Update

Zaueski, 8 years ago

Testing has been going very well.

  • I took out Declaration in Stone for Blessed Alliance, the card draw I was giving them kept biting me in the butt. Once I switched it, it ran a lot smoother.

  • Now that I've gotten to playtest a little bit I decided to give a little and go up to 25 lands. I'm not going to 26 however because so far, all of the games that I couldn't get a 6th land in a reasonable amount of time I had Chandra, Torch of Defiance for ramp.

  • I dropped 4 lands for 4 Aether Hubs and the mana fixing issue has practically melted away so I definitely think that Evolving Wilds is no longer necessary.

Thank you everyone for all the feedback and hopefully I can continue to fine tune this deck until its great.

I'm trying to find ways to fit in Eerie Interlude, more Panharmonicons and Some kind of reanimation that's more repetitive than Lili. I was think Demon of Dark Schemes, but I don't know what to cut.

Some Kaladesh Tweaking

Beebles, 8 years ago

I've added some cards to this deck due to the Kaladesh release. I had a hard look at some other cards as well. Noxious Gearhulk, Filigree Familiar and Concealed Courtyard were easy includes. I'm also going to give Fumigate a try over Decree of Pain. Later I realized Rune-Scarred Demon should be in this deck over Enlightened Tutor. Also, I acquired a Gisela, the Broken Blade  Meld now the price has gone down and decided to cut the last unfair-EDH-life-total-card in the deck: Divinity of Pride. Lastly, I'm considering to get a Kaya, Ghost Assassin for this deck.

Number Crunch

jtforkner, 8 years ago

So, I have been gold fishing the deck to test numbers in a vacuum and recording the data here: http://https://drive.google.com/open?id=11zzlQ5lxHORe5rPRfZdweYjmtKMeAqH9xhIXwD_tckM As I recorded the results I realized there was relevant information I was leaving out so as you read the tables you will notice over time I added new sections to include as much relevant information as I could in a readable form. I really like my numbers so far, though there are a could of things I have concluded: 1.) My lands are in a good spot, I rarely run into a situation where I only have the opposite color mana from what I need. 2.) My sideboard probably doesn't need Gideon in it, but I'm not ready to replace him yet.

The Brewing Continues!

ComputerizedMTG, 8 years ago

The first change is, yet again, the title. Just going to leave it as Esper Control until the deck evolves to a point where the title needs to be more specific.

Now that the not so important update is out of the way, here are the changes to the main.

So regrettably I am going to cut Emrakul, the Promised End from the deck. He may come back later down the line as the format settles, but going fresh into rotation the meta will likely be populated by aggro decks. That means that with only 1 copy and no discard outlets the deck can no longer cast this efficiently, so for now it needs to go.

Another card that, oddly enough, is not that great is Cataclysmic Gearhulk. This guy is better suited for mid-range decks that are facing a board that wants to go wide but at the same time they don't want to completely wipe their field. I already have 4 total boardwipes, 3 in the main and 1 in the side, so this guy is overkill. Not to mention that ideally I want to have multiple walkers out so forcing myself to get rid of my main advantage engines would be slightly counter productive.

Those two will be replaced by two copies of Jace, Unraveler of Secrets. He is a card I have been wanting to try and a card a couple of users have suggested, so might as well add him in.

Not sure how good or bad this change might be, especially without having tested the deck at all, but I am going to remove two copies of Declaration in Stone to move both copies of Harsh Scrutiny in the main. As stated the format will likely see a whole lot of aggressive decks in the first few weeks so Harsh Scrutiny seems pretty decent, it also answers Emrakul & Ulamog without letting to opponent get the on-cast trigger;. However, I still like Declaration and want to keep one copy in the main.

I am also going to cut Glimmer of Genius down to 2 copies so I can add a second Anguished Unmaking, just so I can have more catch-all answers in the main, and I feel like with 5 card draw spells + the walkers that I will have plenty of card advantage that cutting down a copy of Glimmer shouldn't impact me too much if at all.

I am starting to want to make room in the main for Revolutionary Rebuff, but at this time I still don't think it's great and I feel like tempo decks can probably make better use of this than a control deck could.

Now for some changes to the sideboard.

