Ranar - Flicker, Exile, Polymorph!

Commander / EDH* Exile WU (Azorius)

Dunnyct

Gameplan: win via combo. Polymorph cards cheat random value or combo pieces into play and I'm never unhappy to do it - spirits are cheap and my creatures tend to be high-value. Not having small creatures does mean I occasionally don't have worthwhile stuff to blink, but copious exile interaction still guarantees a fast turnout of spirits.

Small artifact theme to get more value out of Trinket mage and that one draw creature, plus colorless sources of mana helps with Eldrazi displacer.

THIS IS NOT A FORETELL DECK. THERE ARE FORETELL CARDS IN HERE BECAUSE THEY ARE GOOD VALUE. THERE IS A DIFFERENCE!

Power level: high 7 to low 8, I'm happy to play in 8s. I've been complained about in squarely 7-level pods because of the nature of combos and cheap interaction, especially when polymorph effects tend to make them come out pretty randomly.

There are some vanity cards in here that I can't honestly recommend to other people but I play them because I enjoy them. Heck, the polymorph theme is basically this.

  • misdirect is just funny even if it rarely has targets

  • late to dinner is in there because sometimes shit happens to your combo pieces and you want to get them back. See also mistveil plains. These are personal choices and not general recs

  • Makindi stampede: this has been a wincon exactly once. I do not really win via combat. But hey, for the cost of a tapland, right?

  • Act of Authority and Prison Jailer: I like edh politics and these can be fun. And they're not actually bad cards, Jailer in particular spits out a lot of tokens and Ranar's great at defending the monarch, so long as you remember to exile things with trample.

  • Ethereal valkyrie: great card, lots of fun, it's slow and ultimately does not help me win efficiently. If I wasn't comboing to win this would be legitimately good but as-is it's just a very entertaining distraction that I like getting value off've.

  • Sad Bot is an artifact (in the relic sense) of this deck sitting between 7 and 8. It's too slow in 8 but it's fun in 7. I'm fine with it and prefer it over Kor whatsit or the foretell farmer. Searching islands can be relevant for Spectral Deluge.

Obvious upgrades exist for this (tutors, fast mana, palinchron over great whale, free spells) but I'm fine with it where it is. It's fun. Also, Displacer Kitten is a wincon in itself but it's fucking awful to play with and against. It's so fiddly and you're not guaranteed to win with it, but are still obliged to combo off non-deterministically for the sake of trying. It was not fun so I cut it and would not add it back even in a squarely 8 level version of the deck.
