Tarrian's Soulcleaver

Legendary Artifact — Equipment

Equipped creature has vigilance

Whenever another artifact or creature is put into a graveyard from the battlefield, put a +1/+1 counter on equipped creature.

Equip (: Attach this to target creature you control. Equip only as a sorcery. This enters the battlefield unattached and stays on the battlefield if the creature this card is attached to leaves the battlefield.)

seshiro_of_the_orochi -
Thanks much for the comments and suggestions. Some thoughts ...

  • Tarrian's Soulcleaver and Blade of the Bloodchief are great on other creatures (they basically turn anyone into a Venomcrawler). But they don't do anything for Massacre Girl at all.
  • Thinking about Fake Your Own Death: Yeah, like I say in the description, I've got "a few blink effects for Elektra, for when the party gets out of hand again". But I probably need to either add more or delete the package entirely. With my current 5x cards (Synod Sanctum, Voyager Staff, Erratic Portal, Conjurer's Closet, and Demonic Gifts), I only have a 54% chance of having one by Turn 7, and that's not as consistent as I'd like. But to justify more, I'd really need to swap a bunch of creatures out for ones with ETB effects (currently I only have 7 creatures worth blinking). Hmmm ...
  • You might not have noticed it in the deck description, but "I'm already bringing plenty of salt to the table with a repeatable board-wipe in the Command Zone; I don't want to bring much more. As an example, I'm avoiding Blood Artist effects." So thanks, but Bastion of Remembrance is right out.
  • Similarly, you might not have noticed that I said "I mostly play in an ultra-budget (USD $25) Bracket 2 pod. So ... any card above USD $3 has to be better for the deck than Skullclamp". Grave Betrayal is good, but it's no Skullclamp. And Revel in Riches is great, but ridiculously overpriced for this deck.

Thanks again; cheers!

I like the general direction you're taking with the Girl. As far as wincons go, she's propably a pretty great voltron. To go a little harder into that aspect of hers, maybe try Tarrian's Soulcleaver and Blade of the Bloodchief. Also, you might want a way to re-use your Girl: Fake Your Own Death and similar effects combined with your sac outlets are a black way of blinking. Finally, some damage effects or other possible wincos that don't die to the Girl seem important. Bastion of Remembrance, Grave Betrayal and Revel in Riches seem pretty powerful for that.

Enjoy your further brewing! :D

This look like a very interesting budget version of Kotis. I've been playing him for some time and I think I'd add the following to your list (I've tried to keep the maximum price at around 5 dollars per card):

  • Aqueous Form: a very simple enchantment that simply makes Kotis unblockable.
  • Arcane Flight: very cheap to cast and an excellent addition to making Kotis harder to block.
  • Combat Research: draw cards upon damage and grants Kotis some boost and protection.
  • Curiosity: why not draw some cards upon damaging opponents?
  • Elusive Otter: its sorcery-adventure side (Grove's Bounty) is a great way to make Kotis a little stronger, and you can still summon a prowess-Otter afterwards.
  • Eternal Thirst: creatures tend to die a lot in a game of commander, so banking on that with this enchantment for Kotis seems to make sense. The lifegain is fun too.
  • Felix Five-Boots: what's better than stealing stuff once per attack? Stealing stuff twice per attack of course!
  • Gonti, Night Minister: this card is ideal in a four-player (or more) pod. Gonti diverts attention away from you because he makes it much more lucrative for all your opponents to attack anyone but you. The fact that for every spell that you don't own but cast, you also receive a treasure token just synergizes extremely well with Kotis.
  • Hydra's Growth: doubling Kotis' power/toughness every once in a while seems very beneficial.
  • Strong Back: insanely powerful in that it acts as an Ancestral Mask that also cheapens all further aura casting and equipping.
  • Tarrian's Soulcleaver: something dies, Kotis gets stronger. Vigilance is also very strong on a being like Kotis.
  • The Thirteenth Doctorfoil: so for every spell that you cast from opponents' libraries, Kotis can gain more power/toughness. To top it off, the doctor allows you to untap Kotis after an attack; double trouble for your opponents!
  • Villainous Wealth: basically Kotis in sorcery form.
  • Well Rested: one of the most ridiculously strong auras I've ever seen, especially considering its cost to cast. For just two mana, every time Kotis untaps you gain life, draw a card and you make Kotis stronger!
  • Wrecking Ball arm: instead of bae power/toughness 2/1, why not make it 7/7? Also makes him a bit less blockable.

