Today I have completed the set of Goblin Guides and Eidolons of the Great Revel. The only thing I am missing are some fetchlands. Perhaps I can even turn this into a Naya Burn deck.

January 2016 Changes

TauralCW, 9 years ago

Taking into account some of the suggestions made I've taken a bit of the clunky, slower milling cards in an attempt to speed the deck up a bit. It's still susceptible to aggro decks, but hopefully the changes will help to address this, especially in focussing the sideboard a lot more rather than just putting in 10 random cards with the same effects to cards already in the main deck. I've also spent a little more time on the mana base in an attempt to speed it up as there were too many 'into play tapped' cards, which added to the clunkiness. Thanks to everyone for the suggestions so far.

Update 3: Scytheclaw

LtMattmoo, 9 years ago

With the introduction of Scytheclaw in the recent Commander expansion, how could I not update this deck?

-2 Quietus Spike, +2 Scytheclaw

Quietus Spike was cheaper to get out without a Stoneforge Mystic and it granted deathtouch for Mortarpod shenanigans but it wasn't a living weapon.

Sorin, yay!

Added second Sorin, Solemn Visitor, four Godless Shrinefoil and updated the list with random modifications I did.

3-1 WOOT WOOT

echo9999, 9 years ago

Happy 2016, my friends! This is the overview of the most recent FNM results.

Round 1: 2-0

Round 1 was somewhat funny in that it was a matchup against mardu horde. Yup there were four Butcher of the Hordes along with Bloodsoaked Champions and Monastery Mentors. First game , I just managed to overpower him pretty easily since Bant Scales is pretty relentless. Game2 I sideboarded in my remaining silkwraps, dropped the negates (which left me more susceptible to Crackling Dooms but it didn't really matter, and added in my Abzan Falconers in. With a single Swift Kick the victory was mine for the taking. A great way to start off the night!

Round 2: 1-1-1?!?!?

OK so to start, we all have had those games where the maturity of the opponent is that of a 6 or 7 year old. This was this game. The deck he was playing was some variation on abzan midrange. Game 1 I lost due to an inability to keep up with its pace as I let a Warden of the First Tree get huge with no end game in mind. In addition, after the Siege Rhinos started hitting, I had no idea how to win as I had to waste an Avatar of the Resolute as a chump blocker. Pretty lame. So I got completely dismantled game 1. Game 2 was a collosal win on my end. I loaded up those Silkwraps, sideboarded in my clash of wills in exchange for my Stubborn Denials and Negates, and everything worked out great. We landed a Managorger Hydra which I evaded removal with Feat of Resistance and managed to control the board long enough to hit lethal. Now here's the fun part. He was planning on going all night without losing a round. So, he gave me the next game win and angrily dropped the tournament. Ladies and gentlemen, we have our first hater.

Round 3: 1-2

Nooooo! we hit our loss here so I will try and be as detailed as possible. This deck was abzan agro. At first, he landed a Warden of the First Tree and a Bloodsoaked Champion. Naturally, I had the Silkwraps in hand. And we won round 1 after a Managorger Hydra ripped through his defenses. Easy peasy right? Wrong. Then came the sideboarding. My opponent sideboarded out all of his Bloodsoaked Champions for Self-Inflicted Wounds and I go ripped to pieces. I couldn't establish a hefty board presence because I kept sacrificing off everything that could dish out some damage. Game 3 I re-evaluated and sideboarded in everything that could possibly counter the wounds in exchange for my Feat of Resistances. Unfortunately we couldn't hit anything meaningful fast enough to stop the swarm of sacking. I had a blast during this round though as my opponent was a really funny guy. SHOUTOUT TO FUNNY OPPONENT GUY! I LOVE YOU!

Round 4: swift 2-0

Okay, so this game was against one of my pretty good friends (he shares the same name as me for Christ sake xD). Tonight he was running an Atarka's Command landfall deck. Game 1 was easy peasy. Bant beatdown overpowered his field and my Dromoka's Commands seemed to be much more useful than his Atarka's Commands. After some hefty removal and some board presence, my Abzan Falconers ensured a pretty quick victory. Here comes the fun part. Game 2: The epic lands. Both him and I kept top-decking lands. We counted. We didn't miss a single land drop for 11 turns. By the end we were both in tears from laughter since it was some fluke in the universe that BOTH OF US were severly mana swamped. Eventually though, I casted a Managorger Hydra which did nothing since he kept top decking lands. Then I managed to cough up some Hardened scales and the poor guy was dead. Great game though. Not sure I have ever laughed as hard as I did that day in any competitive magic ever (Well maybe when I faced the Day's Undoing Bonded Construct deck at the Origins prerelease xD).

So what did we learn?

Magic is all about learning after all. So here are some things I noticed.

  1. Hangarback Walkers are practically useless in this deck! everytime I would play a HBW, 1 of 3 things would happen. One scenario is that it gets Silkwraped and it was a waste of buffing. Another scenario is that the HBW was pointless since I had a massive Managorger Hydra with trample on the field. The last scenario is that the HBW was good enough to win, which was pretty rare. As a result, I'm cutting the Hangarback Walkers for now.

