There and Back Again: a Kithkin's Tale

Commander / EDH GW (Selesnya)

Vipy5

In a hole in the ground there lived a kithkin. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a kithkin-hole, and that means comfort. This kithkin was a very wise kithkin, and his name was Gaddock Teeg . Gaddock Teeg was cenn of the largest clachan: the Kinsbaile. He was an eloquent speaker and politician, believing that almost any disagreement could be resolved by proper talking, offers, denials, and compromises. His right hand was Kinsbaile's heroine, archer Brigid, Hero of Kinsbaile .

“What does a mountain fear of a fly? Giants are barely aware of us, let alone afraid.” —Gaddock Teeg

This deck uses only cards from the Lorwyn-Shadowmoor blocks to describe the Kinsbaile during their occupation by Nath of the Gilt-Leaf . A few diversions from the story have been made for the sake of a functioning deck - what is the deck? I suppose decks need some description nowadays, since they have strategy and synergy. The plan is to quickly play creatures, use them to attack your opponents, and rely on Gaddock Teeg's ability to limit your opponents' abilities to clear the board. Luckily, most board clears costs 4 mana or more: Wrath of God . When you have a board full of kithkin and elves it's time to summon a finisher like Mirror Entity and swiftly end the game. The ability to quickly build a synergistic board presence enables you to rush more powerful decks before they can get their combos off. In saying that, you are relying on not being controlled out of the game by a lot of efficient removal, since you have access to limited draw or top-end, and most of your cards are most effective when you are ahead. Your best bet will thus be to focus on one player, bringing their life down as low as possible while you can. Assess who will have the least ability to impact you in the early game, so look for the table's combo deck: that's your target, and you must go for the throat. Do your best not to let go until they are dead. You should keep hands with a plan for the first 3-4 turns. Luckily your commander only costs , so turn two is usually set up for you. A one drop is fantastic, as are our power cards: Militia's Pride , Wizened Cenn , Imperious Perfect , Kithkin Mourncaller , and Order of Whiteclay . One or two ramp spells will go far, too.

“Most faeries are harmless pranksters. Every now and again, though, you get one that crosses over from mischievous to malicious.” —Gaddock Teeg

Now you know enough to go on with it. As I was saying, the diversions from the story include the presence of the famous Brigid Baeli, who should be out hunting Ashling the Pilgrim , as well as elves from taercenn other than the Gilt-Leaf, and kithkin from clachan other than the Kinsbaile. I found these necessary to provide a coherent and functional deck without dipping into other blocks or sets.

“If you live on a giant’s back, there’s only one individual you’ll ever need to fear.” —Gaddock Teeg

You may think to include some cards, such as Rhys the Redeemed , who would make an effective (if less flavorful) alternative commander, or solid inclusion otherwise. For a deck of this caliber, I saw the hefty $30 as a bit excessive. Other notable exclusions include Dolmen Gate , Fracturing Gust , Thousand-Year Elixir , and Wheel of Sun and Moon .
