Borderland Explorer

Creature — Elf Scout

When Borderland Explorer enters the battlefield, each player may discard a card. Each player who discarded a card this way may search their library for a basic land card, reveal it, put it into their hand, then shuffle their library.

Hey goldlion, it's been awhile I see you updated your page quite a bit and started adding in a bit more cards. In going for your help request, to keep the consistency of the jank theme in abusing Ob Nixilis I would consider running it more of a lands matter type of deck. It gives it a lot more consistency and will definitely be a more interesting approach.

Since a lot of the "temptation" cards are based upon lands it will make a lot more sense to run those type of shenaningans. There are plenty of interesting synergy that come from using lands for instance a cool combo involving Glacial Chasm and Riftstone Portal when you use Hour of Promise, now all your lands can tap for and no damage can be done to you. Not to mention Glacial Chasm can also tap for mana! Adding to the fact that you will out value them, if you add in cards like Azusa, Lost but Seeking, Oracle of Mul Daya, Exploration in addition to Ramunap and Crucible, you will pull ahead of the game far more than your opponents. Not to mention also that being able to reuse Ghost Quarter or Field of Ruin more than once per turn can lead to the whole table killed once the set up is done.

Another thing I noticed when I was taking a look over is including a Birthing Pod chain, Ghave is the perfect CMC to pod right into Ob Nixilis, I see that you are already running Eldritch Evolution which is awesome. Pod also has other ways you can abuse to trigger your death effects for let's say Veteran Explorer, which also pulls out a 2 cmc creature like Borderland Explorer, so on and so forth.

Also noticed that we forgot a great protection spell in the card of Heroic Intervention a cheap casting stellar card.

Let's try make this deck complete :P

I don't think I would put in Blastoderm mainboard, but maybe find a place for it in the sideboard for when your Backwoods Survivalists and Rhizome Lurchers are threatened by blue/black control.

Also I just realized that Borderland Explorer might be a good fit that could help enable delirium, manafix, and be a decent threat of it's own as a 3/1. They could replace the Thraben Foulbloods or the Satyr Wayfinder.

Here might be a few janky cards: Old-Growth Dryads, Veteran Explorer, Natural Balance, Borderland Explorer, Jungle Wayfinder, and Wave of Vitriol.

You can also consider running Mindslaver to force someone to tutor while you have Ob Nixilis on the field and kill themselves LOL!

I played around with a similar deck using a burn spell + Worldfire + Spellweaver Helix to finish off an opponent. It was never quite fast enough for Modern, but it worked fine in more casual games, albeit it was a bit too linear for my taste. While your deck has a slightly different goal, I think I can still provide some useful insights.

The biggest issue I see is your deck doesn't have a good way of getting your bomb into the graveyard--casting a nine mana spell is a bit out of the question, particularly as you're lacking an explosive ramp package, and hoping to discard down to seven is just not feasible.

You have a couple options in mono-Green.

I'd also consider cutting Advent of the Wurm--it does not really add all that much on its onw to justify splashing White.

After playing my own version of the deck, you might want to include Wildfire, Ember Swallower, and Destructive Force as ways to wipe the board and put yourself ahead in the game - they can hate you all you want, but if they can't cast spells, then it doesn't matter.

You might want Dryad Greenseeker to compliment your Courser and Oracle, dropping the Borderland Explorer, since leveraging/knowing the top card of your deck can be pretty useful. More ways to dig further into your deck would be Harmonize and Reforge the Soul.

Another thing to consider is Anger, giving your Centaur Vinecrasher, Omnath, Locus of Rage, Avenger of Zendikar, Rampaging Baloths,or Borborygmos Enraged haste is big game.

Lands for you to consider are Arch of Orazca, as well as Temple of Abandon, etc. Hour of Promise can also be included to put Thespian's Stage-Dark Depths as another win condition.

I think if you're going heavier on the Crucible of Worlds/Ramunap Excavator, you might be playing a slower control-y list, one that would accommodate Destructive Flow.

Cut:

Borderland Explorer (unless you have a reason to discard)

Domesticated Hydra (just a big body, you can do better)

Both Embodiments (put your lands at risk for removal spells and dont add too much power overall unless you have a full awakening synergy)

Tunneling Geopede (too small of an effect unless you have a way to truly abuse it)

Hammer of Purphoros (what aspect are you trying to abuse with it?)

Ground Assault (Try to find instant speed removal)

Lay of the Land (in two color deck, not really needed)

Font of Fertility (not great ramp, if you want something that could be played for 1 or 3, look for search for tomorrow)

Retreat to Kazandu (again, a very small effect, unless you want to run more fertilid effects [that is a cool synergy if you want to go that way])

Retreat to Valakut (just too small, need more widespread effects, especially at 3 mana)

Searing Blaze (doesnt hit too much and better to try unconditional kills)

I came to this list from the Reddit thread you posted in. I do like your build, does Borderland Explorer really play that well; as Aquamoeba gives instant speed discard? I always keep Careful Study at a 4 of for turn 1 to set up your discard for an explosive turn 3 with Daze backup.

Here is my list let me know what you think. My Sideboard is still a work in progress. -> Madness List
