The Cruelty of Gix

Enchantment — Saga

Read ahead (As this Saga enters the battlefield, choose a chapter and start with that many lore counters. Add one after your draw step. Activate and/or enable the ability of tied to the required number of counters. Sacrifice it after you put a third lore counter on it.)

Target opponent reveals their hand. You choose a creature or planeswalker card from it. That player discards that card.

Search your library for a card, put that card into your hand, then shuffle your library. You lose 3 life.

Put target creature card from a graveyard onto the battlefield under your control.

Yeah that's kind of where I'm at as well. I'd been wanting to work Possibility Storm into a deck for a while, but I'm not sure it's needed here either when comparing to the Mono-White version.

I feel like Possibility Storm would work a lot better in a Commander/Brawl deck since you could make use of stuff like Idyllic Tutor & Moon-Blessed Cleric, or even splash black for proper tutors like Grim Tutor or The Cruelty of Gix to really rely on getting it cast most games.

If the Possibility Storm was even 1 less mana to cast I think I could make it pretty reliable in a 60-card build, but I agree that playing this version of the deck feels like waiting on the Possibility Storm more for the novelty value than as a useful finisher given all the existing control options.

5-CMC just seems too high a cost for an Enchantment that doesn't directly interact with the current boardstate, just future turns -- and its quality is also deeply worsened if there is no Magistrate in play (to the point where it could just as easily work against you as help you depending on the opponent's deck.) It can be a pretty dangerous card to play if opponent's casting isn't shut down. I'll keep tweaking the mono-white version to see what I can come up with to strengthen it.

Thanks again bud!

How's it going? Nice recent update, you've done a good job with cutting creatures. If you're worried about card prices then don't get Grim Tutor, not worth it, since for it's high price you could add many more budget friendly card upgrades.

Something to think about for some deck improvements is the mana curve and how it plays having such a heavy top end. The big creatures you want to reanimate are the top of the mana curve here and there's a lot of them, it's filled. Having many other 5 CMC or higher spells (there's 10 here) that aren't creatures can really bog down the mana curve making gameplay worse.

Grievous Wound, Demonic Covenant, Badlands Revival, Convert to Slime, Final Parting, The Cruelty of Gix, Deadbridge Chant, Breach the Multiverse none of these cards are really needed. Since creatures fill the top of the mana curve then focus on improving the beginning of the mana curve? Malevolent Rumble and Diresight are examples of cards at beginning of the mana curve that do a lot for their mana costs for reanimation strategy.

Consider more lower mana cost reanimation spells? If the plan is to cast Stickfingers turn 4 for two then give yourself more chances to reanimate a creature that same turn with more lower mana cost reanimation? You have Reanimate and Animate Dead, but that's really it for early game possible reanimation. Consider Life / Death and Soul Exchange?

A big advantage of green recursion spells here is getting back a reanimation spell to reanimate again. The problem is most of the recursion spells here can only get back a permanent, not a nonpermanent spell. Other than Animate Dead most reanimation here is coming from nonpermanent spells. Consider Regrowth and Dryad's Revival?

Opponent exile effects at your creatures can really ruin your day. Consider some protection against exile? Fine protection against exile here is creature sac since if you sac your creature in response to the exile then it instead goes to your graveyard to be reanimated again. Greater Good is powerful since it can be repeatable, not only is it creature sac, but draw and discard too. Lazotep Quarry is a land that can sac a creature to make a mana.

If you're having trouble with opponents attacking you then Grave Titan could really help. It puts a lot of defense onto the battlefield when it comes in.

