Round 1: A Bye. The Wrong Kind of Bye Obtained By Simply Being Late. ----------------------------------- Aka a match loss due to me not knowing Modern was at 2:45 and not 3:00. They moved the time up and I stupidly declined to check, assuming Modern was at 3:00. I arrived at 2:55. Round 2: Zoo with KotR combo ------------------ Game 1: Stuck early Traft, but declined to protect it when opponent had Tec Edge and I had my 4 colors (in the form of 3 lands) + Flooded Strand on field. I had Resto in hand but didn't use it. I could have easily won if I was okay with losing one of my colors but too much time playing controlly decks made me a little too wary about colors. Also had 2 dead Dispels stuck in hand. Kinda sucked. Got beaten to death by mana dorks + Kessig Wolf Run. Game 2: Kind of got overran pretty handily but major misplay doing Path on KotR on upkeep instead of my own main phase. I think this might have been winnable if I played correctly. My good old KotR tricks used on myself. Round 3: Jund ------------------------ Game 1: I spammed removal and counterspells until he ran out of threats, then proceeded to beat him to death with Traft. Game 2: I took a hand with Path, Path, Bolt, 3 lands, and Liliana, with no black sources. He goes T1 Fetch Shock Thoughtseize and takes Liliana. I was ultra-relieved that he chose the one card I couldn't cast. Later proceeded to kill everything he played, counter one of his own Lilianas, and then stick a Traft for the game with backup removal. Round 4: Amulet Bloom ------------------------------- Game 1: Took a shabby 6 card hand with Serum Visions, Hallowed Fountain, and Island among other uncastable cards. I figured Visions would find me another color. It didn't, and I died to Hive Mind + Summoner's Pact. Game 2: I'm on the play so I play a land and pass. He tries to play T1 Amulet, but it gets countered by none other than Annul. We kind of durdle around but I manage to counter things here and there. He tries to play Hive Mind when I have 5 mana up with Snap on field, so I play Resto flickering Snap and flashbacking the Annul. What a nasty little 1 drop counterspell. Eventually Resto and Snappy is joined by Traft, but he had just slammed me with a 8/6 double strike Titan, putting me at 2 life with him threatening lethal next turn. He's at 15 life, then plays a Radiant Fountain to up to 17 life. I have a Bolt in hand and 11 damage on the field. His Titan sat there as a nice wall. I had boarded out Helix, so the only card that would have done anything for me was a second Bolt. Luckily, that's exactly what I topdeck. I turn everything sideways and he chooses not to block with Titan because he didn't want to risk it dying, so 11 damage + double Bolt seals the game. However, even if he had blocked, I would have simply killed the Titan with double Bolt and he didn't have the backup Titan at the ready, so I would have taken the game the following turn. Game 3: He plays T1 Amulet. I Vandalblast it. He plays T2 Amulet, which sits on the field for a little bit before I KCommand it. Then he goes and plays a third Amulet, and I'm out of artifact hate. We play a long game, with him playing 3 Titans and every single one dying to Path. One notable play was Fulminator Mage killing his Slayer's Stronghold. Without the Stronghold, he was unable to give anything haste (and +2/+0 which ended up being highly relevant). I was at 4 after a double strike 6/6 Titan hit, and Azusa began beatdown with the assistance of Boros Garrison. I stabilized at 2 life after chump blocking Azusa with Vendilion Clique, where I found a convenient Bolt to pick it off. He eventually manages to drop a Chalice of the Void on 3, but not before I stick 2 more Fulminator Mages. He's at 29 life after numerous bounces of the Radiant Fountain, but due to the length of the game, I had gotten pretty flooded as the game durdled along, with Colonnade rumbling. He copied my Colonnade with Vesuva, then gave it double strike to attempt blocking my Colonnade, but I had Fulminator to blow it up. I eventually found a Snapcaster just as he found a third Titan, flashbacking Path. The turn before he would have died, at 5 life, he found Summoner's Pact (with at least 20 mana on the field) and the Dispel I had in hand with my last mana open countered it to finally finish the game. We went about 20 minutes overtime, but it was the last round of the event, so it wasn't a problem.

Oh, Iona...

Siq6Six, 9 years ago

Iona, Shield of Emeria is one of this decks biggest weaknesses, as is the case with all mono colored decks. My opponents have played her naming "white" when they could affect more of the board state naming another color, enough times that I feel it's time to make changes. Granted, I've pulled my own copy as I feel she's just a bit too "unfun". Part of me hopes the others will do the same.

