8-6-2021 Changelog

-Doomed Dissenter -Butcher Ghoul -Pawn of Ulamog -Crop Rotation -Plains +Safehold Elite +Melira, Sylvok Outcast +Kitchen Finks +Birthing Pod +Karakas Tested several changes in tournament play tonight and was pretty pleased with them. Safehold elite feels better to play than Butcher Ghoul/Doomed Dissenter, acting as both sac fodder and a combo piece. Pawn of Ulamog was okay but wasn't my favorite and was also demanding to cast with two black pips. Kitchen Finks provides nice lifegain to recoup the incidental damage we do to ourselves, as well as being a combo piece and sac fodder. Melira is the only thing that doesn't gel super well with out game plan, but with the addition of pod and the two new persist guys she is definitely worth testing as she gives us access to infinite combos which were not possible before. She is also a human which is relevant to a few creatures in the deck. Crop Rotation was meh but was probably a mistake to test as I pretty much threw it in to give us 10 points, which I realize now is not necessary. Natural order going down a point gave us a ton of possibilities to work with and Birthing Pod is one that I am most excited to try, so it gets the nod over Crop Rotation for sure. Pod has sacrifice synergy and also lets us become even more of a toolbox deck which I really enjoy. Mind twist was solid and fits our hand attack theme, but Jitte going down to 1 point made it impossible not to jam into a deck already running Stoneforge Mystic. It acts as an amazing tutor target and just an all around great card to slap on one of the many random bodies we will have out. Karakas comes in to answer huge problem threats for us such as Marit Lage and Kalitas, while offering big tempo swings other times. The deck already gets hosed by blood moon pretty much, so having access to that one Plains was just not enough to justify that slot not being Karakas. Maybe as I run into more Blue Moon my mind will change, but for now this feels correct.

Switching it Up

quest202, 3 years ago

Changed a few things within the deck, Profane Memento was taken out and Thran Dynamo was put it it’s place; Stab Wound was also replaced with Mission Briefing. Phenax, God of Deception was removed as commander and put into main deck and was replaced by Mirko Vosk, Mind Drinker. The final change was switching Counterspell with Drown in the Loch.

Revamped Deck Completely

A_Strangled_Catfish, 3 years ago

I removed all of the creatures and spells that had to do with attacking or stealing stuff from graveyards. This deck is not meant to attack ever and I plan to go back to that origin

Mainly updates that I've already made but not updated on here.

Burn is very popular at my shop (regularly around 25%) so quite a few cards are being added to combat this, including a mainboard Cavalier of Night and white to play Siege Rhino in the side. With white Eidolon of Rhetoric feels like a nice solution to prowess and the odd storm deck, though it's possible this should be an Ethersworn Canonist. Grist has felt good in some matchups but in many it feels weak to draw when I'm not trying to grind an opponent out, so I'm removing one of them (still leaving one as tutorable removal) and playing a Reclamation Sage instead, which feels good in a metagame with lots of Urza's Saga, plus all the usual random targets (Eidolon of the Great Revel, Dryad of the Ilysian Grove, any artifact hate cards, etc cet). Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons hasn't really done anything in my games so far, it's been too slow in my shop's metagame, so I'm adding in a Cavalier of Night mainboard (it was previously in my side, although this wasn't updated in this list) which seems like a second good removal spell, and it's almost unbeatable for burn and prowess. Additionally I just can't find any copies of Crime / Punishment and don't feel like paying almost $15 for each online so I'm not actually playing them.

Mainboard Cuts: 1x Verdant Catacombs (simply not owned, was replaced by the tomb that becomes a temple garden) 1x Grist, the Hunger Tide 1x Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons 1x Gilded Goose (Perhaps this should be in as it's relevant against burn, needs more testing to me) 1x Ignoble Hierarch (I don't own the full playset)

Mainboard Additions: 1x Temple Gardenfoil 1x Reclamation Sage 1x Cavalier of Night 2x Birds of Paradise

Sideboard Cuts: 2x Crime / Punishment (not owned) 1x Damping Sphere (Very little storm or tron) 1x Force of Vigor (Second copy isn't owned) 1x Gaea's Blessing (No mill decks means this card feels mediocre) 1x Reclamation Sage (moved mainboard)

Sideboard Additions: 1x Collector Ouphe 1x Scavenging Ooze 1x Eidolon of Rhetoric 1x Knight of Autumn 1x Siege Rhino 1x Grist, the Hunger Tide

2 card change

MTG-Eternities, 3 years ago

.Sweet-gum recluse has left the deck for rings of brighthearth for quicker kills. so far it has worked out well. 2ndly vivian reed has left the deck for lolth. she draws cards, gives us more spider synergies, not that her ultimate matters too much. SO card she has been great as well. We might find room for vivian again, but her ultimate and lolth directly hurt each other so it might be difficult.

Out- Orcus. That wasn't long, but not worth the mana investment for meaningful removal. In- Author of Shadows

+1/+1 counters

Decided to really start pushing the +1/+1 counter theme. And made some other changes for efficiency.

More compact combos

bluezor, 3 years ago

Thassa's Oracle is basically a winning line with Reveillark, Karmic Guide, and Azami, but that honestly feels unnecessary. I already have Venser to bounce everyone's everything and I'm not sure the 2 generic CMC discount is worth the redundancy. It is a wizard, which has some side benefits for Azami and the like. Instead of that relatively complicated win-con, I'm much more interested in trying out the two card combo of Elesh Norn and Nature's Revolt. Living Plane is certainly better, but alas, damn reserve list!

D&D

The Tarrasque is cute but entirely underwhelming at 9 mana.

Klauth, Unrivaled Ancientfoil looks like a bad impression of Neheb. If it cost less I'd be more inclined to try it. Old Gnawbone is much more interesting of the two.

Klauth's Will is a decent take on Earthquake, but rather costly, misses too much of the field, and kills Radha when cast. I'll pass.

Whiffing on Wild Endeavor is far too punishing to consider it.

Dragonborn Champion is fine, but I don't know what it'd be better than.

Lair of the Hydra is neat.

Potential Repointing Thoughts 8-5-2021

julius1768, 3 years ago

With Natural Order going to 3 points, new possibilities open up. In an attempt to up the card quality of the deck and take out my least favorite sac fodder pieces (Butcher Ghoul, Doomed Dissenter, and Pawn of Ulamog) I have been toying with the idea of adding a Birthing Pod package (Birthing Pod, Safehold Elite, Kitchen Finks, and Melira, Sylvok Outcast). Would need to cut a 1 point card to fit this in, leaning toward Crop Rotation being cut. This would provide even more utility for Green Sun's Zenith and allow me to play overall better cards. The only issue would be playing Melira in the deck, as she does not do much for us unless we are comboing. Another option with another point opening up would be to slot in Jitte after cutting crop rotation, giving us a better Stoneforge package as well as helping shore up matchups against creature based decks.

Switch

NocNocs, 3 years ago

Switched out golgari charm for sudden spoiling. Sudden spoiling has way more utility against the primary way people would stop this deck... from not having their mana drain. Golgari charm is great, but my hope is that the deck will be able to survive on its own enough for sudden spoiling to be useful for politics, and punishment for scoffing at my gift of mana.
