The Umezawa family's most impressive distinction is also its most dubious: the undying enmity of the elder dragon Planeswalker Nicol Bolas. A family that has spanned multiple planes, the Umezawas have a long and vibrant history, one that, at its heart, left a lasting impact on the multiverse.

Toshiro shattered That Which Was Taken on Kamigawa, the native plane of the Umezawa family, bringing about an end to the world-changing Kami War. His descendant, Tetsuo, was the imperial champion of the ancient Nicol Bolas. They turned upon him, and defeated him. Tetsuo, the heart of the bloodline, slew the great elder dragon at the apex of his power. Though he rose again, Tetsuo's defeat of him has left a scar upon the planeswalker, and a mark upon the threads of fate across a tapestry of planes.

Since then, the Umezawa family has been subject to the utter hatred of one of the most powerful beings in the multiverse. Tetsuko, named for her famous ancestor, hides in the shadows and secrets of portal magic, slipping beneath all notice, the still sharp blade of her inherited jitte cutting the hidden strings of Bolas' plots while his eyes are cast far away.

The Umezawa Clan is a deck that celebrates the history of the Umezawa legacy through the ages. Centred around each of the three Umezawas - Tetsuo, Toshiro, and Tetsuko - this is a trickery deck with a few themes.

  • Tetsuo's Leadership: instant-speed creatures, spells and effects that allow you to hold mana with the threat of kill effects and to use it in alternative means if not forced to pull the trigger. Threat of kill effects allowing a political avenue to keeping smaller creatures unblocked for high value effects.
  • Tetsuko's Leadership: unblockability as a focus. Small creatures with strong combat-damage-to-player effects and ways to sneak them through any defences.
  • Toshiro's Leadership: an array of kill spells and cheap, useful instants to pull from the graveyard at the opportune moment.
