Deck Upgraded

PithyMarrow, 7 years ago

I thought I should upgrade this deck to what the current version is.

-1 Kokusho +1 Altar of the Brood

Kokusho is a fun card but I've felt like there are too many high end CMC cards. Altar of the brood is another card that pairs with sidisi

Adding in Ledgewalker

Deputy_Cofax, 7 years ago

I'm still testing this, but I'm thinking I might drop 2 Fleecemane Lion for 2 Silhana Ledgewalker since it comes with free Hexproof and a better version of Flying.

TNM and Game Day Updates

razelfark, 7 years ago

Sorry for not getting around to updating the Game Day results till just now. Life got a little complicated over the last couple days, but now you also get the update from my shops Tuesday Night Magic standard event as well. The Saturday game day had some disappointing results because I kept forgetting to fix the mana base from when I rushed the deck together last week Tuesday. The lands have now been fixed but sadly costed me a few games on Sat by having a bad balance of mana because I did not follow my deck guide I made. The new land setup worked well on Tuesday so no real complaints there except for some bad luck flooding out a couple games, but I still manage to win a number of these rounds that I flooded in. I find the deck is still a little off balance and am looking to fix this, but I am not to sure what I want to take out to fix fix the awkward feeling the deck has. Results for Game Day: 2/2 Round 1: Esper control (W/U/B) (1/2) Game 1 was loss because I drew a land I forgot to pull out from when I was rush building (Aehter Hub) and drew into the 2 copies that were floating in the deck and no black sources. While the white part of the deck performed well... I drew too many black cards to have no consistent black mana. Game 2 win thanks to Odric getting on the board and my opponent not getting a control spell for him. Game ended in 7 turns due to some early control used. Game 3 loss due to drawing only 1 swamp over 8 turns when I came across aether hub as next black source while having 4 double black cards in hand (2 from opening hand). Round 2: G/W Good Stuff (2-0) - interesting deck about using some of the best cards in white and green for mana cost. Game 1 win by playing almost completely on curve going turn 2 selfless spirit, turn 3 Drana, turn 4 Odric, turn 5 Solemn Recruit. Game 2 win after putting up a wall of first strike (Thalia, Riders, Drana) and waiting for Odric to be drawn. Wasn't able to push in because they had creatures large enough that I couldn't swing in, but small enough I could group block and win trades if he attacked. Eventually got Odric and Aetherborn on board to win game. Round 3: W/R/B Control (0-2) Game 1 loss as I got mana screwed once more with the aether hub draw. While I did get mostly white cards and was struggling a bit because of not having black mana for the black spells. I managed to get my opponent down to 4 before he reset board on me with white gearhulk. Game 2 loss but for drawing too much lands. I drew 11 lands before the round ended and was unable to stop a Giddeon from punching me in the face. Round 4: G/W Humans (2-0) Game 1 win by overwhelming him with flying lifelinkers and having Thalia work the defense. Game 2 Win because he he was discouraged to play more since he said "I am just tired" and cleaned up his cards so he could lay his head down as he waited for the promo cards. That is the end of Game Day: positioned 8th to just be eligible for the expertise promo. Tuesday results: 2/1 Smaller turn out on Tuesdays so we only had three rounds. Faced some different deck types so things were interesting. Round 1: (R/U/G) Aetherworks Marvel (2/1) Game 1 he managed to get his combo off on turn 4 to pull out a deep fiend on my turn and locked me out on mana, and turn 6 managed to activate again to get Ulamog. After 1 attack with Ulamog he managed to mil all possible control cards to I gave him the round. Game 2 side deck came through by destroying his first marvel he dropped on turn 5 with Fragmentize. I managed to pull 2 anguished unmakings for his second Marvel and exiled it and the Ulamog that came out from it. From that point on I managed to win the game thanks to having 2 Giddeon draws. Game 3 I pulled out Ob on turn 5 and was able to defend him till he ulted resulting in the win. Never thought I would need to rely on this to win but I got lucky that his Marvel he played was a dud on the search twice. Round 2: G/W Good Stuff (2/0) - basically a repeat of last match up so I am going to next round Round 3:U/R Thing Control (1/2) Game 1 I managed to pull the win thanks to some patience casting my spells to bait his burn/counters on lesser cards and try to catch him when he is tapped or to low to cast more then one card. Game 2 loss due to bad flooding issues (11 lands in ten turns). Game 3 was a close game with my opponent at 4 life at end of game. What cost me the game was some careless plays early as I walked into a 3 card loss to radiant flame that could have been omitted to 1 if I just played Watching instead of 3rd creature on turn 3. Results were 2nd place losing only to first place. The deck list now reflects a very close list of the current deck that was used on Tuesday. The lands have not changed in the list because I am now following the guideline I gave myself there and they seem to be working well. The Glint-Sleeve are currently out of the deck because I do not have any and am unsure what I would want to take out to make room for them. They were replaced by Selfless Spirits. If you have any questions or comments feel free to post and I will try to respond as soon as I can. Sorry that I have not been maintaining this as well as other decks in the past due to life getting busy.

cutting the manadorks

QKey, 7 years ago

Did it finally, i cut the manadorks. I added Life from the Loam, Mox Diamond, Stifle and Kalitas, Bloodchief of Ghet

I will see how the deck performs at my FNM. Still not confident on adding Life from the Loam since it is very slow. Maybe this is a bit to greedy and will backfire on me, because i cut 3 manasources and added a 4 drop....

