Chainer, Slave to Shadows

Legendary Creature - Horror Shade

Whenever ~ enters the battlefield, create a Black X/Y Shadow Token, where X is ~'s toughness, and Y is ~'s power.

At the beginning of each upkeep, you may have each player discard a card. If you do, each player draws a card, then loses 2 life. If you do not control a Shadow Token, create one.

3/5

I've looked at it a bit, but I think it would be helpful to know which (if any) clues you've gotten.

The ones I've found (or have a decent idea of) thus far are:

  • B) I think it's Mirari as that makes the most sense, but could also be Hankyu or Onulet
  • E) I want to say tao
  • F) The only black instant from 2004 or earlier that gives -1/-1 with 5 characters in its name is Night
  • G) Mark Rosewater has a post from 2016 that says BFM inspired split cards, but it's weird that post is from 2016 and the puzzle is from 2004.
  • J) I'm fairly sure it's weenie
  • K) The only word that comes after splice on cards is onto (Dampen Thought)
  • T) I heavily suspect this is flash, but the h in location 149 is throwing me off.

Ok I just realized I can not edit that comments :) since the gameplan looks now clearer to me I would change some cuts and make some other suggestions.

Caller of the Pack Very expensive, After you tapped out and if it sticks ( survives one whole round ) you only got more fatties out of it and the tokens will leave the field then!. -> Armada Wurm costs less, has more devotion towards your gods Karametra, God of Harvests, Heliod, Sun-Crowned and the token sticks

Zendikar Farguide Unplayable mediocre evasion. no synergy. Thats just bulk. -> replace this with Thragtusk with the same cost you get a token and life gain

Impervious Greatwurm is strictly MORE-WIN. -> Instead of a meaningless fatty I would include a fatty that helps at least your creatures and tokens ( If you manage to fokus on something here.. ) Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite

Nyx-Fleece Ram slow and only viable in enchantress or lifegain ( well seems you would like lifegain ) I would suggest Authority of the Consuls instead. No one want to kill Authority of the Consuls and it triggers all the time I have seen it. There is also Soul's Attendant in creature form but the enchantment is stictly better ( it sticks around as an engine )

Trudge Garden this card is just playable if you commit more to lifegain... so yeah lets do that. dont cut this anymore pls.

Conclave Guildmage This fragile setup card has no synergy rate. Token 4cmc to expensive and tapping for trample is something you will mathematically never really benefit from. I would replace it with some real oomph here -> The Great Henge ( Its really broken )

Jewel Thief is pure garbage for green ramp. You play green man. USE IT BETTER -> I would to another ramp which is also a library fix and lifegain. good ol Courser of Kruphix

Heal the Scars is way to expensive to hold back for a battle trick. Unplayable. -> If you want stuff like that I would let it die and play -> Momentous Fall. Can also be used If it would die in your combat step.

Mirariis unplayable here. dead card. That fits in a blue wizard spellslinger/artifact deck consider the very versatile Knight of Autumn

There is Blossoming Sands or Graypelt Refuge to have more chance of lifegain triggers

Trelasarra, Moon Dancer as far as the math went ( or is ) you dont get any meaningfull recursive life but you can try him would not cut him anymore.

Second Harvest This is a card just playable if you commit 100% towards tokens. Dont make the deck bad Instead of a WINMORE play WIN. You dont want to pay 4mana for cloning one or two 1/1 or 2/2 tokens -> I would replace it with Archangel of Thune

Growing Ranks This is a card just playable if you commit 100%% towards tokens. you could replace it with some of the horses like Crested Sunmare

Knotvine Paladin maybe you misread this it does not get a +1/+1 counter it just gets +1/+1 until end of turn. This card has no synergy anf if you think it gets big because of all the creatures you have then its MORE-WIN - replace it with some protection (lacking in the deck) Heroic Intervention

Loxodon Smiter this card is just a vanilla 4/4 for you No one lets you discard this there is no reason for it replace it with protection (lacking in the deck Teferi's Protection

Murasa Rootgrazer only viable for a landfall deck. - replace with more protection Dauntless Escort note that sac: is instant speed when i is on the field.

Chatterstorm unplayable. this is no storm/spellslinger deck at all. Random suggestion here you like mean ones like Hornet Queen dontu

I would think about

Growing Ranks This is a card just playable if you commit more towards tokens.

Spirit Link This card is a 'two for one' IF the creature dies also spirit link dies. 'two for one' is frustrating a lot.

