Elturel Survivors

Creature — Tiefling Peasant

Trample, myriad (Whenever this creature attacks, for each opponent other than defending player, you may create a token that's a copy of this creature that's tapped and attacking that player or a planeswalker they control. Exile the tokens at the end of combat.)

As long as Elturel Survivors is attacking, it gets +X/+0, where X is the number of lands defending player controls.

My build is not as focused on tokens, but I think Lagomos, Hand of Hatred is an upgrade over a couple of your other producers, his tokens are more reliable to hit than some of the 1/1 tokens. Elturel Survivors similarly is probably better than your other myriad creatures. Genasi Enforcers also is a solid turn 2 play before Goro, you're much more likely to hit with those tokens on turn 3 than with the Banshee's on turn 6. I like your Reconnaissance mission, and in my experience having multiple of those effects is worth the slots especially for your token build where you have an engine often before goro-goro is cast. You won't regret any number of Gix, Yawgmoth Praetor, Grazilaxx, Illithid Scholar, Coastal Piracy, Bident of Thassa, or the new card The Indomitable. I think Decadent Dragon isn't a great fit, I noticed it on the recent edhrec suggestions for not much reason ;)

Hi there, welcome to Tappedout and Isshin brewing. I saw your deck and thought I'd offer some suggestions. By the looks of your deck, you have an emphasis on utilizing equipment, but your creatures don't really support that too well.

I think it could be helpful to first determine if you want to have more of an emphasis on the equipment aspect, or go more creature heavy and open up more attack trigger shenangians that Isshin is capable of. A few general suggestions off the top:

  • If you do decide to go more of the equipment route, I think it could be helpful to add stuff like Puresteel Paladin, Ardenn, Intrepid Archaeologist, or Sigarda's Aid, depending on your budget. Equipments can be mana intensive to cast, then equip. These types of effects can help you get around those Equip costs.

  • I think you could drop (most) of the equipments, and instead go more creature heavy. Myriad creatures like Hammers of Moradin and Elturel Survivors are great in Isshin, since Myriad gets an additional trigger from him. Myriad creatures are all fairly budget friendly, with the exception of Battle Angels of Tyr

  • The other great thing about Myriad and other effects that create creature tokens that enter tapped and attacking, is that you can combine them with enter the battlefield group slug damage like Impact Tremors and Witty Roastmaster. Additionally, Devilish Valet can be a serious beater that can outright kill opponents depending on how many creature tokens you pump out on your attack swings.

I hope these suggestions are a helpful starting point. I'd be happy to offer some additional feedback if you would like it. Isshin is one of my favorite commanders of the past year, so you're in for a fun time.

Ogre Battledriver is kind of nice I may add him.

I did know that about Elturel Survivors, thanks for letting me know how that works tho.

I'll stick to deathtouch rather than menace, as I said Pyreheart Wolf Was really just filler lol.

Skyhunter Strike Force is nice I'll keep that in mind.

Yeah I pretty much made the decision to cut Lightning Runner as we were speaking as I thought the same, also thanks for checking the price.

Corpse Knight and Witty Roastmaster are good adds, I didn't even think of taking advantage of the tokens with things like them and similar effects lol.

Hellrider and didn't even see that effect of Commissar Severina Raine but they are both good for the same reason.

I'll take the lands into account, Captain Lannery Storm is quite nice with isshin.

I'll keep Tibalt's Trickery in mind but for now I'll keep chaos warp for overall budget reasons lol.

I missed Soul Partition in the brothers war set, it's quite nice.

Generous Gift and Stroke of Midnight are definitely nice cards, kind of forgot about Generous Gift lol.

As for now I like Mortify a bit better as there's currently no really threatening Artifacts, but Wear / Tear will be noted tho.

I love Plumb the Forbidden lol.

Fates' Reversal is really just for the times isshin gets killed a lot and he becomes too expensive to cast again, the idea I have is just let him go to the graveyard and bring him back if it gets stopped it's no big deal as that would be my last effort before complete death, that's really all Fates' Reversal is for lol.

