No prob! Legendaries Matter is a fun flavor of Mardu with plenty of options to choose from. If you want some more Haste, Fervor is another helpful option, along with the classics like Swiftfoot Boots and Lightning Greaves.

Lastly, I think you could probably swap Josu Vess, Lich Knight, as it's pretty mana intensive to get its benefit with Kicker. Ratadrabik of Urborg could be a fun on-theme swap, or maybe even Tori D'Avenant, Fury Rider if you want a bit more Aggro.

I don't know if you're budget conscious but below are some recommendations.

Noxious Ghoul to replace Magus of the Coffers Same CMC but turns into a one sided board wipe at instant speed with a sac outlet. Also I'd add Cabal Coffers to maintain the same effect as Magus of the Coffers while not being a creature.

Zombie Master to replace Maralen of the Mornsong. Master has more synergy and tribal type then Maralen. particularly if you add Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth in place of a basic land.

Shepherd of Rot to replace Tattered Mummy. The effect is repeatable and on demand but it does hit yourself. You can use it as leverage to keep someone from board wiping or to force to do something "or else" haha Also if you're playing aggro this just applies even more pressure.

Ashnod's Altar may be a better choice over Phyrexian Altar. You're mono so you don't need the color fixing but doubling colorless mana may be more beneficial. Or you could run both for the best of both worlds.

Skullclamp is a must an any token deck. Especially good with Gravecrawler.

I don't have direct replacements but Jet Medallion and Coat of Arms.

Dictate of Erebos in addition or rather then Grave Pact for the flash protentional.

Then lastly two creatures you could consider but I have no replacement in mind are Josu Vess, Lich Knight and Diregraf Colossus.

Hope you find some of these suggestions helpful :) and yes I get the tokens pun :P

What about Danitha Capashen, Paragon or Josu Vess, Lich Knight. Even if Josu is a very janky card, Danitha can be a powerhouse. If you have some Swords of X and Y (Light/Shadow, Fire/Ice, Hearth/Home or Feast/Famine) could be very usefull, too.

Careful about some of the above suggestions, as not everything people have posted is modern legal. Also, a bunch might look good at a glance, but are actually traps (for example, Cabal Stronghold might look appealing, but to get 10 black mana, you need 7 swamps and the Stronghold in play, which is just not viable).

In modern these are the only cards that come to mind for me:

  • Tron lands. But this would require, at a minimum, having the three Tronlands in play, as well as 3 swamps. That means having to revolve most of your deck around assembling the right lands. And Tron decks can typically have the game won a lot easier than this, so this feels like a whole lot of effort for almost no gain.

  • Skirge Familiar. But this just answers one question with another question. And, at the point where you have a card-drawing engine for this card, to get mana for your Josu Vess, Lich Knight, you've made far too complicated a combo, for again, minimal payoff.

  • Crypt Ghast. This would mean you can do what you want with only 5 swamps, potentially casting your zombie-horde on turn 5 with a high-land-density deck. I personally think this is the most viable option you have to get Josu out, but keep in mind there's still an issue here, namely, it's $12, so above your budget. And beyond that, it's a 4cmc creature that's super-easy to kill before you can do anything with it.

I think your best bet is to either go down the Crypt Ghast route, or add Green to the deck so you can run mana dorks. Anything else will probably be too slow (i'm considering any plan that takes more than 5 turns to execute non-viable)

Heya guys, I wish to make a mono-black knight deck revolving around Josu Vess, Lich Knight and Haakon, Stromgald Scourge. I think I can get Haakon into my graveyard easily enough with some self-milling, but how could I pull off Josu's kicker ability? 10 mana seams like a lot to be able to play consistently. Are there any relatively budget (<$5) cards that will allow me to build a sizeable black mana pool to be able to pull this maneuver off? Thanks :)

Have you considered Josu Vess, Lich Knight ? He brings a little zombie army in a can and is a zombie himself.

You need more ramp since you have a lot of expensive cards. For ramp you need: Arcane Signet , Charcoal Diamond , Jet Medallion , Nyx Lotus , Dark Ritual , Culling the Weak , Wayfarer's Bauble , Bubbling Muck . Take out Ugin, the Ineffable . I don't know why you have it, there are hardly enough colorless cards to make it effective. Also take out Josu Vess, Lich Knight , Abhorrent Overlord , and a couple more expensive cards that cost 6+ cmc. You also need to change your boardwipes. They are far too expensive to be effective. Trade Necromantic Selection for Shadows' Verdict , Deadly Tempest for Mutilate , Oblivion Stone for Soul Shatter . I would suggest Decree of Pain for Damnation or Toxic Deluge considering the deck price. Other cards to consider adding: Swiftfoot Boots , Defile , Phyrexian Arena , Sign in Blood , Read the Bones , Night's Whisper . Since you are already running good sac outlets, Exsanguinate and Torment of Hailfire consider adding an Infinite Mana Combo. Make these changes and the deck will be much faster and more competitive.

Blackgate on Black Lantern (Tergrid menace/midrange)

Hello droslag, thanks for the feedback! They are both great menace cards thank you! I think both those cards would be great in a zombie menace deck to make the most use of their special abilities. Combine them with Graf Harvest and that would be a good foundation! That being said adding Plague Belcher and Relentless Dead is something I will play test!

I am also considering swapping out Hunted Nightmare for 3 copies of Dreamstealer and swapping out Josu Vess, Lich Knight for Tergrid, God of Fright  Flip to include a discard strategy to the main deck.