Trudge Garden this card is just playable if you commit more to lifegain

Mirari is unplayable here. dead card. That fits in a blue wizard spellslinger/artifact deck

Chatterstorm unplayable. this is no storm/spellslinger deck at all.

Regrowth instead I would play Eternal Witness

So there's a competitive combo version of Jeleva and then there is fun Jeleva. I'm going to make suggestions based off what I think of as being more leaning towards the fun. The general idea I have in my head is to get some high cost spells exiled and cast them for free off her trigger. I haven't played much spellslinger pretty much ever but here's what I dug up. Not sure what your budget is though.

Rise of the Dark Realms, Expropriate, Worst Fears, Army of the Damned, Aminatou's Augury, In Garruk's Wake, Fevered Suspicion and Blasphemous Act.

I'd also get some more protection for Jeleva. As each time she dies and is cast again you'll lose access to everything previously exiled. Not the worst thing but it can be nice to hit a few of the spells before having to recast her. Lightning Greaves, Whispersilk Cloak, Clout of the Dominus.

If you happen to have some room a few copy effects aren't bad ideas. Mirari and Lithoform Engine.

Metallurgic Summonings and Wild-Magic Sorcerer seem like solid inclusions too.

Do you have a clear vision of how the deck wins? Regardless the deck looks fun!

Ah the ol' thrum thrum! I can see how that can be big.

3x38 is only 114 though, so wondering how you'd kill off a 3x40=120 typical pod table (usually with a lifegain player in there somewhere) in the same turn?

Could probably drop 2 lands to add 2 more Dragon's Approach or even better one of the spell doubling artifacts or Pyromancer's Gauntletthat you can tutor out like Spellweaver Helix, Mirari, Twinning Staff, Pyromancer's Goggles or a storm finisher like a Grapeshot or Galvanic Relay or Fiery Encore or Ignite Memories or something?

Or maybe Feldon of the Third Path to copy out Hoarding Dragon from the yard?

Chaos Warp is a little over your budget, but a solid addition.

Growth Spiral is fun to copy.

Crop Rotation fetches non-basics.

Hunter's Insight is great card-draw.

Your elves should give you the mana for Hunting Pack.

Increasing Vengeance or any other copy effect is always fun to copy.

Sprouting Vines is great for grabbing your basics.

Unleash Fury is a straight upgrade (costs 1 mana less, and no sacrifice) Fatal Frenzy and Rush of Blood.

Mirari is a replacement for Riku’s first ability if he gets to expensive to cast.

Swarm Intelligence is a nice bonus if you end up running enough instant/sorcery to make it worthwhile.

Wilderness Reclamation is a little over-budget as well, but a great investment for this type of deck.

These suggestions all come from my Kalamax, the commander-damage, hence the instant heavy suggestions. And the commander himself could be fun in this deck as well.

For some reason my phone keeps having the page crash on your post.

The average result on a single d12 roll is 6.5. because we can't deal in half-rolls, we can assume one will be a 6 and one will be a 7.

So for 7mv, you are theoretically able to, on average, deal 6 damage to each creature "for free". The issue, however, is that for an average to be realized, multiple rolls must be made. In EDH, you get to cast this spell once unless you have ways to copy it or recur it.

Yes, you can roll a 1 and a 3. You can also roll a 12 and a 12.

Consider it like this, 50% of the time your roll is less than average (6 or less) and 50% of the time your roll is more than average (7 or greater) on any one roll. Now people can say that your chances of, say, rolling two 10s are drastically lower than rolling one 10, and while mathematically this is true, your first and second roll have no barring on each other. How you roll on your first die is not going to have any effect on your second die.

This is the type of card you'd want to run in gimmick decks to take advantage of copying it. Krark, the Thumbless would be a good Commander but you'd want to be in Izzet at minimum to really take advantage of everything, such as Ral, Storm Conduit, Mirari, Double Vision, Swarm Intelligence, etc.

Generating infinite mana in Izzet is easy so these high MVs are not difficult to attain. But then you must ask why you aren't playing something larger to just win the game?

Also Pixie Guide is worth a shout-out there...

My opinion? It's a fun D&D themed card for a fun D&D Precon and nothing more. Doesn't have a whole lot of utility outside of that setting. Even something like Charmbreaker Devils barely assists you as you could pull anything else you might have in the deck.

So you need to ask yourself: Are you playing to have fun, or to win? If you are playing to win, the card is a shim for your wobbly table. If you're playing to have fun, fun is subjective; If you enjoy it, it's as valuable as Dockside Extortionist.
