Questing Phelddagrif Discussion

Alright, time to make it budget. I can probably take out Phelddagrif as he doesn't help the deck and is a little expensive. His questing cousin, here just for flavor, can go too. As mentionned, Rubinia Soulsinger would fit the deck better as a commander anyway; she's also under a dollar, which is a plus.Chasm Skulker would be the next to go - he's nice if we get draws but we don't really need big creatures (if we do we can take them with Rubinia). The one I am torn about is Luminarch Ascension. It is super expensive considering we need an average card cost of 0.50$, but it is super aligned with what we want to do. We have to find another win condition as we cannot rely on Azor's Elocutors alone. Here, BudgetMTGDecks helps us again with a nice infinite damage combo in blue: using Aphetto Alchemist as an untap engine with Illusionist's Bracers and Prodigal Sorcerer is a nice way to win and takes the 3 spots we just freed so there we go.-Phelddagrif-Questing Phelddagrif-Chasm Skulker-Luminarch Ascension+Rubinia Soulsinger+Aphetto Alchemist+Illusionist's Bracers+Prodigal Sorcerer

Okay, so I do realize you ask for possible cuts, but I've honestly got too many things to list option-wise to say where a cut could/should be made. Some examples of options you may have missed:

Weird Harvest, Mana Flare, Dictate of Karametra, Howling Mine, Heartwood Storyteller, Shizuko, Caller of Autumn, Skullwinder, Horn of Greed, Helm of Awakening, Spectral Searchlight, Primal Vigor, Seed the Land, Bubble Matrix, Flux, Beacon of Immortality, Dawnbreak Reclaimer, Liege of the Hollows, Ghosts of the Innocent, Pulsemage Advocate, Orzhov Advokist, Wishmonger, Tangleroot. Storm Cauldron, Grove of the Burnwillows, Mikokoro, Center of the Sea, Geier Reach Sanitarium, Arbiter of Knollridge, Dakra Mystic, Concordant Crossroads, and

(my last two to mention that I cannot believe YOU don't even mention them how could you possibly have missed these and I'm metaphorically running out of air here)

Phelddagrif and Questing Phelddagrif.

whew. Okay, firstly I do not do "tldr" summaries, so I'm afraid you'll have to sift through the above the slow way (which that isn' even an exhaustive list btw).

Secondly, to help you sift through the above I would ask is there a specific manner in which you are wanting to help people? Do you like seeing certain gameplans win or hate others? By example is that I can see some cards like Hive Mind being too helpful possibly towards "storm" decks, but if you're playing a catch-all type of group hug then that's no big deal.

Another idea is are you into fringe group hug effects? By which I mean playing Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth just to help everyone mana fix that uses black. Or even playing Ink-Treader Nephilim in tandem with say Tempt with Reflections to give everybody an extra copy of literally every creature on their board and them some. Heck, if you ran Rite of Replication you could let everyone have EVERY creature on the board. The nephilim isn't directly a group hug card here but it has the potential to hug. Kinda like Guided Passage no?

Just some food for thought. ;D

Ok, chaosumbreon87, I hope you're still out there. I've got the deck as you initially drew it up put together, and tested it a little bit. I will hopefully get to play it this weekend in a big group game. Of the cards you mentioned above, I do like the idea of adding Font of Mythos. I'll have to look and see if I have an Anvil of Bogardan lying around.

Now, I wait ever so patiently for Phelddacombo. I think what I might do is start another thread on that one, and list the cards I do have that I was considering for the deck before your other suggestions. I do know I have a Questing Phelddagrif to go into it, along with some other stuff to consider.

Hmm, I'm not really sure. One the one hand, Questing Phelddagrif can hit for a lot more (because of his pump ability), but on the other hand, Phelddagrif can bounce and can benefit from the lands I have that buff legendary creatures.

I know lots of group hug decks prefer Questing Phelddagrif because you can let opponent's draw cards without bouncing him, but I'm not sure in a more aggressive Group Hug deck.

I can try to fit both in, but I don't really know what to cut, since this is just a prototype deck atm.

Wouldn't Phelddagrif be better than Questing Phelddagrif?

@TheRedGoat: Well, there are different options for survival.

Token specific mass removal: Ratchet Bomb, Engineered Explosives, Illness in the Ranks, Zealous Persecution

Protection from being attacked: Ghostly Prison, Propaganda, Sphere of Safety, Silent Arbiter, Crawlspace, Ensnaring Bridge, Magus of the Moat, Blazing Archon and probably some more.

Stuff that gives you life: Soul Warden, Soul's Attendant, Auriok Champion, basically look at Soul Sisters decks...

Stuff that hurts your opponent: Blood Seeker, Blood Artist, Massacre Wurm, Suture Priest, Rakdos Charm

Stuff that puts tokens into play for your opponent: Forbidden Orchard, Alliance of Arms, Mercy Killing, Varchild's War-Riders the Hunted cycle

Honestly, I don't think this would work as a RGx Commander. Both black and white cards are important and there aren't that much cards that put tokens on your opponent's board. Either wait for a WUBR commader, or go 5-color or run Phelddagrif with emphasis on its first ability. This also gives you access to Questing Phelddagrif.

Thanks for the +1!