The only way I could stay in the game is if I pulled All is Dust, Argentum Armor or Worldslayer to remove her, or Quicksilver Amulet to circumvent. More often then not it was a "draw, go" situation.

So I'm going to bring in Duplicant, Karn Liberated and/or Spine of Ish Sah. If that's not enough, I'll make room for Oblivion Stone. Not sure what-for-what tho.

Another change I'm considering is Intervention Pact. I haven't seen Curse of Echoes or Hive Mind in so long. As hilarious as it'd been, it seems like a poor decision to dedicate a card slot to the off chance I come across them again. Celestial Purge, however, can come in damn handy.

My LGS is running a "Summer of the Lotus" tournament. All formats over the next couple months. There will be an overall points system. Whoever comes out on top will win a (damaged) Black Lotus. Other prizes on the line are ABUR Dual lands, box of modern masters, packs and other stuff. The EDH side is supposed to be 4 player F4A pods. I'm not playing standard, so I'm SoL on those points. I'm still hoping to score something. I'll be playing this, or a variant of Kaalia of the Vast. I'm also going to be in all the modern tournaments I can be with my UW Gifts Tron deck as well as drafts.

Anyways, it'll be interesting. I may have to spend more time playing Kaalia for the summer. We'll have to see what kind of decks start showing up. If we get a lot of degenerate combo decks, or fun casuals show up? As long as I have fun, I don't care if I win.

New Year Cleaning

IustitiaRex, 9 years ago

So today we're doing a small-big change to the list. I'm removing the wishboard in favor of actually running cards in the deck (Wishes aren't searchable by any affect and realistically I want like... 1 or 2 things every single time). Out: Living Wish / Glittering Wish In: Dragonlord Dromoka (Solid card, always good, able to pod into it from Karametra). In: Sylvan Caryatid (2 cmc dork, taps for either, more earlygame and gives a useable body to pod into 3's easier). --- Out: Polukranos went in a while ago, I haven't even let him hit the field, he never gets tutored for, and I never need to tutor for it. In: Freyalise, Llanowar's Fury. Draw, Artifact Enchantment Removal, and Draw. There are probably better planeswalkers to use, especially considering that she won't get to ult very often (I could just run Shamanic Revelation), but I want to give her a try. Other considerations are for Elspeth, Sun's Champion. or Emeria Shepherd: Seems like a good card. We run no way to directly break her or go infinite, but recurring a piece of removal or an important creature is never a bad thing. The direct reanimation is icing. --- Out: Winding Canyons In: Mirrorpool (with OGW coming soon). Good land to recur.

A Few Swaps

RedCloakedCrow, 9 years ago

I finally stopped being a dumbass and took Grapeshot and Empty the Warrens out of my deck. In addition, I removed the Sapphire Medallion. I may put in a Helm of Awakening at a later date, remains to be seen. The cards entering the deck are Wheel of Fortune, Hurkyl's Recall and Visions of Beyond. My logic on these adds follows: Wheel of Fortune is another wheel effect to use with Notion Thief. Nuff said. Hurkyl's Recall is great in two functions. It can stop an artifact deck from comboing out easily, and can help me increase my storm count and generate mana. I beat a Nin deck the other day by bouncing all of her artifacts after she tapped out to draw 9 cards. The player had a grip of 20 cards, not enough mana to win or lock me, and ended up scooping. I also love dropping all of my mana gaining/mana neutral artifacts after targeting myself, adding to the rising Storm. visions of Beyond is a sketchy card. I'm trying it out, since it can theoretically turn into an Ancestral Recall if I'm playing a GY-combo deck, or if I'm deep into a storm turn. Its in there for testing, and may come out later.

Solid Deck

redsquirrel63, 9 years ago

I wish I would have been updating this deck from the beginning. The concept has always stayed the same, but it has seen a lot of cards come and go. The most recent change has been to sub in Sylvan Caryatid for Rattleclaw Mystic. Choice being because my friends burn was destroying my mana rampers which made it really hard to get my dragons out before I did get burned. Surely the hexproof rampers with help. Plus, now they can provide me white mana as well. Still waiting on two Thunderbreak Regents which should push this deck to the next level. Not quite sure what they'll replace yet.

===accordion ===panel: Round Results

Round 1: (Burn), Win 2-1, Lost game one with opponent at 4, Game two land Sorin, Solemn Visitor while at 1 and went back to 9, Oppenent conceded next turn. Game three Kor Firewalker did some serious work blocking attacks and forcing difficult choices for oppenent because of the life gain. Near loss due to serious mistake last turn. Had oppenent at one with an Eidolon of the Great Revel and me at 5, mistakenly traded with a token instead of just taking the hit since Eidolon of the Great Revel prevented him from casting and Kor Firewalker ensured me the win. Won't make that mistake again. First ever game against Burn

Round 2: (Infect), Loss 0-2, Game one was turn 3. Had no removal in hand. Game two lost to top deck back up protection spell for Inkmoth Nexus while Wild Defiance was in play.