I did see Flowering of the White Tree But don't have it for money reasons.

Brew discussions are one of my favorite aspects of MtG and EDH. I'll hop on Discord a couple times a month and talk with my best friend about our deck ideas. We end up chatting for a couple hours at a time as we deliberate on decisions lol.

I used to run Fervor until Rising of the Day dropped earlier this year.

  • Ogre Battledriver is also a great Haste and Power boost for your creatures that ETB.

  • A note with Elturel Survivors is that its +X buff is static, so that won't get doubled by Isshin. This is what allows the Myriad tokens to "see" the lands that your opponents control. So each Myriad copy will check for the number of lands its respective defending opponent controls.

  • If you do want a Menace anthem, Goblin War Drums is also an option for the same CMC as Pyreheart Wolf, but is a bit more removal resistant. Hard to pass up on those death touch anthems though.

  • If you like Adriana, Captain of the Guard, I'd recommend checking out Skyhunter Strike Force as a slighter CMC cheaper option, or as a redundant effect.

  • The tough thing with Lightning Runner is that it still has to attack over two turns to get the full 8 energy with Isshin on the board. Without him that gets stretched out to over 4 turns. I took a quick look at Cardkingdom, and the cheapest non-foil Aurelia is about $6.99.

  • The ETB group slug damage can get nasty once Isshin starts doubling up the token production on attacks, especially with Myrel. Some other budget effects are Corpse Knight and Witty Roastmaster. Purphoros, God of the Forge is still fairly out of budget, but a nice upgrade if you wanted to move that direction.

  • Hellrider, Commissar Severina Raine, and Brutal Hordechief are a nice suite of group slug damage that encourage you to swing with big boards. Commissar is also like a budget Skullclamp on a stick. Speaking of which, Skullclamp is a great draw piece for all your small token creatures, and should be under $10, depending on the printing.

  • I'm currently running 35 lands in my Isshin deck, along with the 3 Talismans, Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Sword of the Animist, and some Treasure production in the form of Captain Lannery Storm, Professional Face-Breaker, and a handful of other Treasure producers.

As for the instants and sorceries, I tend not to suggest cuts as much there, since I think that's where more meta & playgroup specific tech decisions can be made. Generally speaking, I recommend cutting out single target sorcery speed removal, and saving those sorcery slots for board wipes & draw, Also try to make your instant speed removal be as target-versatile as possible to cut down on how many permanent-specific options you need to include. Here are a few thoughts I do have:

  • I'd suggest swapping Chaos Warp with Tibalt's Trickery. It's fun to catch people off guard with a red counter spell, and White & Black have a better go at removing the permanent types that Red typically can't. I think Chaos Warp is better if you're running a Red color combo that doesn't have access to Enchantment removal.

  • Terminate or Condemn can be cut or swapped with Soul Partition. Soul Partition is great since it can (temporarily) remove a troublesome nonland permanent, or save one of your own if needed. Sometimes the extra can throw off an oppoent's tempo if they really need to recast whatever you exiled, & sets them back a turn or two.

  • I think Vindicate can be replaced with Generous Gift and/or Stroke of Midnight. I think that making your suite of removal be as versatile as possible across a few cards can help you save multiple slots that are more specific/situational on what they can remove. The creature tokens created by Generous Gift & Stroke of Midnight are fairly low impact, & typically die in chump blocks or board wipes.

  • Mortify can probably replaced with Wear / Tear as an instant speed option that hits multiple targets.

  • If you want some instant speed draw, I'd recommend checking out Plumb the Forbidden. It's an excellent response to your opponents board wiping, and since you can create copies of it, the copies will dodge counter spells.

  • Fates' Reversal can probably be cut. Isshin doesn't really want single target recursion, and the Venture the Dungeon is better if you have other instances of Venturing to get its benefits. Lich-Knights' Conquest is a new option for mass recursion that you can throw some creature or treasure tokens into.

  • A little off track from the instants and sorceries, but I'd recommend swapping out Paladin Class and replacing it with Flowering of the White Tree. The Ward 1 can make your opponents look for easier targets to remove, & helps some of your more aggro Legends stick around.

