on the board. Won game 1 with 2 Boros Reckoner and Rakdos Keyrune. He missed land drops in game 2 and paid dearly for it as I started accelerating into Blood Baron of Vizkopa who finished the game with the 10/10 flying swing. Rakdos's Return was this match's MVP, hitting his Jace, Architect of Thought on curve both games.

R5: Boros Humans (W 2-0)

I casted an early Thoughtseize to reveal a bunch of double white cards when he had only one white source so I removed the only card he could cast, Cavalry Pegasus. He didn't draw another white source again that game and was stuck with a full hand. I was able to monstrous Stormbreath Dragon, dealing 7 to him before combat, with more than enough to finish. He missed land drops game 2 and Blood Baron of Vizkopa finished the game for me after Boros Reckoners got a ton of damage in early.

So I actually like the color combination in my meta a lot. It has the answers to mongreen swarm decks without resorting to Supreme Verdict and has tremendous amount of hand disruption. Tonight's MVP is definitely Rakdos's Return. Learn to cast this card at the right time and you will strip your opponents of answers and win-cons.

Note to self: Find answers to AEtherling. I may be drastic enough to run Debtor's Pulpit in the sideboard, if I see any more of him.

Testing!

Diresam12, 11 years ago

The deck did very well against a plethora of casual and budget deck. UB Ninja, UB Mill, Allies, Slivers, Red Deck Wins, etc. Normally, the win comes at turn 7 with a mix of burn, Blightning and the The Rack/Shrieking Affliction lock.Next will be against more harder deck to beat in two weeks.

top 8

Eerryykk1313, 11 years ago

Went 3/1 for the night. Went 2-0 against some janky golgari aggro. Played against barely Boros and ended up losing 1-2. The last game I had all the answers just waiting for a white mana for the glare of heresys and I never found it. After that I proceeded to go 2-0 against UW control and America control putting me in 4th overall. Very happy with the deck performance so until further notice I will not be changing anything except maybe adding another plains

some minor changes

KrlosPR, 11 years ago

Removed Nekusar and Chainer's Edict for Telemin Performance and Psychic Intrusion plus added Fact or Fiction. Well see how it works

I know cards like Scroll Rack, Sensei's Divining Top, Damnation, Snapcaster Mage and few others might give so much power to the deck but i am trying to keep it cheap, this game can get really expensive sometimes, sadly. Snapcaster would be amazing in here i suppose :(

Aggro Update

TheAshenKnight, 11 years ago

So I've been doing playtests about every day when I have time against aggro decks, and I can usually deal with some, but higher level ones, especially ones like Red Deck Wins, give me trouble. Mono Green and Black Devotion decks also gave me problems, mostly with Desecration Demon and anything with 5 toughness or more. Therefore, I've added a few things to the sideboard to help me deal with early pressure and fatties, and took out some stuff to let me do it.

First of all, I've gotten rid of Nivix Cyclops entirely, and replaced it with 1 copy of Spellheart Chimera. Late game, that thing can get huge, and hit hard every turn if they don't have answers for it, unlike the cyclops, which can only hit sometimes. It doesn't block as well, but I felt the higher power offsets that in many cases.

I've reduced Izzet Charm to a 2 of, which I may change here soon after I test it some more. About 90% of the time I only used its burn ability, and Shock does it better. I didn't want to get rid of it completely, since it can act as both deck cycling and countering, but I think 4 was probably too many. I might bump it up to 3 later if I feel the need to. There are quite a few things I may need to counter.

I added 3 Anger of the Gods to the sideboard as well. It's not quite as effective as an overloaded Mizzium Mortars, and hits my (few) creatures in the process, but as an early aggro deterrent, it keeps me alive much better.

I also took both copies of Dispel out of the sideboard, and replaced them with Shock, which I should probably replace with something else, really, but I'm not sure what as of yet. For now, I'm keeping them in, as I need the extra burn in aggro matchups.

I replaced a Rapid Hybridization with a Curse of the Swine as well. Against mono green devotion, both are great, but the Curse deals with things better, albeit with a higher mana cost.