  2. we need some better protocol for big creatures. Typically my Dromoka's Commands are good enough to "control" the opponent's field as I swing in. I am thinking that maybe we should add in Suspension Fields or something of that caliber in the sideboard just in case. Alternatively, we could find some deathtouchers who's only goal is to fight huge creatures.

  3. maybe we could use some lifelinkers too. I'm thinking 2 Lantern Scouts and 2 abzan battlepriests in the sideboard. That way rather than sideboarding in the Abzan Falconer in some matchups, we could give more stuff lifelink for those grindy-er games. Even in the late game, failure is not an option.

Woot woot! didn't have to go against a single jace!

If you read all of this, you are a trooper. Leave a comment or a +1 (if you like the deck) and thank you guys for being awesome!

I love you all!

Oh boy it's been a while!

Moobu, 9 years ago

So, looking over this list, I'm thinking that the Nivix Cyclops are kind of dead weight and don't really add to being a fallback ender like I originally planned. That being said, I'm going to remove both and rotate more protection in for the Kiln Fiends. Namely a pair of Swiftfoot Boots and probably at least 1 Mizzium Skin. Thoughts?

Thoughts from Barely Grixis

ejectbutton, 9 years ago

Been switching to Grixis for 2x Kolaghan's Command, 2x Terminate, and 1x Murderous Cut, and like it a lot. If I were to go back to UR, I would want to make these changes. Or at least, here are my thoughts on UR as a whole.

Dispel: 2x Maindeck, 1x Sideboard

Dispel is fantastic against certain decks, but not as much against others. I was initially on the 3x Maindeck hype, but 2 main 1 board feels better. It allows me to side into 'all in on the combo' for bad matchups, with heavy combo protection.

Jace, Vryn's Prodigy  Flip: 2x Maindeck; Grim Lavamancer: 1x Maindeck

Grim Lavamancer won me quite a few games, but I'm not entirely sure that they were games that Jace wouldn't have had the same type of impact. The only matchup I can say for sure that Lavamancer is better in is Infect, which combined with its overall utility earns its spot in the main. Jace, however, takes over so many games that are otherwise terrible that I really like having it as a 2-of.

Vandalblast: 2x Sideboard; Ancient Grudge: 0x Sideboard

While I have Jace in the deck, I like Vandalblast even more than I did previously. I was essentially jamming Ancient Grudge because other people were, but actually never had the flashback be relevant. By cutting green, the mana becomes much easier too. Vandalblast already comes down a turn earlier than Grudge, which can be vital on the draw against T1 Amulet of Vigor or Cranial Plating, but it also allows us to overload it with Jace later in the game against affinity (or Lantern Control, I guess. But early Jace makes that matchup much better anyway). Going back to basics.

Spell Snare: 1x Maindeck

Fine, okay? FINE. Spell Snare isn't TERRIBLE. I see why it's alright now. Tried 2x in Grixis, and I think I'll try 1 in both builds for now on. When it's good, it's freaking great, but the bad comes up way too often for me to want 2, when I could otherwise have some other form of interaction.

Twisted Image: 2x Maindeck

BBD at SCGCIN inspired this change. I actually added the first copy because of BBD's take on the deck as well, but every time I drew the card, even when it didn't kill something, felt fine. When it did kill something (Noble Hierarch, Jace, Vryn's Prodigy  Flip, Spellskite, and Signal Pest to name a few), the card felt broken. I could easily see myself going up a copy, and I told everyone I could that it felt like the best card in the deck. A cantrip that can double as a kill spell is a great card.

Final Note: Electrolyze: 61st Maindeck

If I can ever find room for the card, I would love to add an Electrolyze to the maindeck. It doesn't make sense to put it in the sideboard, but it's really good. I just feel everything else in the deck is things that I want to be doing, and it's the one card that can be cut. A 2nd Cryptic Command would be okay, but 4 mana counterspell is real awkward sometimes.

Flying Protection

Wiinsomniacs, 9 years ago

Removed Gravity Well for Spidersilk Armor. Spidersilk is functionally better as it buffs creatures and gives them reach, instead of the Well just removing flying and making me the target of flying based decks, since they couldn't attack anyone. Spidersilk should hopefully give me the one sided protection I need.

UPDATE

Claevyan, 9 years ago

So.. I've decided to remove Blackmail from the deck since it's the most dependable card in it, and ad 2 copies of Phyrexian Obliterator instead, thx Mogis_Mtg for the advice! :)

PS: I forgot to mention how great Sword of Light and Shadow can be since it can bring back Fulminator Mage :)

Release 3

Gerst, 9 years ago

Since the second release of this list, the following change has been made:

Hedron Archivefoil > Seething Song

This is a trial change. Hedron Archivefoil has never been a card I liked much due to its speed, so I'm trying out the ritual as an additional source of acceleration and due to its synergy with Past in Flamesfoil.
