Saw this guy while looking at LOTR spoilers and thought he'd make a nifty build-around.

The main theme revolves around pumping my deck full of valuable Spirit creatures and targeting instants so that The Oathbreaker can protect them while he's in play. This is very much a deck that's more than the sum of its parts, as I'm using a lot of weird cards that normally wouldn't quite make it in the 99 of any other deck.

One important thing to note is that traditional can-trip instants like Defiant Strike lose their card draw bonus if the Oathbreaker or another Spirit phases out, so the only viable "can-trips" I was able to find that worked around that clause were Study Break, Repel the Darkness, and Expose Evil. These spells in particular still work because the can-trip bonus still happens so long as I target an opponent's creature in addition to one of my spirits. They also at least provide tempo advantage when my commander isn't in play to do his thing, whereas Touch of Darkness and Heaven's Gate are practically dead draws during a worse case scenario.

While trying to go full spirit tribal without Blue handicaps you quite a bit, pivoting into Black actually opens up quite a few potent side-grade paths, particularly when you combo your Spirit King with Horobi, Death's Wail. The Oathbreaker's phase-out ability essentially quell's Horobi's aimless destruction somewhat, making her more one-sided as you can phase out your spirits before Horobi kills them as well as herself.

Other neat board pieces include:

Mavinda, Students' Advocate, who can recycle all your targeting instants from the graveyard. She makes cards like Curtains' Call particularly potent so long as I'm able to target one of my spirits.

Infernal Kirin, Banshee of the Dread Choir, He Who Hungers, and Kyoki, Sanity's Eclipse, who are all in-tribe hand disruption

Killian, Ink Duelist, who cheapens the costs of all your targeted removal/protection

and Isochron Scepter and Spellbinder, which let you repeatedly cast whichever targeting instants you decide to imprint.

Keep in mind that you risk leaving yourself open to massive swings whenever you phase out your spirits with The Oathbreaker's effect, meaning that pillowfort options such as Revenge of Ravens, Windborn Muse, Norn's Annex, and Ghostly Prison are handy for keeping yourself healthy whenever your Spirits fizzle out of existence.

The power level of this particular build is probably at a strong 5 or weak 6, but upgrading your deck with stuff like Teferi's Protection, Anointed Procession, and any tutors can easily push it to like a strong 7 or 8.