Having completed my quest to play all 52 of my decks, I decided to try getting a win with all of my deck

Sep 23

Aminatou's Adventures in babysitting the Gatewatch won a long long game. Lucky to pull out a win with many combo pieces out: The Chain Veil, Felidar Guardian, Blinky the Eldrazi (Eldrazi Displacer, which blanked two pieces of removal on my final turn). Got infinite Jace, Architect of Thought activations into Wishclaw Talisman for Altar of the Brood. Darryl's colourless Assassins creed deck kept replaying Smoke Bomb, delaying me for several turns even as I tutored thrice with The Cruelty of Gix Saga, finally went infinite when he let the fuckin Smoke Bomb die. My losers' record goes up to 6-12

Very solid build on a budget and I love the theme! I posted some comments on my Jorn deck page in response to yours. So for here, and focusing on simply card draw and protection, I recommend these cards because they're cheap and have never let me down:

  1. Joint Exploration - its like Growth Spiral and Opt rolled into one
  2. The Cruelty of Gix - because of the new "Read Ahead" mechanic, this thing lets you tutor for any card at the small price of 3 life (typical when you're in the color of Black), and also has graveyard recursion which is what your deck is trying to do.
  3. Diabolic Vision - probably THE best scry/draw card in Dimir colors and runs about $0.50
  4. Expedition Map - tutors for ANY land
  5. Tempt with Discovery - also tutors for ANY land, and usually within a game you'll get +1 or +2 additional lands off this cast
  6. Sunstone - $0.25 card from Ice Age that gives you a Fog effect when you need it
  7. Viridian Revel - great against folks playing treasure-heavy decks, allowing you to draw every time they sac a treasure
  8. Scrying Sheets - a bit out of your budget, being roughly $5-6, but its soooooooo good in Snow decks

It's expensive, but Jeweled Lotus is amazing in Muldrotha. You can fetch it with Urza's Saga and recur it.

Speaking of Sagas, they're amazing in muldrotha, I run The Cruelty of Gix, Binding the Old Gods, The Phasing of Zhalfir, Phyrexian Scriptures, and I am testing out The War in Heaven. Those probably would work better than Oblivion Stone.

38 lands is a bit high, you can probably get away with 34-35, even 33 if you're willing to invest in Mana Crypt and Mana Vault.

In my hands, Muldrotha has been running better as a combo cEDH list. I have tried to build it other ways and it was honestly either too slow or too samey to my Zegana and Miirym lists. I think combo would work better, Muldrotha loves self mill and that can act as a sort of turbo way to draw through your deck.

If you're wanting to stick to ramp, you're going to need to speed it up

A good ramp package I use in U/G and U/G/X lists, tweaked for Muldrotha:

1 drop: 1-3

Sol Ring

sometimes Birds of Paradise and other related mana guys

for Muldrotha: Expedition Map and Wayfarer's Bauble will do wonders

2 drop: ~6

Arcane Signet

Bloom Tender: I play this in almost every 3+ color list

Farseek

Three Visits

Nature's Lore

Muldrotha Specific: Sakura-Tribe Elder, Skull Prophet, Rootcoil Creeper

3 drop: 1-2

Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath: hilarious to recur every turn

Cultivate, Harrow, Springbloom Druid are all good too

You will also want some more heavier hitters up top, generally, in ramp heavy decks I will run anywhere from 8 to 15 (depending on how well I ramp). I want to be able to have a big finisher and keep them going in Ramp lists (you can see these 2 to see what I mean: Nature's Revenge (not recognized by brackets for some reason) and Baby Dwagon Ehhhhhh?, both are very powerful and keep the pressure up, I rarely have an issue with either too many big guys and not enough ramp.

Sire of Stagnation

Toxrill, the Corrosive

Koma, Cosmos Serpent

I've been loving the ancient dragons

The other Jin-Gitaxias is also pretty potent

Here is my list if it helps give any ideas to help yours: The Circle of Life

Note:

Massacre Girl= Primaris Eliminator

Noxious Gearhulk= Necron Deathmark

The Eldest Reborn = The War in Heaven

I don't think I have put the combos down in the description yet but I can explain them if you want to know. Hope this helps!

Update!

Out: Growth Spiral and Sundial of the Infinite

In: Joint Exploration and The Cruelty of Gix

Dominaria United has some nice new cards out. Joint Exploration is an improved Growth Spiral that lets us scry 2 before drawing. The Cruelty of Gix just adds to the flavor of the deck, and acts as a Duress + Imperial Seal + Reanimate (but can also steal from other's graveyards, like the one we filled with the Duress effect). Going to try it out!
