Ch-ch-ch-changes

Spectral Flight is out. Without Unbreathing Horde, there's less reason to have a creature enchantment to + toughness. Since I don't have evasion anymore, thought that Gravecrawler and Call to the Kindred would help by giving me means to bring out zombies quickly.

I did play this in a tournament and boy did I get slaughtered. This build was just too complex and relied on too many things going right to work. It is fun to go off with though.
Major Rehaul
PC_Bot, 13 years ago
Been watching and looking to participate in more tournaments, so I did a major overhaul on the deck. I don't have all the cards I want for this deck just yet, but this is what I'm looking at so far. Still need to work on the sideboard though.
Draygo, 13 years ago
Added and subtracted stuff. Original iteration got me into top 8. I just tightened things up a bit this time around. Time to play against the other 10 who were at the Boston GP during the last tournament.

Mana Problems
TehPlutoKiss, 13 years ago
So, I fixed the mana base according to what I think it should be, not what I own. Shouldn't be too hard to get the duals I need, though, and I need to pick them up anyways, been meaning to get a playset. Only one more Spellskite needed for the playset of that, though!

3/1/2012: 3rd Place (4-1)
After a little hiatus from MTG, I returned with my boy Venser, the Sojourner. And well, my old Bant deck apparently still has it what it takes! I have updated it very little. The only addition is the interesting Young Wolf. I thought I would give him a shot to see how undying interacts with Venser. Turns out the little guy didn't ever show up, and often got side boarded for Negate or whatnot. Other than that, I tweaked it here and there. The +1 DOJ was a good call. Either way, this deck did unbelievably well with such minor changes. Read on to see how the matches went.
Game 1: 2-0 vs zombies.
Game 2: 2-0 vs Mono green undying and dungrove
Game 3: 0-2 BU Zombies
Game 4: 2-1 vs RG Wolf Run Ramp-- This I have to remark on. SOOOO Sick of WRR. So as it turns out, Venser is sick against this deck. Game 1 will be a loss. But when you side in your Flash Freeze and negates you win game 2. They will have few responses to the Stonehorn combo with Venser, or repeated acidic slime. Ultimate Venser and DONE. Bye bye mountain(s), kessig, inkmoth, etc. Proceed to beat face with Consecrated Sphinx or Wurmcoil Engine.
Game 5: 2-1 vs Bant Pod Undying Homebrew

Currently considering options for protecting Kiln Fiend and Wee Dragonauts from burn/kill spells. I'm thinking of either a cheap counterspell or a Redirect. Comments and suggestions greatly appreciated. Keep in mind mana is hard to free up in this deck.

Edited to make the deck faster and more competitive. Swapped 4 Moan of the Unhallowed for 4 Gather the Townsfolk. Added more creature control with Tragic Slip and Go for the Throat. and finally 2 Hero of Bladehold for speed

well, thats 60 cards, and i find that it seems to work very well need to playtest it more

Pulled a couple of the more expensive or slower cards, -1xFalkenrath Marauders and -3xChosen of Markov Flip for +4xStromkirk Noble; and -2xBloodcrazed Neonate and -1xFalkenrath Aristocrat for 3xStromkirk Captain.

The new and updated version is pretty mean. I've added Liliana, and swapped the 4CMC creature with a Simul, to get more beef for my mana. The instants have been tuned to 4x Smother and 2x Beast Within. Smother should take most in Modern, and Beast Within is nice with Liliana around.

Moved to my Venser, the Sojourner

I have reidealized this deck to mix kessig with a red/green aggro idea.
JacelThunderVoice, 13 years ago
SOme of my Cards eneded up not being standar legal though so I put in the XenoGraft and Titan Forge and Blue Sun's Zenith it worked quite well suprisingly if I get Xenograft call spirits then those become spirits as well and Drogskol Captain helsp them and with Molten Steal Manticore I can exile a creature and deal 4 damage if I am not returning cards with Sun Titan's Ability

I was debating whether or not to add Curse of Misfortunes to the deck, I figured I'd try it with 3 curse of misfortunes (I took 2 lightning bolts and 1 Diabolic Tutors out), and 1 copy of Curse of Stalked Prey and Curse of Death's Hold for curse of Misfortunes to search for. I figured Diabolic tutor is 4 cost to search for one card, so Curse of Misfortunes being 5 cost to search for as many as 4 cards AND play them for free was well worth it. The more I think about it, the more I realize I'd rather get a Curse of Misfortunes than a Diabolic Tutor. The only problem is that if I get 2 Curse of Misfortunes the second isn't very useful but if I get 2 Diabolic Tutors both are useful, and Diabolic Tutors let you get duplicates of cards you already have (as well as searching for Manabarbs or Mana Acceleration if you're Mana Starved). 1. It searches more than once 2. It grows the number of curses for Curse of Thirst 3. It lets you play curses for free I've found mana isn't a huge issue I usually have 2 mana by turn 2 (or whenever I draw my first card)...which should be the statistical average...and once I have 2 mana, I have lots of mana acceleration. I play-tested this before taking the lightning bolts out for the Curse of Misfortunes and found that I killed on average around turn 7-8. I was hoping that the Curse of Misfortunes will accelerate getting the curses out and kill even faster, not to mention buff the Vampire Nighthawks for more damage and more healing. This deck doesn't work well at all if Curse of Bloodletting doesn't come out so the searching is pretty critical. I tested it with the new build, including the Curse of Misfortunes, and by turn 14 (which admittedly was late in the game) I was dealing 116 damage per turn (so My opponent would have realistically died well before turn 14). I did this with the following: 2 Curse of pierced heart 3 Curse of Thirst 1 Curse of Misfortunes 1 Curse of Death's Hold 1 Curse of Stalked Prey 2 Curse of Bloodletting 1 Manabarbs (dealing 4 damage for each mana they tap) 2 Vampire Nighthawks (so I would be dealing creature damage as well and healing) 2 Reassembling Skeletons I think this build has potential to build faster than without the Curse of Misfortunes.
A Phantastic Idea!
TikiShades, 13 years ago
After testing, I found Shrine of Loyal Legions to be a much better card than I thought it would be. When I feel that I've misplayed it and should have summoned defenses, an early Shrine ends up winning the game for me in a swarm of tokens.
This has brought me to the conclusion that Negate would be perfect for this deck. Creatures are rarely a concern for me, but a Revoke Existence, Ratchet Bomb, Demystify, Day of Judgment, or other form of removal could really damage my field. Mana Leak is usually the go-to, but most of my threats are cheap enough that they might be able to pay the 3 extra mana to ruin me. Everyone expects the Mana Leak. Negate doesn't hold the same notoriety.
While muttering about how to better defend after a field-wipe, a less-common archetype gave me a brilliant idea. Or rather, a phantastic idea. Phantasmal Image can both copy my Drogskol Captain and become an extra Lord while giving itself hexproof (much like they do with Lord of the Unreal), OR copy a big baddie on my opponent's side of the field. It's perfect!
But how to fit both Negate and Phantasmal Image into the deck?