Thanks for all this, one of the best parts of brewing is talking about the brew and you're helping me a lot with this.

Yes i like Rising of the Day better than Emblem of the Warmind I just found Emblem really, I didn't know a similar effect existed.

Myriad is quite nice with isshin I haven't looked at all the options with it tho, I do like Elturel Survivors quite a bit better.

Ankle Shanker was one of my first pics for this deck actually, deathtouch and first strike is one of the most lethal combinations of keywords I can think of lol, Pyreheart Wolf was just a put it in to fill the slot so to speak, I like Kaya, Geist Hunter will slot in perfectly for a few reasons, Vault of the Archangel is a rather useful utility land definitely in consideration.

Lightning Runner will definitely have a bullseye on his back as soon as he hits the board, so if the deck doesn't get to pricy with it Aurelia, the Warleader I'll definitely add her.

Dolmen Gate and Clever Concealment are definitely something needed and will be on the list of things to add.

I love Firemane Commando she's definitely going in the list, she draws and potentially keeps heat off of me while she lasts, Chivalric Alliance and Minas Tirith are good cards I may add them later, as of now I like my instant/sorcery draw cards as they don't require anything to draw and they're a good bit cheaper (money wise) than the ones you recommend, but they are nice.

I was thinking Signets would be better than more land as you can only play a land a turn but Artifacts can be played more than once adding to isshin getting the ball rolling faster, how many lands would you have?

Didn't even think of effects like Impact Tremors with the tokens, I wasn't quite sure how they'd work with Adeline, Resplendent Cathar and Myrel, Shield of Argive but absolutely adding those type of effects now lol.

Which instants/Sorceries would you cut? Because I was going to do the same but I can't decide on a proper ratio of target removal, draw etc.

And yes all this info is a great help to me, keep it coming if you want I'm loving this, amd thanks again.

No prob, I'm happy to help. Isshin is my favorite commander of the past year, and one I've had a lot of fun playing. Happy to chat about Isshin theory.

I think he has some awesome options that should fit well within your budget. In looking at your list a bit more, and considering what you have in mind, here are some more thoughts I have:

  • You are correct about Shakedown Heavy. I'd say give it a try and see how you like its play pattern irl.

  • I'd recommend swapping Emblem of the Warmind with Rising of the Day. Emblem is cheaper, but is more vulnerable to incidental removal as an Aura. Rising of the Day also has a helpful little buff for your Legends.

  • I think Myriad in general is great with Isshin, and would recommend checking out Elturel Survivors as a potential swap with Coastline Marauders.

  • Ankle Shanker could be a potential swap with Pyreheart Wolf in terms of its keyword anthems. Similarly, Vault of the Archangel and Kaya, Geist Hunter are additional death touch anthems. Kaya can also be a budget token doubler.

  • You can potentially replace Lightning Runner with Aurelia, the Warleader. I think she should be under $10 now due to some of her recent reprintings. On the note of getting multiple attack steps, I think 2-3 effects are plenty, since they act more as finishers.

  • Although they're a bit over your budget, I'd recommend Dolmen Gate and Clever Concealment as board protection options. Isshin thrives on maintaining a strong board presence, so anything that can proactively do that, or do so at instant speed can do a lot to keep your momentum going.

  • If you want to expand your draw options, Chivalric Alliance, Firemane Commando, and Minas Tirith are all newer options that could be worth looking at.

  • 33 lands is a liiiitle low, I think you can cut a couple of the Signets for a couple more lands.

  • Since you already have a few effects that make creature tokens, I think that group-slug effects like Impact Tremors, Hellrider, and Commissar Severina Raine to name a few can help you really punch damage around the table. While the power/toughness anthems are helpful more so for helping your board survive attacks, they aren't as helpful if your board doesn't have Menace, Trample, or some other evasive anthem to punch through. The group slug effects help soften up your opponents to help make combat damage more effective, and vice versa. Impact Tremors and similar effects can be pretty nasty with those additional Myriad tokens, and any other attack trigger tokens that Isshin doubles up.

