AFAIK some standout issues with Roger are that he's guaranteed sac fodder, he's a free Commander for Deflecting Swat and Fierce Guardianship, and he makes Mox Amber wildly more reliable. It also helps that he's in Red, a very fast colour ramp-wise (lots of Rituals).

"Goes infinite with a ham sandwich" can't help but think of the nitpicking nerds on that one : ) Such a great magic channel!

Personally, I'd go with Rograkh, Son of Rohgahh just because of partner. If it was a solo commander I think it would be an awesome card, but a 0 cost partner commander is such a free choice in deck building, like pre-nerf companion, but it also turns on Fierce Guardianship and Mox Amber and things like that, or can be a 0 mana thing the deck can sac.

legendofa,

"A fair statement, but sergiodelrio's comment isn't?"

I never once said sergiodelrio's statement was unfair, I said it was wrong. His statement was implying that every individual who attempts to build a deck is a literal robot who constructs decks only by spreadsheets and numbers. In truth, that's a passionate minority of players - as you said. If the cEDH community (the frequency of their events, and overall representation) is any measure to go by, then few individuals are likely to go out and buy the aforementioned banned cards.

"So I don't see this representing a cascade of high-profile mana rock bans at all."

What I was saying was that Pandora's box is open. Sure, the RC was sparse with their bans - but that's because Commander is fundamentally different from Standard, Pioneer, Modern, Legacy etc. because it's an eternal format not under the direct purview of Wizards AND it's considered "casual". It has no GPs and no organized tournaments. There were a lack of bans not because the RC is lenient - it's because they're not necessary. But now that the box is open, it's clear that there's a chance that bans may not come for the "health of the community" but to serve as a new means of generating more consumer interest in future product.

But Mana Crypt is a relic of the early overpowered days, almost on par with the original Moxen, and Jeweled Lotus was an experiment that arguably was allowed to continue for too long.

Wrong. Mana Crypt isn't a relic - it was the poster child of chase rares in Commander. Fierce Guardianship & Friends, The Great Henge, The One Ring, Smothering Tithe, Force of Negation - this card may be old but Mana Crypt very much matches the design philosophy of today. Most importantly, over the course of EDH/Commander's history it has been constantly marketed in just about every premium product Wizards has ever produced. Also Jeweled Lotus was not an experiment. It was an unapologetic cash grab. Do you think the price tag would have been justified for Commander Masters without the inclusion of some stupid high priced rare? Need I remind you that the Commander Masters collector's booster box came with only 4 packs, and at the time of release commanded a $379.99 asking price?

What would you expect this new hyper-powered hotness to do? It's got be colorless, and if it's a mana rock, it needs to be nearly or more efficient as Sol Ring. Do you expect this card to be printed in the near-but-vague future?

I'm not really good at thinking up cards. I assume that when it shows up it will get the community talking and most importantly - excited. I'm sticking with my spitball number of about 12 months or so for this card to show up and of course only be accessible through some sort of premium product.

Mortlocke I saw your other thread and had a couple of questions. I'm casual enough that I don't own or regularly see any of the cards that got banned, so I might be missing something, but how do these bans encourage or force a flat, interaction-less battlecruiser play style? There's still plenty of room for all the same interaction; people just can't slam down Zacama, Primal Calamity on turn 2 or whatever. Fierce Guardianship, Toxic Deluge, Swords to Plowshares, Chaos Warp, all the key interaction cards are still live.

And the ban article did make it clear that Sol Ring in particular isn't going anywhere, so I would say the ending point is right about here, at the 8-mana-on-turn-1 point. Is Jeweled Lotus or Mana Crypt really an essential part of every deck above a certain level, to the point where a deck doesn't work without it?

I completely get the frustration of losing a huge investment (been there myself), and the format will definitely be slower. But how much will the format actually change?

For your strategy, I'd focus on either infect or +1/+1 counters since the list seems to be a bit "busy" with too much going on. Once you choose which way you'd like to take the deck, we can further tweak - proliferation will still be central to your overall plan.

Here are some suggestions by color that you might want to consider adding to your mainboard:

:

Heroic Intervention, Nature's Lore, The Great Henge, Three Visits.

:

Akroma's Will, Flawless Manuever, Smothering Tithe, Teferi's Protection, Trouble in Pairs.

:

Cyclonic Rift, Fierce Guardianship, Mana Drain, Swan Song.

Permission Denied

I think you can get away with swapping out removing some counter spells as it seems a bit overkill - Cancel, Dispel, Envelop, Negate, and Nullify could probably come out in favor of Fierce Guardianship, Mana Drain, and Swan Song (the others could just be cut).

For your land base, I'd work the following lands in to help with your color wheel:

Fetch Lands: Flooded Strand, Misty Rainforest, Windswept Heath

Filter Lands: Flooded Grove, Mystic Gate, Wooded Bastion

Pathways Lands: Barkchannel Pathway  Flip, Branchloft Pathway  Flip, Hengegate Pathway  Flip

Shock Lands: Breeding Pool, Hallowed Fountain, Temple Garden

Tri-Cycle Land: Spara's Headquarters

True Duals: Savannah, Tropical Island, Tundra

For mana rocks, I prefer the talismans over the signets:

Talisman of Curiosity, Talisman of Progress, Talisman of Unity

I think your Kros, Defense Contractor list is in a good spot, it just needs to be a little more focused.

Thanks for taking a look fluffyeel !

  • You are spot on regarding mana. I've added a Reflecting Pool and a Scalding Tarn which should help. The new fetchable surveil lands look great for this deck given the graveyard synergies with caging.
  • Mana Crypt and Mana Vault are long term goals for the deck. With some luck we will have some reprints!
  • Commandeer looks like a ball of fun! I am a little worried about my blue card count here but there are several other decks it'll do very well in.
  • I'll have to give Displacer Kitten a try. It would go quite nuts with a haste source and a caged Gilded Lotus for instance. A cage off of Deflecting Swat and/or Fierce Guardianship would also be crazy.
  • Thanks also for the other recommendations. I've had great times with Fact or Fiction in the past, probably time to bust it out again. Force spiking everything with Patron Wizard would also be useful.

You know, this is exactly the kind of thing that I really like in magic. Not necessarily the format that this makes, but just wotc doing an event just because it's fun for players, that's something I haven't seen for a good bit : ) I could definitely build something fun out of what I've got laying around and have a good time with this.

That being said, I think it would make a terrible format, but a great event. Imagine somebody playing 5 color Heliod, Sun-Crowned and Walking Ballista combo that could hold up Fierce Guardianship and Force of Will to protect the combo. Or Yawgmoth, Thran Physician with an undying partner for a command zone combo.

I like that it's a fun event, it's a theme that just works great for me, and I don't know, I think it's kind of nice to see wotc saying to players, fun is playing the game, after so long of them saying, fun is buying the game.
