Protect the Crops!

Commander / EDH*

limitsoflogic

You know what scarecrows like? Crops.

You know who else likes crops? That's right, knights.

Which brings me velocitously to the classic odd couple of the deck, Haakon, Stromgald Scourge and Reaper King, aka "Haakey and the King". In honesty, the deck is built for Haakon. But since you can't actually play him from the command zone, a compromise becomes necessary. And what better than to team him up with his most naturalist ally, the scarecrows!? All you need is a few semi-arbitrary agriculture-oriented cards and you're set to go!

Most of the time, as you might imagine, the scarecrows and knights work pretty much independently of one another, with knights doing the bashing and scarecrows doing the scaring (i.e. destroying), but they intersect at several key points.

Xenograft is a Reaper staple and self-evidently makes your knights super-dangerous. But the real fun happens when Haakon, Stromgald Scourge combines with Ashes of the Fallen. Your scarecrows become knights in the graveyard, and since knights can be played from the graveyard, that spells trouble. Scarecrone becomes an inexaustable supply of cards and destruction, Heap Doll is a straight menace, exiling non-indestructible permanents for one mana-a-time.

The really dirty joker in the pack has got to be Aluren. With about twenty creatures at 3CMC or less, it is always super-useful, but with Haakon about it is plain wrong. Throw Court Hussar into the mix to draw the best third of your deck. And don't let me combine Haakey and Aluren with Ashnod's Altar, because I will take my infinite manna along with unkillable infinitely recurring knights and say thank you very much.

The agriculture theme of the deck adds a little flavour, and incidentally does no harm to its effectiveness. Crop Rotation and Reap and Sow both give you the chance to search for nonbasic land which can be hella useful in a range of emergencies. The most predictable is drawing Haakon to the hand, at which point Rix Maadi, Dungeon Palace becomes a real useful card. With Xenograft around, Kher Keep can come in very handy, while Phyrexia's Core provides a bit of redundancy against attempts to exile key artifacts. Soul of the Harvest is a great engine with all the cheapo creatures in the deck. Last but not least, Reap and Compost are cheap as corn and absolute dynamite against opponents who play black; if there is no black out there toss 'em with Rix Maadi and force your opponents to drop the odd card!

Overall the deck is pretty mercurial. Sometimes it just scrapes along, sometimes it wears 'em down with conventional attacks (key man, ya boy Marton Stromgald), and sometimes it just flips and ends the game in a hurry (under one-in-a-million super-optimal conditions it can actually be done in turn 3!). Could similar effects be achieved without anywhere near as much hassle? Probably. Could the deck be more powerful? Clearly. But you are forgetting one thing my friend, and that thing is the crops. Well, I'm not forgetting them, and neither are Haakey and the King. Don't come crying to us when you run out of wheat or whatever.
