In Soviet Alara, zoo pets you.

The first EDH deck I ever played was the Mayael precon. Back then, I wasn't as familiar with interaction. I also focused way too heavily on huge "scary" creatures like Avacyn and the Eldrazi titans, not realizing that a lot of cheaper and less "scary" creatures actually provided more value to the deck. Besides, they're also actually castable compared to things like Kozilek that cost just short of 1,000,000 mana.

The goal of the deck is simple. Ramp, play Mayael, hold up mana, use her ability on my last opponent's turn, and hope I hit something with 5+ power. Once I can do so, I start swinging. That's it. There's nothing else to this deck. Go tall and smash.

I significantly increased the amount of interaction and ramp in the deck from the original iteration so many years ago. This deck isn't going to be making any huge plays at instant speed, but it should be able to protect itself well enough in mid-power pods.

I'm running fewer creatures with 5+ power than most Mayael decks because I wanted this to be a bit more random. I designed this for the upper end of low-power to the lower end of mid-power, so losing some consistency is fine. I make up for it with tutors, being able to actually cast a fair number of my creatures, and Seedborn Muse.

Chopping Block

  • Lyra Dawnbringer: I cut a few angels, so her buff isn't relevant. It wasn't really relevant before. She's just a weaker Baneslayer Angel.