-1 Dark Petition +1 True Conviction

Gisela is so great I thought I'd toss in another quasi-copy, albeit not stapled on to a massive body that can be cheated out with Kaalia. Seemed like a fun idea. Not sure Dark Petition was the right thing to cut though. We will see.

This is my first red deck, so I am working on finding cards that may be strictly better than what I have, as well as possible instant versions of sorceries.

Grixis?

kingshanks, 7 years ago

I'm debating cutting the Cathartic Reunion and switching up the mana base a little bit to support 3 Collective Brutality. I have been testing various versions of the deck and I feel like having the ability to kill creatures, drain for griselbrand, discard fatties, and most importantly rip out their interaction with the combo. Please comment with thoughts and how the mana base should be roughly constructed. Thanks!

Ughhhh

zinnarra, 7 years ago

A lot of changes because I had forgot to update the decklist here for a while.... No breakdown because I am probably revamping the whole deck to something that works very differently (See New and Tasty).

Next Phase

gambitmain, 7 years ago

After Monday night play, and after about 3 of us have had an opportunity to play this specific deck in the last few weeks, big changes are coming. Under-performing cards will be cut, and some of those sitting in the "maybe" pile will be integrated. I want this deck to have a higher emphasis on sacrifice effects and benefits. Cards like Yahenni, Undying Partisan and Viscera Seer may have a bigger part to play in the direction this deck goes.

An evaluation of the punishment effects is also forthcoming, and should be extensive. Stay tuned!

Creatures

Archangel of Tithes - I like that this is balanced, in that it works equally well when you're ahead as compared to when you're behind. There's not a "bad" time to play the Archangel, although with the state of the current mana base, triple white is no picnic, much less viable on a turn 4.

Blood Artist - Incidental damage that doesn't create too much of a target. Biggest impact has come in the form of board wipe punishment. (You killed my creatures, drain you for 14 on a full board).

Fate Unraveler - What an annoyance this is to other players. This and Kambal draw the biggest hate from opposing players, and it's not really close. The four toughness is relevant, and no matter what direction this deck takes, the Unraveler is a staple in my opinion.

Kambal, Consul of Allocation - Another card that will get you glares from across the table. He ran for four or five turns one game before anyone had a way to remove him, and it really forces opponents to consider whether they want to interact with anything on the board. (Do I hate that enchantment enough to be drained for being the one to deal with it?)

Kazuul, Tyrant of the Cliffs - Seems like he would be a good fit but has been underwhelming overall. Five mana is a lot, and I tutored for him Monday night just to see how he could impact the board. He will probably be among those cut for lighter options. CUT 2/20

Mogis, God of Slaughter - Staple. The two damage a turn makes a difference in EDH, and in crunch time it's not unheard of for people to sacrifice good value just to stay out of the red zone. By that point he's generally going to be a 7/5 indestructible god as well, so he curves nicely and provides value throughout.

Thalia, Heretic Cathar - I've only seen her a handful of times, so I don't have a lot to share. People play creatures, and people play a ton of nonbasic lands in EDH, so I'm sure her time to shine is coming.

Windborn Muse - She was added after the play testing on Monday, but as with the Archangel, it's nice to have a mix of creatures with punishment effects to supplement the enchantments (like Ghostly Prison). We will see if she proves to be redundant. ADDED 2/20

Zulaport Cutthroat - Cutting. The fact that it's your own creatures only makes a difference in this deck, where Blood Artist just completely outperforms it in every way. Aside from a token invasion (which is rare), it's not often a bunch of our creatures are going to die in a game, and a drain one is certainly not a deterrent for removal. CUT 2/20

With so much affinity around, and tons of nobles pumping with exalted, I feel like Orzhov Pontiff warrants a main board. I went down to 2 Renegade Rallier. The card is AMAZING, but sometimes I'd have it in my hand and it was basically a dead card.

I moved Spellskite to the side in favor of Tireless Tracker. I had him out of the deck completely, and then tried him in the sideboard and I just felt like I missed him a lot of the time. Spellskite game 1 usually doesn't help me too much either, since most decks don't focus on removal, and the ones that do have SO MUCH that it almost doesn't matter.