  • I think your last 11 cuts can come more from your Instants and sorceries and sculpting those to what your meta is like.

I hope these additional suggestions are helpful. I'm not one to plug my own decks, but I think some of the following Isshin primers are detailed and well-written:

The recent Aurelia Multiverse Legends reprint is such a huge benefit to budget decks. I know your overall budget is $75, but do you have a budget per card? I have a few suggestions within budget that I think could push your deck a little more without breaking the bank:

  • I think you can probably cut Heiko Yamazaki, the General and Raiyuu, Storm's Edge you currently have 5 Warriors & 3 Samurai in deck. From playing Isshin extensively this past year, you definitely want to be attacking with more than one creature per combat haha. Solo attacking usually only happens in early game or after recovering from board wipes.

  • Since you already have Duke Ulder Ravengard and Hammers of Moradin, you could lean a bit more into Myriad. Hammers of Moradin is one of my favorite cards in my list, and usually punches above its weight. Some other Myriad creatures you could include are Genasi Enforcers and Elturel Survivors.

  • To pair with Myriad and your creature token production in general, I'd recommend getting in some ETB damage effects like Corpse Knight, Impact Tremors, and/or Witty Roastmaster. This helps get some damage in "around" defenses, and softens up opponents even further for when your creatures connect.

  • I think Delina, Wild Mage could be an eventual swap/upgrade to Flamerush Rider. Yes, you can Dash out the Rider, but the copies that Delina makes are not Legendary, which can have a higher ceiling on doubling up those triggers you typically wouldn't be able to.

  • Karlach, Fury of Avernus could be a budget-ish (less than $10) swap for Raiyuu if you want another extra combat effect. Karlach doesn't even need to attack, she just checks if you are attacking.

  • Breena, the Demagogue or Karazikar, the Eye Tyrant could be potential swaps with Glint-Sleeve Siphoner. Both are a blast, and add some fun political wrinkles to games while helping you (and opponents) draw cards. They're high risk/high reward. Breena can help grow herself or your other threats, and Karazikar can help deflect aggro away with Goad.

  • Lastly, I'd recommend Gruesome Realization as a swap for Faithless Looting. Yes, Looting is cheap & has Flashback, but it isn't super helpful in this deck since you're not utilizing your graveyard as a resource. Gruesome Realization has helped me cut down other opposing creature token boards in a few games, or drawn me cards if I wasn't playing against those types of strats.

I hope these suggestions are helpful. Overall your deck has decent synergy, but I think a handful of the suggested swaps can get it a bit more honed in. Hope you have fun with Isshin, he's a blast.

Have you had a chance to play-test your deck irl yet? I think you have a mixed variety of attack triggers, but some of them kind work against each other. Is there a particular direction you're interested in with Isshin, or do you have a specific budget in mind?

If you're interested in an Exalted route, I think you can trim out a decent chunk of creatures above your 4 cmc range. An effect that works pretty well with Isshin and also helps shore up one of the limitations of Exalted are the Myriad creatures. Myriad token copies are never declared as attackers, since they enter tapped and attacking, so you can still get your Exalted triggers & attack all opponents instead of just 1 at a time. You already have Duke Ulder Ravengard, & could lean more into it.

All Exalted Creatures in Mardu colors. The ones I think could be great in your deck:

  • Genasi Enforcers - Comes down early & can buff itself

  • Hammers of Moradin - A personal favorite in my Isshin deck. I like being able to tap down 2 creatures per board to make attacks a bit safer & more damaging.

  • Battle Angels of Tyr - The most expensive money-wise, but an excellent upgrade if you would want to go that route. More of a "catch up" effect.

  • Elturel Survivors - Can punch well.

  • Herald of the Host - Budget alternative to Battle Angels of Tyr.

If you decide to lean more into Myriad, you could also run effects like Corpse Knight, Impact Tremors, & Witty Roastmaster to squeeze even more damage out of all your Myriad tokens entering the battlefield.

I hope these suggestions are interesting and helpful. I'd be down to discuss potential cuts if you're interested.
