Countering a Card from Exile

Asked by giveuptheghost 2 years ago

Hi, so just a question here, I think I know the answer but I want to be sure.

Let's say I play a Jeska's Will, exiling two cards. Those cards are Submerge and Fierce Guardianship. I cast Submerge and then cast Fierce Guardianship, countering the Submerge. Is Submerge still exiled or does countering the spell allow it to enter the graveyard?

Sorry if this is a basic question, exile/impulse draw is something I have not really built into my decks before and I want to be sure that I don't make a mistake in gameplay. Thanks!

It can get a little confusing with multiple zones in play...

When you cast Submerge from exile, it goes on the stack like any spell would. No matter from where/how you cast a spell, it must go onto the stack before resolving. Since this is the case, when it is countered it's really no different from any other spell--it's being countered from the stack, and it goes to the graveyard.

"Countering" actually means sending a card from the stack to the graveyard, so any time you counter a spell, the graveyard is where it goes. If it goes somewhere else, the countering effect will say so explicitly (like Dissipate or Memory Lapse). It doesn't matter where the spell comes from.

Thanks! I had thought that countering the Submerge would result in it entering the graveyard instead of re-entering the exile zone, but I just wanted to be sure. Makes sense that it doesn't matter if the card was in exile before entering the stack, once it's there it just behaves as any other card would. Appreciate the answers!!
