Budget Witch-Maw Cycling

Commander / EDH GWUB

FlamingSquid

I've had the Gavi precon for a while and I'm a really big fan of cycling because of it, despite people in my playgroup making fun of cycling decks in general. This deck has a very basic plan to win: cycle...cycle like mad.

Most of the deck can be chalked up as just chaff that happens to cycle, and generally I'd agree, though their ability to cycle makes them extremely useful in this deck. Take Greater Saddwurm: normally its a 7/7 for 7 that can avoid being blocked by a pile of 1/1 tokens. While it isn't all that great, it's super useful with Ravos, as it now becomes a 2 cycle each turn, and when on the field, its now an 8/8 thanks to Ravos. The partner commanders both serve their purposes here - Ravos recurs cycling cards and buffs them all (which is super helpful with the small tokens from Drake Haven and Valiant Rescuer), while Kydele is there as a mana rock that benefits from you cycling a bunch each turn, sometimes tapping for 10 if you've got the right board-state.

Having tested it, I've found it does suffer from lack of recursion when it comes to non-cycling cards. If you've popped off with Eerie Ultimatum or Herald of the Forgotten but your opponent was able to counter or board-wipe, then it's kinda hard to come back from this (Ravos can help grab Herald again, but doing so kinda just draws out more removal over time). Luckily you don't need these mass recursion cards to win, as even the simple cycling-value pieces can net you enough advantage to win.

My best advice for this deck is to get your commanders out as quick as possible to start this value - establish a way to get some pieces back if you draw into a vein of lands, and a way to keep on cycling.

Oh, and apologies that it's kinda costly when compared to most budget decks, the more the colours in a deck, the likelihood it'll be more expensive. You could lower this by replacing more cards with cycling chaff - I imagine the deck still runs fine when you strip out the cards but leave the value pieces then just use super cheap cycling cards in their place.