Round 3: (Lantern Control), Loss 0-2, Scooped once opponent had Ensnaring Bridge and no cards since I have no main board artifact removal, Game two a turn two Stony Silence let me actually play but lost to a third Ensnaring Bridge that was a lucky 5th card on Ancient Stirrings First ever game against Lantern Control

Round 4: (U/R Twin), Win 2-1, Lost game won to Snapcaster Mage/Pestermite beat downs. Couldn't keep enough tokens to go on the aggressive. Was funny to see opponent's face after turn one Blood Cryptfoil/Thoughtseize turn two Windswept Heath since he initially thought I was a Jund deck. After Sideboard I went more control and won both through slow beat downs and ensuring he could never land the combo. Ironic to be controlling since twin normally does that and does it better, but the game 3 Rending Volley was rather nice since he hadn't yet figured out why I had red in the deck. Stopped his last attempt at the combo and allowed for the kill next turn. First ever win against Twin, love the red splash

Round 5: (Infect), Win 2-0, Got game one after getting first creature through discard and only other through removal. Game two opponent was stranded on land. Land one Pendelhaven land two fetch for Breeding Poolfoil, between discard and removal and opponent's mulligan he didn't have much. Turn five top decked Ghost Quarter while having 4 lands in play with red source and Crumble to Dust in hand. Played Ghost Quarter then targeted Breeding Poolfoil with Crumble to Dust. Opponent scooped.

Round 6: (Abzan Company) Loss 1-2, Won game one in fair creature fight. Lost Game two to removal. Lost game three in turns to Chord of Calling for 4 into Cartel Aristocrat + Melira, Sylvok Outcast + Murderous Redcap combo. First ever game against Abzan Company

Round 7 (Grishoalbrand) Loss 0-2, Game one I game it my best effort since I've never seen the deck before. Fully blocked Borborygmos Enraged and took full hit from Worldspine Wurm I believe was turn 4. Lost next turn to 3x token:5/5 Wurm and another Borborygmos Enraged. Lost game two on turn 4 to the full combo and oppenent drawing virtually their entire deck. First ever game against Grishoalbrand

Dropped after round 7 with 3-4 record.

===panel: Possible Deck Changes

Current updates being considered after this event:

1st: Out one Spectral Procession for one Surgical Extraction Very often it was the Spectral Processions that I removed for sideboard and Surgical Extraction can work quite well when combined with our discard spells. (Land updates) Out 2x Godless Shrinefoil, 1x Swamp, In Sacred Foundryfoil, Ghost Quarter, and Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth. Help get another land destruction source while keeping mana base colors intact. Add 3rd red source to help ensure availability.

2nd: Remove Myth Realized for Surgical Extraction and 3x Spectral Procession for 3x Auriok Champion. Auriok Champion would give us more main board help against twin and jund, and potentially help prevent Murderous Redcap combo. (Land updates) Out one Godless Shrinefoil and Vault of the Archangel, In Sacred Foundryfoil and Ghost Quarter. Able to give up a Vault of the Archangel for land destruction since we have Auriok Champion to help with life gain.

Finished!

amazingdan, 9 years ago

I finally got my deck to a finished state. This is not finalized, as I'm sure there is room for improvement, but it's a good milestone. Thank you to everybody who helped me get here, and I hope you can continue helping me as new sets come out.

Land to Bounce

Something I noticed...

NoFuneral, 9 years ago

Kiora has a new function as bait, in addition to the others. Every time, the opponent attacks Kiora, dumps his hand, and gets victimized by Ugin.

I win at life!

Hissysnake8, 9 years ago

There was a problem with the MPCI (mana per square inch), so I did myself of the lair lands to make way for my bounce lands! Why didn't I do this before?

FNM#3

sylvannos, 9 years ago

Didn't make top 8 due to misplays and bad tiebreakers. Here were the results:

Round One: U/W Midrange-- 1-2
Round Two: Shared Fate-- 2-1 (really close games and this guy's deck was awesome...I might have to build it myself)
Round Three: G/B Goryo's Vengeancefoil-- 2-0
Round Four: U/G Infect-- 0-2
Round Five: Griselshoal-- 2-1
