Goal: Dromoka for <$20.
How to play the deck and how it's built: If you like tribal decks and you like +1/+1 counters and your significant other hates how much you spend on inked cardboard, this deck is for you. We have here a deck that was a bit of fun to create. Since I started playing MtG, I've loved two things in particular: tribal and +1/+1 counters. Once I saw Doubling Season, I lost my mind. Since I started playing, I have grown into more of a WU player (my main deck is Geist of Saint Traft which I have made into Ange tribal), but I will always have a fondness in my heart for tribal with ramp and +1/+1 counters.
Most tribal Dragon decks run red, since all the best Dragons require red. Utvara Hellkite, Balefire Dragon, Bladewing the Risen, Scourge of Valkas, the list goes on. Heck, the format was started by using the pre-Tarkir Elder Dragons as your General, and the best two (in my opinion) require red ( Vaevictis Asmadi and Nicol Bolas). So here we are with a Dragon tribal deck without red. Not only are we without red, but we are on a budget. So, our pool for Dragons runs low. Some of the options are downright terrible and others are out of range for our $20 budget. In order to give the deck enough Dragons to be truly a tribal deck, I estimated 18 to be a good number of Dragons. So that we could get to 18, I had to put in some "Dragons." There are a few Shapeshifters with the Changeling ability, making them Dragons for everything a tribal deck needs them to be. We also have one of our ramp cards that turns into a Dragon, should we need another -- Dromoka Monument .
We also have a ton of cards that give your creatures +1/+1 counters, and even more cards that care about those counters. Thanks to the Tarkir block, we're able to get a pretty good Dragon tribal deck without using that red. If I were to expand the budget a little bit on this deck, I would add these cards: Hardened Scales, Doubling Season, Dragonlord Dromoka, Steel Hellkite, and possibly Primal Vigor.
If you're playing this deck and wondering how it works, it's pretty simple. Your first task is to protect yourself while ramping into your Dragons. After you have some Dragons out, you'll need to protect them while dealing some serious damage to your opponents. Boost your creature power with +1/+1 counters and beat them in the face. With cards like Citadel Siege and Retreat to Kazandu, you will be laying the smackdown in no time.