Hope this helps you in some way; good luck!

Recommended cards that aren't black but feel like they should/could be:

The One Ring: This is black card draw.

Skrelv, Defector Mite: Mostly the phyrexian mana and artwork. Highly useful for the one shot kill.

Suspicious Bookcase: Some of the artwork on this card comes straight from Halloween.

Defiler of Faith: Life as a resource.

Shadowspear: Lore-wise it's a corrupted weapon from the underworld.

Basilisk Collar: Both keywords are common in black.

Blackblade Reforged: Literally a demon's sword.

Nettlecyst: Black token and phyrexian.

Tarrian's Soulcleaver: Graveyard synergy.

Bloodforged Battle-Axe: Mostly artwork/name/flavor.

Grafted Exoskeleton: Black themed downside. Infect in black's wheelhouse.

Bloodthirsty Blade: Blood as a cost.

Blade of the Bloodchief: Death as a benefit.

Quietus Spike: Multiple black creatures have this effect.

Hope that helps.

You might be interested in Tarrian's Soulcleaver. You mentioned giving Mag vigilance before wiping during an attack. Cleaver is the perfect weapon for that.

CNG_Stream I wasn't too sure about the ruling when Goldvein Hydra came up on Scryfall, and he has some good synergy. Thanks for that! The vigilance angle came about from the Gingerbrute requiring tap to sacrifice. The added advantage it has for the Brightglass Gearhulk is more utility. Kor Halberd is definitely going in, I'll test with 2 Tarrian's Soulcleaver before I consider scrapping it completely. Soulcleaver is rather bad for the smaller creatures because if they die, I get nothing. On the Gearhulk, it becomes a pain to get rid of. I forgot Basilisk Collar was in standard, I'll add to the maybeboard.

Regarding a more enchantment based strategy, I did consider that idea with Ordeal of Nylea for land filtering and Audacity and Ethereal Armor, and my creatures would probably be more lifegain centered with Authority of the Consuls in standard, like Ruin-Lurker Bat. I run a Commander spirit enchantment deck, and as much as I love running enchantments, I wanted to try something different.

Considering your equipment are both legendary, I am not sure you want to run 4 copies of each. In particualr I do not see the value of 4 copies of Tarrian's Soulcleaver as you are not doing anything that particularly helps this card grow your creatures a significant deal. I think the Basilisk Collar might be a more useful equipment if you wnat a utility equipment, but if you really want the vigilance then I would suggest Kor Halberd as it gives you a +1/+1 by default. Making sure to suggest equipment that are still one drops due to you building around the gearhulk.

Sadly there is not All That Glitters style of card in standard for this idea, but the gearhulk does search for enchantments as well. So cards like Ethereal Armor and Shardmage's Rescue are probably a really good cards to consider for this deck if you decide to shift to enchantment synergies instead of equip. Considering the Gearhulk gets to search 2 cards, the idea of the Shardmage's Rescue seems like a great include as it gives you a protection spell you can search for along with 1 other card. This also means you cna shift into using cards like Optimistic Scavenger as a good 1 drop to search for as well, but that might be a different idea if you want to try that as it would focus more on enchantments.

Lastly you might want to consider Goldvein Hydra. This spell counts as a 1 cost while in deck, meaning that if you can search out this X power vigilance, haste, trample creature at anytime and even get 2 of them so when the first bites it, you can spend all the treasures made from it to power up the second.