Going to replace Descend upon the Sinful with a copy of Fumigate. This is another card that without discard outlets loses value.

To fill up the 2 slots that were made by moving Harsh Scrutiny to the main, I am going to slot in Gideon, Ally of Zendikar. Gideon is neat against a good chunk of decks, so why not have him ready to join his fellow walker buddies when the occasion calls for him.

I guess, I will also list changes to the maybeboard as it might help guide those that might offer suggestions to the deck in the direction that I want the deck to take.

No longer considering Reflector Mage and Spell Queller to be used in the deck simply because I will wipe the field multiple times and those two cards, Queller in particular for obvious reasons, just become worse if you don't take advantage of the tempo they created by using them as threats. Again, these are cards that are great for tempo but as good for control.

Diabolic Tutor is also no longer in my mind. The card might be decent in certain matches to be able to grab the threat you need, but the fact that it doesn't give you the ability to cast whatever you grabbed the same turn like Dark Petition could, makes the card a not so likely consideration.

That's it for the changes so far. I plan on touching up the current land base as well to match the new changes, just not right now.

As always, all suggestions are welcome :)

I have the deck irl now

I've gotta say its been a great success! I often exhaust my hand after a few turns, I almost feel like I went overboard with the mana ramp! Glad the commander is there to restock my hand when I need it. The Deadeye-sea monster combo has been working just as intended, Deadeye and his combo buddies (Great Whale, Gulf Squid, etc.) are definitely what need to be tutored for when you can. One time I basically played my entire deck from my hand, it was ridiculous! I've had the most success with the deck when facing one-on-one rather than multiplayer. While the chaos this deck can have in multiplayer can be fun, it really just paints a big target on your face, and you can get shut down fast. Also beware token decks, if you can't get a return-to-hand creature out on the battlefield fast enough, you'll be overwhelmed. Especially if the tokens are flyers.

Revamps

WarrKing, 8 years ago

Revamped the whole deck a bit. Removed a lot of the "clutter" spells. Tried to focus a lot more on pure creature spam. If this deck is going to win, its going to win with speed. Considering adding in Bolts along side the Hunts...

Changelog 9-21-2016

DocG, 8 years ago

-Endless One, Arcbound Ravager. Origin Spellbomb, Torrential Gearhulk, Beseech the Queen, Coalition Relic Open the Vaults, Null Profusion, Salvaging Station

+Semblance Anvil, Angel's Grace, Vedalken Orrery, Mystical Tutor, Elsewhere Flask, Dramatic Reversal, Paradoxical Outcome, Reshape, Memory Jar

cuts:

Endless one and Arcbound Ravager were just unnecessary. cutting them for more resiliency in the combo was a no brainer.

Origin Spell bomb doesnt do anything. having an extra white to draw during your combo turn is rare, in my experience and the 1/1 is generally irrelevant.

beseech is just an expensive tutor that hurts too much off ad naus and isnt super necessary.

salvaging is too expensive, and there arent enough creatures ETBing to really abuse it

open the vaults is expensive and im convinced yawgmoth's will can do everything it does with more flexibility and other applications

Null profusion was pretty much a pet card. 6 mana is too much for ad naus and too slow for the deck. Adds: Anvil should've been in the initial list, i just forgot about it lol

angels grace gives a lot of insurance on your ad naus turn, and lets you dig as deep as you need. I'm a little worried it will shift the focus of the deck from Aetherflux combos to just ramping out a huge exsanguinate. (i suppose this could be solved by cutting esanguinate and krarkclan (cause krark clan doesnt really fuel anything else))

vedalken orrery won over leyline of anticipation because it benefits from semblance and cloud key. the 1 in X games where i start with leyline is cute, but thats about it. Orrery lets you combo at instant speed which should give you saftey against anything not named krosan grip.

mystical tutor replaces beseech. not much to say, grabs a spell i need. usually ad naus

elsewhere flask draws a card and is cheap. really any egg or cheap mana rock could go here i just ran out of ideas. the mana fixing i can see being relevant as well.

paradoxical outcome is basically ad naus 2, and dramatic reversal lets you continue a combo turn if youre about to run out of mana

reshape's base function is to find lotus bloom and put it into play. otherwise it generally tutors for mana rocks.

