Wingrattle Scarecrow

Artifact Creature — Scarecrow

Wingrattle Scarecrow has flying as long as you control a blue creature.

Wingrattle Scarecrow has persist as long as you control a black creature. (When this creature is put into a graveyard from play, if it had no -1/-1 counters on it, return it to play under its owner's control with a -1/-1 counter on it.)

Here's another one that looks like it would work well for the consistent persist ability Grumgully, the Generous

So far I would have:

Mikaeus, the Unhallowed Rhythm of the Wild Master Chef Uncivil Unrest Grumgully, the Generous

That's some pretty decent odds of getting recurring Persist creatures! Oh yes, I also added two scarecrows to the list, Rattleblaze Scarecrow as well as Wingrattle Scarecrow. a bit on the mana heavy side, but they should help.

I've also updated the list to show some changes, such as the removal of the tutors and some other tweaks.

Hey, good upgrades to the precon on a semi budget.

Ashnod's Altar + Nim Deathmantle are excellent upgrades. If you add Myr Battlesphere it's an infinite combo to create infinite Myrs and infinite Necrons with Imotekh.

Staff of Domination in your graveyard is a card that breaks Trazyn the Infinite because it allows to repeatedly untap Trazyn for only 1 mana each time. Use this with any mana rock in your graveyard that can tap for more than one mana: Sol Ring, Basalt Monolith, Thran Dynamo, Worn Powerstone to make infinite mana. With infinite mana then use Staff to draw as much of your library as you want. Sceptre of Eternal Glory if you control three basic Swamps allows for infinite black mana + draw from Staff to draw and cast as many cards as you want.

Scarecrone is another excellent upgrade, you can take advantage of it with Imotekh + Wingrattle Scarecrow for repeatable draw + Necrons because Wingrattle is an artifact and a Scarecrow. It has persist, when it dies it returns to the battlefield after first entering the graveyard. A returned persist creature gets a -1/-1 counter, but you can remove the counter with a +1/+1 counter allowing the creature to persist again.

Thran Vigil enablers repeatable persist and it has other uses too because outside of the combo other artifacts are leaving your graveyard to trigger Imotekh. Steel Overseer can remove -1/-1 counter while also putting a +1/+1 on all other artifact creatures you control which can be a helpful repeatable effect with 2/2 Necrons.

Some changes to consider:

Technomancer is subpar for 7 mana, can only return artifact creatures and they all return at the same time only triggering Imotekh once. Plasmancer only gets a basic Swamp and it's only put into your hand not onto the battlefield, thats not very good for 4 mana.

Necron Overlord, for 4 mana and have to tap artifacts you would think it would hit all opponents, but it doesn't only one opponent makes this effect not worth it. Haunting Voyage, there's a lot of nonNecron creatures here making this inconsistent in what it can reanimate for 6 or 7 mana.

Thought Vessel gives you no max hand size, but that effect doesn't help you, you want to be able to discard hand down to 7 cards, that helps to get artifacts into your graveyard for Imotekh. Temple of the False God is a terrible land especially when you have none or very few land ramp effects, you don't need it. A land that can't tap for mana in the early game or even mid game is unplayable.

Good luck with your deck.

I really like your deck. I'm looking to make a similar build.

About the infinite life combo, as persist creatures I don't believe that Putrid Goblin or Wingrattle Scarecrow trigger Ivy Lane Denizen because they aren't green? I do like how Dimir House Guard and Brainspoil have the added value of being able to search up pieces of your combo.

Update: The infinite combo is now Reaper King + Panharmonicon OR Aura Shards + Metallic Mimic + Wingrattle Scarecrow OR Rattleblaze Scarecrow. Basically, I destroy everyone's things by repeatedly cycling an infinitely persisting scarecrow in and out of the graveyard using the extra destroy trigger.

@n0bunga: Thanks for the input but I think I will pass on that one. Most times I don't end up casting Reaper King because I plan to win without him. The only reason he is the commander over say, Child of Alara or another 5 color Commander is because of Persist Scarecrows like Wingrattle Scarecrow and Rattleblaze Scarecrow allowing me to go infinite with his ability if I have to. I would much rather run the two cards suggested by DaftVader above because they make the rest of my persist creatures work with Reaper King. The only time he is cast is when I can combo with him.

Ok, so lets talk about main game plan before we start nitpicking particular cards.

I've never tried to build Mikaeus myself, but from what I know about combo decks there are three categories of pieces that make the deck work: 1) Creatures that can re-undie with Mike's ability; 2) Sac outlets to feed them to; and 3) Death triggers that can create a win condition.

From the looks of this deck, what you tried to do was to load up on as many of each these as you could to get the best chance of drawing into the ones you need. Here's what you have of each category:

  1. Walking Ballista, Triskelion, Crystalline Crawler, Chainbreaker, Spincrusher, Banewhip Punisher, Wingrattle Scarecrow, Tatterkite, Plague Belcher, Skinrender, Lingering Tormentor, Pith Driller, Soulstinger, Cinderhaze Wretch, and Carnifex Demon. 15 Total

  2. Altar of Dementia, Blasting Station, Phyrexian Altar, Ashnod's Altar, Viscera Seer, Yahenni, Undying Partisan, Bloodthrone Vampire, Carrion Feeder, Spawning Pit, and Tainted AEther. 10 Total

  3. Zulaport Cutthroat, Blood Artist, Altar of the Brood, Grim Haruspex. 4 Total

So, all in all, 29 of your deckslots are focused on nothing except your main win condition. That's a lot of bloat for a deck that needs to ramp at least to 6, and should be packing disruption aimed at its opponents on top of that. Considering you're in the color with the best unconditional tutoring, I think you can get away with cutting a lot of those redundant combo pieces, and right now the first category is what you have the most of. I'd say anything that doesn't reduce the need for additional pieces or generate infinite mana is worth cutting.

I'd cut all of the following:

For more tutors, draw, and ramp. (That would also lower your curve to where Ad Nauseam is viable.) Leave Banewhip Punisher, Chainbreaker, and Spincrusher since they're the cheapest, and Banewhip Punisher is semi-decent removal.

I also recommend Skullclamp in terms of draw, as it goes very well with the reccruing creatures and sac outlets. You could also consider a bit of a reanimator strategy to get your combo pieces, since black can tutor to the graveyard.

First I suggest taking out all the artifact banners and replacing them with some other mana rocks like Fellwar Stone, Chromatic Lantern, Manalith, Hedron Archive, Thran Dynamo, or Expedition Map.

Some tribal cards include Wingrattle Scarecrow, Grim Poppet, Thornwatch Scarecrow, One-Eyed Scarecrow, Fang Skulkin, Shell Skulkin, Pili-Pala for the Scarecrow part.

Some good cards for your Scarecrows/because of your Scarecrows are Kindred Boon, Padeem, Consul of Innovation, Bringer of the White Dawn, Sun Titan, Master Transmuter, All Is Dust, Darksteel Forge, Conjurer's Closet, Scourglass, Mechanized Production, Call to the Kindred, Descendants' Path, and Saheeli Rai.