Memory jar gives a new hand if yours sucks, which can help with a combo turn

At FNM last Friday, went 3-1. Lost first round against Izzet spells, he was running Fevered Visions which really messed me up. Round 2, went 2-0 with no problems, can't quiet remember what the deck was. Round 3, went against a BU Zombies deck of her own brew. Game 1 was 27 minutes, we both had a quite a slow start but pulled it off. Game 2 had it easy, she wasn't getting what she needed, and I had started with a Languish in hand. Round 4, went against White Wienies, overran with Grim Flayer game 1, mana screwed game 2, and languished game 3. Took 4th place that night.

Some thoughts on Kaladesh and the like.

AlexRuzhyo, 8 years ago

Kaladesh spoilers have come and gone with nothing for Kaalia.

People say that creature power level is on the rise, while this is true for the lower end of the curve, the inverse seems true for the higher end. We've been to a block all about dragons, returned to Innistrad, a plane infested with angels and demons, mind you, and came out of them both with nothing of real note. Where are the powerhouses that the original Innistrad and Return to Ravnica blocks offered us? I find it ironic that the only creature that I run from the Khans block is a Demon of all things, one who barely makes the cut outside of my meta.

Rambling aside, the deck's been performing well. I soon hope to acquire Rakdos the Defiler. The value of Strionic Resonator and Sunforger have been brought up so I've added them to the maybeboard.

I feel as though Aggravated Assault and/or Sword of Feast and Famine haven't quite been pulling their weight. I'm considering their slots for the aforementioned cards or possibly from other prison pieces, going off of feedback from another deck.

I just added a more organized description so I can update it when I need to when I move cards around and/or replace cards. Also so it can be easier to grasp and not to much to read.

Potential changes and thoughts

demonicgrizzly, 8 years ago

After the last tournament results, I have decided to experiment replacing Boon Satyr with Dungrove Elder purely for the Hexproof and its synergy with opponents using path to exile.

I am also still testing Avatar of the Resolute is worth it, and so far the way I have the deck built I think not. It's a good card but when I draw it I wish it was literally anything else. Since I am not running Experiment One his counter almost never happens. The. Reach is nice against flying, but the dream of having a board big enough to trigger the counter almost never happens in this deck. Still trying the find a good two drop. Maybe Vexing Shusher? From all the games I have played this build can actually be pretty grindy depending on the match so having the utility mainboard to prevent my Collected Company's from being countered could be useful but you can't reasonably expect it to attack and live so...I don't know. Myr Superion would be an epic hit with coco but having one gumming up an otherwise decent opening hand would suck, especially if I can't keep the mana dork on the field.

Also considering Eldritch Evolution to guarantee a turn two Groundbreaker if I get my mana dork to stick turn one.

Changes

Cocopower9, 8 years ago

After I had playtested it against some real legacy decks I realized I needed more interaction with other decks and ways to protect blight steel from path and swords, so I put force of wills. I also put in bolts for interaction. Some one said y don't u give it haste so I put need for speed bc after u madcap u have no mana so u sac a tapped land and give it haste.

Decklist Finalized

thx1981, 8 years ago

I think I've locked down the decklist as it will be registered on 1 October in Indy. Some numbers may change depending on what cards I can get a hold of for the event, but barring any amazing revelations, it should look something like this. The sideboard may get tweaked a bit but I like it. Dwarves & Humans, Start Your Engines!!!

Minor Changes

Korlus, 8 years ago

In:

Out:

This is designed to add a little more evasion to the mix. We lose out on the potential haste from Reckless Charge but gain a beefy pump spell. There are only two being run because you rarely want to draw them in multiples, but one of them would be the sweet spot. Since they are largely replaceable with the other one-mana pump options, we're now running 8x trample enablers, practically guaranteeing one. If one isn't drawn then Crop Rotation can act as fallback evasion.

I'm still trying to find room for 4x Mutagenic Growth, but it seems unlikely to turn up without cutting at least one land.

Added more Creatures

StuBi, 8 years ago

I'm playing around with Creatures in this build, at the moment.

Servant of the Conduit help to Ramp, add Energy Counters, and stop colour screw.

Fairgrounds Trumpeter hitchhikes Counters from other Creatures.

Seems to be playing a bit stronger.
